But, do people really believe...
1) war was over solely slavery
2)hundreds of thousands of men in a nation of what 20-30 million would take up arms over slavery?
Yes. If you lived outside the South, you would know this.
My school grade years were in New York, and that is pretty much how it is taught. The Southern version of the war is much different than Northern version.

There's slavery all over middle east, Africa, and Asia nowadays. I don't see anybody taking up arms.
It is not official government sanctioned slavery, that is what existed in the world back in the 1800s and before. There is slavery still in the USA, if you want to go down that route.

You fought for where you lived. Like 95+% fought for state they lived in
People were also extremely ignorant back then, lacking proper schooling and access to communication/information. How many would have fought, if they had the knowledge we had today?

I bet he froze like a statue when he saw that.

You owe reparations too, but don't take my word for it!

I learned from my DNA test that lily white me is 1% African.
When they hand out reparations, do I get a 1% share?

From whom do you think the Mississippi Rebs were rebelling from?
In an age of cancel culture, I am still baffled that the University of Mississippi mascot has lasted.

Why? It's not like he knew the guy.

This is a myth that won’t die. Literacy rates in the US were higher in 1850, over 90%, than they are today, 79%.

So, does he change his stance on the monuments?

Just look at the eloquence of the politicians' speeches back then compared to the dumbed down approach they have to use today for an indication of the current state of our populace.

Exactly. Even something as simple as Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address would seem like a foreign language to the average 20 year old today.

Yes, I'm sure this Confederate reservist owned slaves and was fighting to protect slavery.
These people have the intellect of Wile E Coyote.

There's always stuff like this on Finding Your Roots. Skip does a good job of rubbing that shite in on his guests.

Enjoy your collective guilt, Levar. It’s ok though, Spike Lee is related to actual slave plantation owners. Just apologize to AmeriKKKa and transfer some wealth to a black supremacy group like BLM and we will all pretend it’s all good.

What are the literacy rates for non blacks today (which is what your chart shows)? I suspect they aren't far off from that 90% number, but I'm sure I could be wrong.
ETA: I know it's not totally relevant to the discussion, but I imagine the literacy rate would have been much lower if blacks had been included in those numbers, especially since they were mostly either still slaves or former slaves.

One of my mom's favorite stories to tell was randomly meeting a lady at the DMV with the same last name. They got to talking about where they were from and family reunions and such. My mom is white; The other lady is black. There was no animosity. They were both happy to be talking to someone who had roots in the same area.
