Sidebar: why is MSY the most incompetent baggage-handling facility in the first world?

And it was impossible to sleep in the tents, lol.
I’d catch Zs in the MWR.
By 2011, most permanent party was in hard barracks, I stayed in those Trailers near the BX.

7 hours... Was a connecting flight and we had a 2.5 hour layover, thought great we can eat, get some drinks, rest before the next one. The flight was delayed an hour due to no pilot, then another hour, then finally rebooked to a different gate. Had I known it would be 7 hours, maybe I would have left the airport but the whole, hour, then hour, then whatever made it impossible.

The worst was probably Atlanta waiting on a flight to BR that nearly didn’t leave. But 10 hours later we were in the air, well after midnight. Ever since then, if we get to be around 9-10 pm and still no signs of departing after several hours delay, I’ll try to get on a morning flight. Suck it up and get a room and maybe a good night’s sleep and try again tomorrow.
Not a delay, but I happened to be in the air, London to Baltimore, when WOW Airlines abruptly folded. None of the crew had a job anymore when we landed. Anybody who had a flight booked was SOL with WOW.

I fly a lot. 22 hours… never, not once. Probably 12 or so.
22 hours.. you have my respect.

had Puerta Plata layovers the month the Birgenair flight crashed leaving there, got to know the crew relatively well as they were there all month and we were there once a week, their company went bankrupt as they were inbound and just told them to stay put and they’d figure out a charter to get them out of there

One time we were flying home from Naples. We had a connecting flight in Paris. Because our plane was delayed leaving that third world airport in Naples we missed our flight in Paris. We didn’t have to stay in the airport, but the airline put us up at a rinky dink hotel near the airport where we couldn’t even change clothes because we had no luggage
Just be glad you were in Europe, I think the EU has some strong traveler protections that are way better than what airlines offer state side. Even though they only put you in the a French equivalent to a L’motel de Six. I guess you were expecting to stay at the Paris Ritz or the Le Belgrand.

not more than an hour delay ever even when I commuted to L.A. from Lake Chuck for 2 years. I was stuck in a SW plane on a runway in Ok City for 3 hrs. A coworker went mental during that time.

Probably DFW for me and it was ~8 hours or so if you include the 3 hr flight i took from DFW-EGE that diverted back to DFW once we were over Colorado due to snow, cancelled, next flight cancelled, and then found a connecting DFW-PHX-DEN that had a 3 hour maintenance issue in PHX even though it was the same plane.
I have a feeling some people tomorrow are going to have a long day trying to connect or fly through Charlotte

10 days stuck in Europe due to a volcanic eruption in Iceland. Booked a minimum 3 flights out of different airports daily but all ended up cancelled. They of course strung us out until the last minute each time.

In the airport: 8 hour layover in Doha
Stuck: 12 hours after scheduled departure after Air France cancelled our flight. Rebooked us on Emirates and gave us a hotel for the day (5am to 5pm).

24 hours give or take with no place to stay overnight in Atlanta Airport. Duck Dynasty family was in same situation so they provided entertainment. Made it memorable but it was certainly miserable.

I was rotating to Afghanistan by 2011.
Got stuck on Ali and after 2 weeks got permission to make it there on my own. They had this private airline that charged a king’s ransom, but it flew into Bagram.

I spent the night on the floor of the Denver airport on a layover in July 2024. It was the computer glitch that grounded flights all over the country. I think I was there about 14 hours, IIRC. My checked bag never made it to Seattle. I had to buy clothes for a 3-day stay. My bag was shipped to my house and I got it three days after I got home.
I don’t fly a lot so I learned some lessons. Don’t check bags if you can pack light. Air tags on all checked luggage.
