First, I don't think that seventh graders are developed enough psychologically to consider such questions.

I'm a male & knew that I was attracted to only females way by 7th grade.

Most seventh graders will already have been exposed to these issues outside the classroom so I see nothing wrong with addressing them inside the classroom.

Most kids that live in the projects will encounter a crackhead. Although studies show that young people should use crack, lets go ahead and talk through the best way to use crack cause they may do it anyway.

Why the hell would they be urging teachers to hang this shite in an educational environment? Being gay goes directly against the theory of evolution and the theory of creationism (whichever you believe), therefore these shite posters provide ZERO educational benefit. If parents want their seventh graders to know what it means to be ghey, then that is on them to explain to their children. Stick with sex ed, not queer ed.

And what qualifications do you hold to make such an assessment? Serious question

None, other than teaching this age group for 20 years and raising two children.

I think that is unfair. However, they may not be mature enough to have an open discussion amongst peers.

It's interesting how this is now becoming the norm. More and more family shows are introducing openly gay characters. Not as many people view it as a moral issue as they once did.

Gender identity though I find more curious. While homosexuals make up ~3% of our population, non gender conforming individuals make up less than 0.3%. I don't know why such time and energy is now being focused on inclusion for a very small population of people.

0.3% is actually substantial in a sense. If that number is correct, then that means that 3 people in 1000 are transgender. That seems high, but the 0.3% figure may actually refer to the percentage of people who experience gender dysphoria--that doesn't mean they actually transition to the other gender. So I'm not sure what to make of that number.

Anyway, let's say it's 3 in 1000 who experience dysphoria. That means that a lot of the kids will know someone who experiences dysphoria, although that person may not be open about it. It doesn't hurt to at least have kids understand that gender dysphoria is a thing that some people experience, and to understand what it means. We don't have to make it an issue about right/wrong, we could just teach kids about the disorder so they understand it.

Teaching kids and reducing ignorance is not a bad thing.

For junior high, that's pretty damn young. They are just discovering their sexuality and have no idea what they're talking about. High school though I don't have a problem with a student led coalition doing it in and amongst themselves. People usually have a better idea what they're talking about then. Wouldn't really want the teachers involved though.

So, I discussed the differences between gender and sexual orientation.

There wasn't a difference until the definition of gender was shifted in the 60's because having inherently male or female qualities was deemed condescending by feminists.

What the frick? Worst analogy ever

Almost every person who lives to the age of sexual maturity will have sex. Every person has a sexual orientation. Seventh grade is a pretty good time to start talking about it in a mature way because that's around the age that some kids will start becoming sexually active.

And having sex is a far cry from using crack. Are you fricking kidding me?

Uhh, he is a teacher. He interacts with students for a living. I think he might have a leg up on you and most of the population, mate.

if you think that's true, I don't know what to tell you

Or...."good point, I don't have a comeback that makes sense".

If you don't think that someone who teaches kids daily doesn't have an inside track as to what is/is not appropriate than the average joe, then I do know what to tell you: You're an idiot.

There's always been a difference. Some cultures in the world recognize more than two genders. Gender is a cultural construct bro

Sexual orientation is a little more objective, although people don't necessarily conform strictly to one sexual orientation. Women are a good example because they're usually more flexible in their orientation (way more bisexual-identified women than men)

Biological sex is an objective thing, but it doesn't necessarily determine sexual orientation, as we all know. And a person's self-identified gender doesn't always match sex.

You can argue against this until you're blue in the face but it won't change the fact that gender is a cultural construct that is distinct from biological sex, and that other cultures have alternative views on gender that don't match our culture's prevailing concept of rigid genders.

Now bring on the hate

This is hilariously true. Many of the same folks that will say they "fricking love science" and retweet shitty posts from Neil deGrasse Tyson are the same ones that are taking an extremely anti-science view on this topic.

I am not saying it's the same thing.

I've seen a few of your posts. You're the mouth breathing 4 chan type, so I don't expect you to understand that it's ridiculous to say "an 11 year old is gonna have sex one day so why not teach'em now".

You know damn well the point of this propaganda is not to merely inform children that these people exist.

This question really hits at the heart of the problem, which is parents and teachers think teens are dumber and not naive than they actually are.

A grown man of your age should be ashamed to be this ignorant and intolerant of others. Meet me at the rest stop in Breaux Bridge at 12AM and I will help alleviate your fears.
