Also, despite what people say, both can be used indoors with just a few minor modifications.

So that char broil posted above.. Just the box on the left is the "smoker" right

the whole thing is the smoker, the box offset is the firebox, the part where the meat goes is the pit.

If I suddenly had a lot more time on my hands I would want to get into woodworking. Specifically carving duck decoys from wood/cork.

I keep myself occupied with boating, fishing, hunting, dog training, and play beer league lacrosse.

So the little Weber charcoal pit is not a smoker?

nah man, it's really not that difficult. it does take a while to get good at maintaining consistent temps, but nothing that can't be learned with practice.

I run, garden, read, sew, cycle at Cycle Bar when I can get there ... would love to volunteer at a pet shelter or rescue when I'm not working anymore.

Thanks! I've been pretty lazy on working him lately. Going to take some brushing up before September.

Been checking out "Forged in Fire" and thinking of taking up blacksmith as a hobby.

Coal Forge, tall container of oil for tempering the steel, hammer, anvil, maybe some welding gear and a grinder.

Start making and selling hand crafted knives. One young guy on there said he made over 200 knives in 75 days. Dallas area is probably a good market selling sets to those 35k'millionaires. Just think of all the old lawnmowers and cars and stuff you can turn into works of functional art (guy won Italian Sword show used a junkyard auto spring for his build, $10k check for 5 days labor on free material).

My main two hobbies are golf and pool. Golf is definitely much better to get into as far as meeting good people and networking. It's also much harder to get descent at.

Smokers aren't meant to cook with direct heat. At least not exactly. A side box on a smoker is where your coals go. You try to get air flow from that fire box tot he main bit. You'll notice the vents are set up that way. Heat and smoke travels from fire box to main pit and cooks meat at very low temperatures compared to "grilling". You can still grill on a smoker, just put the coals in the pit section.

Actually waiting for a $70 char broil smoker to come in from Amazon today. Hadn't bought a pit at my new house and figured for 70 bucks, as long as I can cook for 1 summer, it's worth it. Hoping it opens up our meal choices.

To the OP...I fished a lot when in LA. Moved and had a kid, so sold my boat and fishing went away. Started triathlon. Keeps things interesting since theres 3 disciplines. Takes a lot of your down time, so you're never bored. And I'm in much better shape than I've ever been. This year, I have no plans to race until the end of the year, so I'm taking it easy. Still nice to have something to do every day even when it's not super serious training.

I've been into photography the last 5 years. It can be a lot of fun and very rewarding. I also got a drone a few months ago and have been shooting some photography with it. I've been having a lot of fun with that.

I'll second the photography recommendation; and go a bit further with it- using manual, legacy lenses.

Get a cheap mirrorless camera, used. Keh.com is a great place to buy from, they have prices that will beat even a good ebay deal on bodies. I use an Olympus PEN E-PL1, you should be able to get one for under $100 pretty easy. They work well.

Then, do a little research on camera lenses; find a brand that has changed the mounting system. I went in on the Minolta MC/MD mount. Canon's FD mount is another good choice, but there are many.

Buy an adapter for the lens mount off Ebay, and start buying the fixed distance, prime lenses in that mount. Most are pretty cheap (extremely cheap compared to new autofocus lenses), and the image quality is still on par with the new stuff... better than the cheaper new stuff, actually. I'd recommend you finding a 28, 35, 40, 50, 55 and then get a cheap 100-300 lens that would fit; if you shop right, that shouldn't take you much beyond another $100-200.

It's amazing how much better your photos become once you learn what you're doing.
