College isn't just about maximizing your earning potential. Its main objective is to teach.

Plus, can't say I've met many engineers, doctors, lawyers, CPAs, etc that only went to trade school.

The debt load is significant because they dont care prior to attending school. They dont make decisions to lessen their burden from the start. Instead they go off to major colleges, away from home, take out loans for more than the usual needs, then bitch and complain about their total loan burden after the fact.

I don't disagree that people should be aware of the costs, I'm saying the costs have risen ridiculously high because of the government's intrusion into the market. Louisiana schools are pretty cheap relative to the national average and even they are $4-6000 a semester without TOPS(which will be gone soon anyway).

My family owns trade schools. We have sold off the major one, but have had up to 3000 students at one time. Jobs are easier to find, pay better from the start, but unless you start your own business in that trade, you dont have much growth potential

My friends with associates degrees would beg to differ. PTECH baws are doing great, though.

I actually don't feel like many of my classes were a complete waste. Now, did I need Sociology or Geology? Probably not, but off of the top of my head those are pretty much the only classes I can think of that were pointless.

Don't get me wrong now, I thought Astrology, Golf and Pavlov's Dog were interesting as well. My question is in today's climate, aren't we past that in terms of career prep? I have never ever been in an interview, business presentation or annual review and discussed how to place the ball back in my stance for a wind cheater.

Check back with that CPA is about 5 years. And really check back with them when they are senior staff or above.

Let's say it again so that perhaps it sinks in.

I dont deny that government intrusion has inflated cost, but I disagree on saying the cost are high. From an investment standpoint, they are extremely low

ETA, I am speaking about tuition and book expenses, not the frivolous waste in student loans

Ever met someone wanting to properly build a bridge and talk for half the day about the intricacies of Meteorology?

"College is not a trade school". or college exists to make well rounded citizens is anice fantasy, yet almost very prospective college student enrolls with the hope that the additional education will lead to a job. It is time to quit pretending that students are attending college for something other than vocational education and design curriculums that meet their and prospective employers needs.

This is a pretty stupid question considering the many meteorology hobbyists we have on this board during hurricane season that have day jobs.

What plumbers and mechanics make that? I have not met a single one. I've ran across a few plumbers making in the mid 40s, but they are on call all the time and work alot. The guy who owns the plumbing business is making a killing though. I've never met one mechanic that makes six figures either. They shop owner makes a good bit if it is a self owned shop. If it is a corporate shop I'd imagine the manager of the shop is probably doing well too.

And you're being obtuse to think side interests can only be learned by credit hour payment.

All of those require school past an undergrad degree. Technically the CPA doesn't need a masters, but the main requirement to even sit for the test is 150 hours, and it is spelled out down to the classes you need in business school and accounting in particular. The first time I sat for it, I had completed my 150 hours, but one was in a June term of Summer semester and the school didn't finalize credits until both the June and July sessions were complete, so it wasn't on a transcript, and I couldn't even register to take the exam yet.

And as far as Doctors and Lawyers, they all have to pass some sort of test as well. The purpose of the graduate degree programs is specific training to their career. Undergrad needs to stay as a well rounded 4 year degree. The smart people choose business, engineering, science, etc. We still need Archery, Anthropology, and underwater basket weaving to keep these "student" athletes eligible so we can enjoy our "amateur" college sports.

That's a long way of saying more people should be going for their associates instead of bachelors.

Sort of. You can call the degree what you want, we're fundamentally redefining what a bachelor's or alternatively, what an associates is. Right now, an associates doesn't get into the meat of a major, its all foundation.

If you streamline curriculum to the 2 years you really need, call it what you want, but the OPs argument isn't about the naming convention, its about getting to the point.
