A fly is in a railroad car, hovering stationary in one position and not in contact with any portion of its surroundings. The train begins to accelerate forward. Does the fly remain stationary until the back wall strikes it, or does it begin to move forward along with the train? Don't google it, just reason it in your mind.

Stationary.

Same as if you jump in an elevator just before it starts moving

It will move backwards a little at first as the train starts to accelerate faster than the air inside the compartment. Same reason you'll feel pushed back into your seat a little when it starts accelerating.

Pretty quickly though the volume of air will reach the same speed as the train and the fly will remain stationary compared to the train car.

Is there an external force which acts upon the body of the fly?

When have you ever seen a fly hover stationary?

If you toss a ball in the air and then walk away, the ball does not follow you. Pretty sure the same applies.
