Why are you getting your panties in a bunch when A) you don’t have to buy a present and B) It’s not your kid?

If your kid is so spoiled they don't need any presents from friends, how about you stop buying them so much crap yourself?
So, you're complaining that you don't have to buy their kid a gift? Bring one anyway, if it bothers you that much.
Maybe they're trying to raise their kid to not be a greedy little douche who complains to strangers on a LSU message board when other parents make a parenting decision that doesn't effect him at all.

And also- when I was a kid, I liked presents, but the fun part was having a party with all my friends/classmates and doing shite like bouncing in a moon bounce and eating pizza and cake. Kids don't need a lot more than that.

Again, if they have too much shite they can't get a gift at a birthday part then the parents bought them too much crap to begin with.

The card I got today was for a 3 year old, but I'm talking kids that are like 5 plus that actually know what's up.
Barbie and action figures are like $6-10. Who can't afford that?
It's not about what people can afford or not. My kids simply accumulate way too much stuff. And it isn't all from us. People are always giving them things or passing something along. Not only do we want them to not expect things, we have actually reached a point where minimizing belongings mean our oldest can take care of them and clean up on her own. She actually prefers having less things. She will randomly bring me a box of old toys and say she wants to give them to kids who don't have what she has.
My oldest, 8, has a friend who has always asked for pet food and supplies for the animal shelter instead of presents. She wanted to do something similar this year for her birthday and asked guests for food, toiletries, and baby items for the local food pantry/women shelter. Her guests brought enough to fill the cargo area of my SUV and she was happier helping haul those things into the shelter than I've ever seen her opening presents.
A handful of kids still brought small gifts which she liked but we had fifty+ kids at her party (we invite everyone

I’ve never encountered this but I think it sounds like a good idea. The kids get presents from the family. This makes it a lot easier on all of the parents of the kids that come and the kids still get cake and have a lot of fun. Sounds good to me.

It is common to get this when parents already have toy boxes stuffed with junk or if they’re helicopter parents that want full control over what they’re kids play with. Also if the kid’s class has quite a few poor families that may not be able to afford one.
I still think gifts should be designated optional or pre-approved by the parents in these cases.
People don’t understand that it doesn’t sit right with guests.
It makes guests feel good about themselves when they are able to give something. It’s more about them and some will probably still bring gifts because of this, causing other problems

I agree. And we wonder why kids these days are so spoiled and entitled.
Our neighbors went a step further than no presents and actually said if presents were brought to the party, they would be donated unopened.

So what say you OT, am I that trashy?
I wouldn't say you're trashy.
I would say that much like the presumed lesson the parents are trying to teach the kid (no need for more plastic junk/help less fortunate/etc.), it's a lesson you clearly never learned. So, it's not that you're trashy, it's that your mental acuity is on par with a 3 year old's....

If they’re doing it to “teach the kid a lesson” and not for any practical reason that’s ridiculous.
Why give the kid a party at all? Might as well tell him he doesn’t deserve that either.
It depends on the child’s perspective on whether they receive gifts or not but if they’re a good kid why the frick not, otherwise don’t give them a party at all. Being taught to show appreciation will mean more than low self esteem caused by their parents not allowing them the privledge of gift receiving all other children are perceived to deserve other than them
