I'd love to know the official percentage of motorcycle owners that have been hospitalized because of a wreck. In my unscientific surveying, it seems to be 100%.

Yeah, it's a badge of honor for them (if they live, relatively unbraindamaged).

I guess it is the so many things that can go wrong.

1. A driver of a real vehicle (Mini Cooper, Smart Car, trike, etc.) makes a mistake in front, beside or behind you? Emergency room.

2. Weather changes suddenly? Emergency room.

3. Oil on the road? Emergency room.

4. Get distracted? Emergency room.

5. Loose gravel or sand unexpectedly falls off construction or agricultural vehicles? Emergency room.

6. Squirrel thinks he can make it? Emergency room.,

etc.

What’s your point? I was. There’s an inherent risk. Most of the time it’s not the motorcyclist fault when a wreck occurs. I’m not mad about mine at anyone. I made a choice to have one. I took the risk. Is what it is.

Edit: and I didn’t sue a damn soul after either.

I know 2 people personally who'v been seriously injured in motorcycle accidents. One lost his entire leg from the knee down. The other had all the skin, muscle and tendons completely torn off the back of his leg.

They both still ride today. Must be one hell of a drug.

My father in law flipped over the front of his, broke his clavicle and cracked some ribs, and had to have surgery. But at the scene he didn’t want them to cut his jacket off of him because it was expensive. I’m thinking, you just totaled a bike, and you’re headed to the ER and then surgery, and you’re going to be out of work for several weeks, but you’re worried about a leather jacket? It’s crazy. He quit riding the racing bikes after that but still rides.

They make vests that have airbags now.

I ride dirt and street. I accept the risks and ride as best I can given all that can happen.

I have a few rules.

Never ride in low visibility conditions.

Limit city driving (highways and country roads seem far safer than city driving )

Stay off poor conditioned roads.

Wear all safety gear.

Zero drinks.

Keep good distance and drive the bike out of danger (don’t panic).

Keep the speed reasonable.

On dirt? Is usually balls to the wall lol.

Everything you listed can be mitigated with safe riding practices.

Wow, I guess you're the kid that wore the safety helmet in kindergarden. You forgot a few.....
wind blows-emergency room
banana peel in road-emergency room
bottle cap on road-emergency room

There are risks to everything we do, don't go all Mother Theresa when someone brings up motorcycles. And for fricks sake don't refer to minicoopers and smart cars as " real vehicles", that is just embarrassing.

I won't dismiss the risk but I rode for years and never had an incident land me in the hospital.

What are you getting at with this? To me it's sort of the cincher against regularly riding one on public roadways.

I will give you 1, you aren't winning against a car, but 2-6 are all not automatic crashes much less hospital.

2 - I've ridden in snow storms, didn't crash. Rain isn't bad at all, just watch your speed especially in places where water will stand.

3 - Same as above, I mean I have ridden up at Deal's Gap where stupid a** bear hunters would dump all sorts of shite in the road like oil to try and scare off motorcyclists. It's all about riding in your limits and where you can monitor road conditions.

4 - I never had an issue getting distracted on a motorcycle, it's different than riding in a car. I've ridden 1000s of miles across the country and back again, never had this issue.

5 - Same as 2 and 3

6 - I've hit turkey, squirrels aren't an issue. Need something bigger.

A lot of these are preventable by just learning to ride on a dirt bike first for most of these so you understand what to do with little to no traction.

Putting it down doesn't mean emergency room trip either. I had a fun high side at over 100 at Barber that had me riding 30 minutes later for the next session.
