Maybe this place isn't for you. OT advice threads are the bread and butter around here.

I get your bit of sarcasm but I'm honestly amazed at how many people in this world don't seem to have the self confidence to be able to just make a decision on their own. I can't stand feeble minded people who always need some affirmation from others before deciding what do to.
To the contrary, most intelligent people want to gather as much information as possible and consider every possible scenario prior to making a decision.
This can be a great resource for that.

I think I need to take a dump. But I should probably check with the OT first

Sometimes the opinion of a stranger with essentially zero ties to you, no skin in the game, and little prior knowledge can give some honest insight.
People often praise a well-known Management Professor at LSU, Kerry Sauley. He taught an easy course called Intro to Management. MGMT 3200 I recall.
Super easy course but he filled that sucker with great life lessons for business and personal growth. Many were common sense but some were really thought-provoking to 21 yr olds who thought they knew everything.
One little exercise was directly related to this topic:
When evaluating a new opportunity at a company should you trust the negative opinion of 1 person who worked there briefly but is your best friend?
Or should you trust the positive opinion of 5 strangers who each worked there for over a year?
We weren't graded on it. It was just another one of those teaching moments that separated Sauley from regular boring instructors.
Granted this was before the internet and availability of Glassdoor/LinkedIN/etc
That was pretty damned good exercise on how to be objective and remove bias from big decisions, especially for young arrogant folks like us heading out into the real world.

Nah...you gotta keep life moving. No time to sit around and get "as much information as possible" and then "consider every possible scenario." That's called analysis paralysis. Grab your nuts, make a decision, and move on.

I think that's the worst possible thing someone making a "life changing decision" can do.

If you (not specifically YOU) don't already have a very strong idea of what you need to do with regard to these decisions or don't already have a specific trusted source to noodle thoughts with then I don't know what to tell you...other than go ahead and let other people make decisions for you.

To be clear...I'm not advocating making "snap judgements" or "kneejerk reactions" or being impulsive...im talking about making your own decisions with the information you have and also trusting your gut.

Most of the "advice topics" here don't seem to be people who are completely clueless and are going to make a decision 100% based on what the OT says.
Most just seem to be gathering information and alternative viewpoints.

Maybe...but I see way too many posts asking for guidance when the decision is painfully obvious to me.

It's stupid and dangerous. Find a lifelong friend that knows you well. They will give you the best advice. The people that post any opinion are not just giving you advice, they are showing off for the board, or maybe just want attention by either posting something pithy or funny. They are as just concerned about upvotes as they are about your situation.

I ask the Outdoors board for for dog name suggestions whenever I get a new one.

A Family member will challenge the advice of medical professionals the likes of specialist Drs who have been practicing for multiple decades, yet will consume almost anything a neighbor suggests has homeopathic value.
Dr. vs Mrs. Neighbor
Too close to call would be bad enough but Mrs Neighbor wins by an internet hypocrites oath!

On another note, message boards are a collection of people with different perspectives. It can be a good location to discover details you might not have considered or been exposed to with just a few trusted people in real life.
In that time, I've raised two kids, got them both through graduate school and I've made some pretty life changing decisions in my career, etc.
I look at the OT as a resource tool when contemplating things or making certain decisions in life. My father is deceased and there are some older/wiser gentlemen on here that offer valuable advice and experiences from time to time.

They already know what they are going to do and just looking for affirmation

Do I ask? No.
Can I see the value in it, in getting different responses and perspectives from strangers? Yes.

Ask the OT. And do the opposite. It's how you win in life.
