I wouldn't use the Vet School as my every day vet because we've seen a different doctor every time we go and that matters. But if there is something seriously wrong it's the best place to take your pet.

I use Helouin on Airline North of Florida. Any of the vets there will do. There are several members of multiple generations of the family that work at the vet hospital. They've always done very well with my animals.
I believe they also handle the BRPD's veterinary needs for their K9 units and have for years.
For primary care, and most illnesses I'd agree. You don't need the LSU vet school for checkups, routine care, vaccinations, spaying, typical sicknesses, etc. If your vet refers you to the vet school, though, your animal is likely in a situation where it's going to be expensive no matter where you go. However, if anyone around can fix your animal, they're the ones that can do it.
With that kind of resource in my back yard, it's worth it for me to carry pet insurance so if big dummy needs LSU, big dummy gets LSU.

For checkups/shots/Everyday/yearly stuff, DVM Maria Mitchell. Used to work at the vet school, now runs her own thing out of her home off Brightside.

From someone who knows ~35% of the people at the SVM, I strongly disagree. In addition you will pay through the nose for any services you receive. The only situation I would consider the SVM is if you cannot find an external vet in private practice that knows how to handle a particular severe situation.

If you don't mind driving, Spay Spa in Erwinville. She if half the price of every other vet. Dr. Fairchild used to be the shelter vet, and she's the FOTA vet. The price is worth the drive for me.

Thanks to everyone for the recommendations. We appreciate the suggestions and will make a decision to take our dog to one of the vets suggested.

Which vet were you using? Sounds like what is going on at Jefferson Animal Hospital since Dr Hasse retired.

All the DVMs at Animal Health Clinic on Perkins are great. And Petz Plaza nextdoor has all your dog’s records too so you don’t have to go hunting for them if you need to board, bathe, groom, etc.

I'm pretty sure we went to the same vet and I left also. Not only did I lose 2 dogs in their care, but since they were bought out by a corporation, it's all about money. I am now at Sherwood South. They are good but it is a really large practice and very expensive. But at least I feel the animals are diagnosed properly.

We used Armstrong until he moved his practice across town. We use Garden District now.

Sherwood South Animal Hospital was great.

Tim Armstrong has been awesome. He is very non-invasive.

I don't think this clinic was bought by a corporation. Just not the care we were used to and totally into trying to sell you all kinds of peripheral goods and services every time you visit.

It was bought by a "group" that also owns one in Lake Charles-the only practices they bought in Louisiana, so I assume they have others. It isn't the same local it used to be. Things changed for the worse, I believe.

Dr Grayson is a FANTASTIC veterinarian. In a pinch we had to see Heintz one time before and he was great as well. Not expensive.
