Ole Miss we couldn't take just any course for an elective credit until after registration and you transfer into it. Or at least while I was there.
This is to prevent people who need certain required courses to graduate from being locked out of a full class by people who are taking it as an elective.
This was nearly a decade ago though, so I might be mistaken, but I don't think I am.
FWIW, I took easy electives intentionally and it was awesome. CPR, Health, and a couple others that were instant As.

What are you missing here?
Literally nothing.

What is preventing Universities parsing the elective hours out, logically determining what is required in the core and basing secondary education efforts on the real goal which is preparedness for the next level?
Nothing. Instead, they allow the student to have some say in what classes they think would be of interest to them. If the student chooses to take the easiest course available, that's the student's choice.

Do you at lease agree that student enrollment would not be affected by reducing a 4 year degree into 3?
Why wouldn't I agree to that?

I just don't see why you can't understand that a bachelor's degree is about more than training for a job.

The vast vast majority of college students attend public universities and the average debt load is still significant.
Doesn't change the fact that the government is backing loans to people who have no way to pay them back if they don't land a good job out of college. In a normal free market these people would never qualify for a loan. Personally I think the Universities would keep their costs much more reasonable if they didn't have a cash cow on hand to fund all their shite.
But either way I have a major problem (since ultimately the taxpayer, me, is going to be footing the bill) with loans being doled out to people who don't have the financial backing to qualify for them.

It's about a well-rounded education. Electives in gen ed coursework are meant for the student to pick what areas their education will be well-rounded in.
Some students choose to take sports or rec classes. That's fine. But don't bitch that you took classes completely unrelated to what interests you professionally when you're the one that chose the classes.

This is the much larger issue, and it has nothing to do with the number of electives in a 4 year degree.

So a person cant think for themselves, we need institutions to provide preset guidelines for career entry? Are we given these careers at birth or sometime in grade school?
Soilent green is people man, it's people...

The barrier in that case is to provide first call for people who need it for graduation, you can still take the elective once that step has gone through

Check back with that CPA is about 5 years. And really check back with them when they are senior staff or above.

Right.
Unless the class is full is what I meant.

IMO student loans should only be granted for certain degrees. I.E. math, sciences, education (to be a teacher), medical, etc. Social sciences, general studies, poetry and the likes should not be eligible for loans.

No it doesn't. It can in some instances as I've already conceded. Those situations are specialized and very few.

What part of few do you disagree with?

Asking someone to intuitively know what classes will help them in their future job isn't going to go well. It's as simple as that. That's why colleges put together curricula and employ academic counselors.

LNCH, I hear you. I do. But the premise is simply changing an archaic paradigm set in place eons ago that isn't sustainable in today's climate, specifically, financially. Having a minimum credit hour standard is no longer logical no matter what "electives" can get you there. Replace Badminton with History Of The 8-Track Tape for all I care... it's simply not needed.
Is there a College Elective Teacher union I know nothing about?

Half the electives are BS. I hear you on the "well Rounded" argument, but when 90% of students skip class and just show up for the test in these electives, its pointless. Its just as easy to become a well rounded person by reading a selection of articles on this here interweb. (Plus thats free)
Less time it school= more time in the workforce, less debt etc..

The financial issues have nothing to do with the length of the degree. It has everything to do with handing out money to anyone that can fog a mirror.

I disagree. You're focusing on the wrong aspect here.

A lot of my core engineering classes weren't necessary to do what I do for a living. Should we get rid of those too?

HE could have chose something other than golf or badminton. I know that much for sure.
Or, you know, I had to have XXX hours from this general elective group, and only these stupid classes fit my schedule.
You failed to bring up the other stupid pointless classes like sociology, jock physics, and music lecture.
Those are classes almost every freshman at UofA is told to take.

That your statement of "few" is highly false...

Correct, majors and those curricula employ electives where the student can tailor their learning for their goals.

employ academic counselors
So you are using the current system as an example yet want to change it
