Why did New Orleans tear down all that cool stuff? Did the city not want to pay for its maintenance?

Because New Orleans is stupid...

That would've been an awesome venue for concerts.... They could've gotten naming rights and has ASM Global to manage it like the Dome, the Arena and the Shrine...

the amphitheater was always meant to be temporary…it was not designed for a long term lifespan. After the fair, there was some discussion about keeping it but it was determined to not be feasible, and anyway the site was already designated to be part of the new convention center (which is the lasting legacy of the worlds fair)

Still have my wallet. Still as empty as it was when I was 7 years old.

It's the exact sign requested, in Livingston.

I think World Fairs hit their zenith in the 20’s and 30’s. They seemed to be quite the spectacle in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s.

Expo ‘86 in Vancouver was awesome! I was a little kid, but went three different times since I had grandparents in Seattle. I think my dad bought a three day pass that he stretched out over its run.

Seattle and Spokane both have cool things left over from their world’s fairs. For Seattle, the Space Needle, the roof for the arena, and Pacific Science Center (former USA pavilion).

I went to that one too. Stayed w/ a relative in Seattle, then we drove up to Vancouver and stayed at some dude's rental house. ....With the guy there.

It was a pretty cool fair, though. I remember all the international villages/exhibits, and a giant Swatch watch. Oddly enough, when I look up pictures of the giant watch, it's nothing like I picture it in my head. My brain just reconstructed this vague childhood memory of the concept of the giant watch.

There's one up on eBay now for $400 if you are willing to pay it. Don't want to post the link and get in trouble with adminstrators, but search "1984 New Orleans World’s Fair Directional Sign"

was there and it sucked. Not worth remembering or commemorating. It fact, it was so bad that the World's Fair has never come back to the United States since.

It was just awful. Knoxville was great in 1982, but NOLA was telegraphing to the world its descent to 3rd world status with its “world of rivers” theme. That stupid gondola over the Mississippi was a shitshow.

If you happen to find a sign use it for target practice and deface that sign.
