If it doesn't involve electronics, the kids won't play with it.

I'm so glad we are out of the kid birthday party phase. We spent a small fortune, seemed like every weekend there was a party for someone in the class.

Sounds like a great idea, just have friends over and let them play a little bit and have cake and ice cream. The money some people spent on parties was ridiculous to begin with and then the next party had to outdo the previous one.

Put up a spacewalk and then head inside for adult beverages was the best party!

“Don’t bring presents, just come and hang out and enjoy yourself.”

I respect that. I actually wanted to do this for my wedding. I hate the idea of inviting a bunch of people to something and expecting them to bring gifts. I don’t want your gifts; I want your company. To me, that’s enough. I find gift registeries to be inherently tacky but I understand the concept behind them so whatever.

I wish more people thought like those parents.

I think it is great. Kid will probably get lots of stuff through family and they just want people to come and not have to buy anything. what is wrong with that exactly?

I would probably hit my wife if she ever dressed our son like that

AND, the horror I bring like a $10 gift.

That's kind of my point here, I don't want your $10 junk that I will have to throw away in 3 weeks and i'm not expecting people who know my kid from school to spend $65 on a gift.

Lame complaint.

I went to a friends 2yo bday this weekend she wanted no gifts. So I just spent a week saying how I was hunting down the messiest thing and gave her a $25 check for the boy.

He's two he won't remember any toy he gets for long and she'll be able to pick him out something for a rainy day.

Pretty much everybody else also ignored the no presents thing in some fashion. But it is what it is.

That's what we tell people. My kids are 5 and 3 and will have a giant water slide and a pool. They dont need things, they are just going to want their friends there for the weekend. Well have beer and food, just come and let your kids have a good time and enjoy yourself. My kids get enough stuff from their Grand Parents and other family members throughout the year.

but is one of the best parts about a birthday party getting the presents?

The kid is probably still going to get a ton of gifts from the parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc.

They don't need more gifts from the kids at the party. I don't think its a bad idea at all. My kid is 5 months old and already has 2 baskets full of toys, none of which I bought. He obviously doesn't have friends, so this all came from family. If you have family gifts and then a bunch of kids giving too the kids is going to get like 30 new toys. No one needs that much stuff.

Well not shite with a 2 year old. Having a bday party for any kid under 3 is pretty much worthless for the kid anyone, its for the parents. The card I got today was for a 3 year old, but I'm talking kids that are like 5 plus that actually know what's up.

Barbie and action figures are like $6-10. Who can't afford that?

I never said anyone HAS to bring anything. I have single friends over all the time for our kids Bday parties just to grille out and hang out with. I've never expected anyone to bring a gift.

We simply don't put anything on the invitation except the date and time of the party.

My point was that telling people you are wealthy enough your kid doesn't need a gift is snobby as hell to me. As I said, if your kid can't have an $8 action figure that's on the parents for spoiling them too much.

ETA: I give up, never mind. FWIW, both women I can think of put their kids in the outfits above routinely.

Someone gave my son smoked LSU overalls. They must hate him.

Huge waste of money because he will never be allowed to wear them.

So the gift was all about you and not a child all along. Thank you for establishing that at the end.

It is all about what you want and don't want.

That's right...smocked stuff isn't cheap is it.

Some of the smocked stuff looks cute on little girls. The stuff for little boys not so much...well don't be upset if he is questioning his manhood later on in life. I mean...you are dressing him up like a little girl as a child

Think this is your problem here. You're making it into a spoiling the kid/wealth issue. When it's presence is the present, let the kids have a ball, adults visit, and call it a day.
