Hell yeah, I don't think I'll ever see that money anyway. Would be a guarantee that I would get to use it in some form or fashion.

Not horrible at face value. But consider that this would require federal government employees managing complex puts and takes at an individual level which may occur multiple times for multiple childbirths.

The conspiracy theorist in me sees this as an experiment to open up the idea of borrowing from SS fund for various other reasons in order to effectively push the retirement age back without actually enacting a law doing so.
Two weeks of parental leave back in 2019? Future value of that is actually 2 years of SS contributions, you must have missed the fine print.

Could also see this as a catalyst for private companies to do away with maternity/paternity leave. Just let SS take care of it instead.

Are you really expecting to get anything back from social security anyway? It's not factoring into my retirement plans at all.

That's my question. Not in the way you think though. My wife is a teacher in Bienville Parish. She does not pay into the SS system nor does she get paid parental leave. She is pregnant and was told when her sick days run out she will still be covered by FMLA for her job, but she will not be paid.

That leave is covered by FLMA, and should remain. I know some employers let you take short term disability to cover pregnancy, but I haven't heard of a business that pays workers salary when on maternity leave. I worked for a business that tried to ahve the best benefits in the industry and they didn't do this, so while it may happen, its pretty rare.
I do know some states (CA for instance) offers paid maternity leave.
