I'd live in San Antonio and spend weekends, holidays and good part of summer on the ranch, not full time.

frick that. Give me a vast ranch over cookie cutter suburbia any day
True rural living has its pluses, but it has a shite ton of minuses to that get ignored because if romanticism

Go live there for month or 6 or whatever and see how you like it. You’ll get Collection of opinions on here, some helpful and some not. But it’s obviously something you want to at least explore. If you never do you’ll always wonder.

If he is single a legit concern needs to be is he ok with either not finding a woman or settling for someone hideous or crazy? In a very rural community you aren’t going to have a true plethora of women to choose from

The whole thing is about 20k I think. But it is split between my grandfather his sister and his father.

This is definitely something I have thought of. I could potentially date a girl from the border town though if I don’t find a girl by the time I do it.

So why don’t you just stay there for free/in exchange for maintenance and see what you think?

Seems boring, but do you.

You sound like a city guy, no doubt. I’m not sure you would survive. Additionally, living near Eagle Pass, Laredo, Zapata, etc would not advisable if you ever decided to have kids and get them educated locally.

Does Eagle Ford Shale ring a bell?

Do you expect to inherit the entirety of the property or just your father’s undivided interest? Food for thought as you might be dealing with more co-owners once your grandfather and aunt pass away.

Set up a couple of game cameras to see if it’s a drug route.

I would guess it will be split evenly among my mom and her siblings so by the time I inherit it it will not be more than a couple thousand acres. That’s fine with me though, if I could live on it I wouldn’t be too worried about owning it. My family is close so I don’t think it will be a huge issue but I guess we will see what happens when my grandpa passes. He is not super old and in good health so that will hopefully be decades from now.

Of course. My family has made a lot for o&g leases

There is a good private school in Laredo but I know what you mean. I have also considered boarding school, which is what my grandfather did

Between all my family there is often somebody down there staying for a weekend or whatever. Doesn’t seem to be drugs but definitely some wets crossing to get to the highway that runs parallel to my ranch. If there are drug smugglers they definitely stay away from the house
