My caveat of course is I went to college when 2 semesters including R&B/books was around $4,000.

In today's climate, isn't it time the old standard of 4 years and 120+ hours to graduation is archaic and simply not needed?

Do young adults in their 20's need to waste time on any type of elective not directly contributing to their core major focus/career?

Scale back on the BS... eliminating the need to spend 4 years at a public or private institution only exacerbates the in the red financial burden of kids and parents today. Drop the hours to what is logically needed to be prepared for the REAL next level which is OTJ training. 6 semesters is more than enough.

It's time for the government to stop backing loans for people who have no business getting a liberal arts degree from a 55k/y school.

That's a long way of saying more people should be going for their associates instead of bachelors.

College isn't trade school.

Or we could get govt out of the student loan business.

College costs (like medical costs) began to skyrocket with the govt. loan programs. The more money they make available the more it costs.

Yes. It's part of a well-rounded education and is one of the critical components of a higher education. If you don't want the BS, then go to welding school.

The OT has about as good of a grasp on statistics as Gilbert Grape. The vast vast majority of college students attend public universities and the average debt load is still significant. This OT myth that 90% of college students are at Middlebury majoring in Women's Studies has about as much credibility as Peej on family crises.

Why would a university reduce the time a student spends on campus? The longer they are here the more money they make.

Is that a way to put you think college is to slowly assimilate kids to be an adult in an adult world? Pretty GD expensive lesson to learn in terms of learning maturity. I think it's a paradigm that's largely bullshite.

Also let them pay back their loans with pre-tax money.

You can pay for tuition with pre-tax dollars, so why not student loans?

The debt load is significant because they dont care prior to attending school. They dont make decisions to lessen their burden from the start. Instead they go off to major colleges, away from home, take out loans for more than the usual needs, then bitch and complain about their total loan burden after the fact.

You know what, you're dead on.

The second LSU (or Arkansas/Georgia/Whomever) branches off campuses within a campus and treated them independently would be the second each would learn to be efficient.

dont worry the college issue will resolve itself in the future. People are living longer, retiring later combined with automation coming en masse, job prospects are only going to get worse for the average person over the coming 25 years.

Yes. College is about exploring knowledge and learning. Not dedicated job training.

I actually don't feel like many of my classes were a complete waste. Now, did I need Sociology or Geology? Probably not, but off of the top of my head those are pretty much the only classes I can think of that were pointless.
