Lexus is killing off the slow-selling GS luxury sedan
Yahoo
Lexus announced in Japan that it will discontinue the entire remaining GS lineup, including the 467-horsepower GS F performance sedan, after production there ends in August. It also follows the brand’s decision last year to not offer the entry-level GS 300 in the U.S. for 2020.
Lexus first launched the GS in 1993 and last gave it full update for its fourth generation in 2012, designating it as the first model to get the signature, polarizing spindle grille. Rumors of its eventual demise have persisted for years, with Lexus sitting with a whopping six sedans and coupes at a time when all momentum is on the side of crossovers and SUVs. Last year, the GS represented just 4% of overall Lexus sales in the car segment.
Through the first three months of 2020, Lexus sold just 624 GS sedans, a decline of more than 34% year over year. Full-year sales in 2019 were down a whopping 48.8%, at just 3,378. The model saw its best sales year in 2015, when it sold 23,117.
Fun fact: Last year, the Infiniti brand was down almost as much as this one single Lexus model that is being canceled. Covid is not going to paint a rosier picture for 2020.

It's just a souped up Camry anyway

That's the ES, which is not being canceled. It competes with the softer luxury sedans like the Buick LaCrosse, Acura TL, Genesis G80, and Lincoln MKZ/Continental. Some of those competitors have been slated for cancellation.
The GS was a real sports sedan on a rear drive chassis. It competes with the Cadillac CT5, Mercedes E350, and BMW 530i. All of those cars also have hardcore performance variants like the GS had. All of those models have been recently updated with significant improvements.
Basically, Lexus is investing where their competitors have divested and vice versa. Everyone is trying to create and protect their niche in the declining sedan market.

How is that even possible?
200 per month. That’s about 4 per state. Probably some states with not a single one sold.

Who’d ever think of a declining sedan market? Seems like the sedan has been part of the American marketplace for decades.

It’s weird to me how so few people want to drive an actual car anymore.

I would pick the ES 350 over the GS series any day. I love the ES 350.

Sorry I always hear that and as good as a Camry is, when you drive a Lexus you know it’s not a Camry.

Crossovers. MPG difference is negligible nowadays, more interior cargo space, taller profile.

Infiniti was dead even without covid.
Sedans have been dying for a while

A sedan is so limited in function it no longer makes sense. Just fromy daily observations it seems like Lexus sells a ton of the RX350 SUVs

What has changed from when it apparently did?

Minivans have even more function.

Crossovers offer car like ride quality, car like mpg, and have more room.
Trucks became roomy with the crew cab and now are just as luxurious with interiors.
The question is why would you buy a sedan?

A have an Accord and love it. WOuld probably buy a Camry if I had to buy a car tomorrow though.
I guess I'm really just a boring, middled aged white guy.
