I'll put in another vote for Honda. Mine is a craftsman with the Honda Engine. Had to change the spark plug after the first 6 months, but it has ran perfectly ever since.
It doesn't have as many bells and whistles as some of the other brands with that engine, but it has been a solid mower.

Newer John Deere sucks. Go with Honda like I finally did.

Self propelled is definitely worth the extra money.
If you have a small yard, it's not worth the money to get the self-propelled. It's just one more thing to repair.

I just bought a Troy Bilt front wheel drive from Lowe's 2 weeks ago and am pretty happy with it. The front wheel drive does make it zig-zag a little. Still getting use to that.

I don't like the self propelled b/c they can not go backwards
ETA: get a 0 turn. Dixie or ex mark
ETA2: didn't read about the yard size

Two suggestions:
1. Ask for the BBC. (That's Blade Brake Clutch.)
2. Use pure gas only, no ethanol.

Get a B&S 190cc push mower. Mine's a Yardman from Home Depot for $239 and they are assembled in the USA. Self-propelled mowers for lazy azzes; be a man and push the damn thing yourself. If you have a self-propelled, a good portion of the power is going to the wheels meaning less power to the blade and in high grass, the motor will bog down.

You would think with you being so many that you would be right once in a while. I'll put my sissy Honda up against your pos any day. Bring it.

I do not like self propelled for the same reason. recently repaced lawnmower with self propelled and the wife even hated it. they don't go backwards and are to heavy to just jerk around. If you have a square yard with no obstructions and want to only cut back and forth they may be ok. Mine was only used for trim work.

At one time I had a TB warranty repair center and HOP which is Husqvarna center also.
TB with Honda for the price gets my vote.
Honda OHC and more efficient than the Briggs engines or kohler on some of the Husqvarna unit.
TB has a rake on the front to lift the grass, better air flow, and lighter than Husqvarna.
If you got small yard it is easier to move around.
Yes TB made in Tupelo, MS.
Easier and quicker to get parts typically parts from the distributor comes in 48 hours or less compared to other brands.
My certifications
Part owner in 4 dealers until I sold out in 2013
Sold Husqvarna, MTD, gravely, hustler, Dixie chopper, scag, Dixon, and Kubota in Ope
Tractors Tafe, Belarus
Was a Warranty repair center for Kawasaki, kohler, and Briggs.
MTD, Honda, stihl, and HOP repair center
Passed my level II tech certification with kohler engines which most shops don't send people to anymore.

by I have had a Toro Personal Pace for 9 years and it still starts on first or second pull.
Mine is 7 1/2 and starts on every pull unless its been sitting up longer than a few weeks then its the second pull. Has an aluminum deck which is nice. My model has a Briggs and Stratton GTS (Guaranteed To Start) and so far it has.

Thanks for the recommendations. Went with the Troy Bilt Honda with no self propel. I do have to go backwards quite a bit and under bushes and what not. Never had self propel and don't think I would like it.

I've never had self propelled drive before, is it worth the extra money
Not in my opinion...they're heavy and cumbersome.
IMO, get the cheapest one you can find with a good B&S engine and only use non-ethanol gas.

My 7hp Toro PP goes backwards. I use it every day. I would say that the Super Recycler design does not work well with wet grass at all. It just clumps up and will eventually clog up so bad it stalls the engine. If I were getting another one, it wouldn't be that model

My yard takes about an hour to mow pushing.
I push mower mine and use a DR Trimmer. I got the commercial model, $850. I cut an area in front of a seawall as well as heavy growth in unoccupied land next to mine. That sucker will cut anything and is worth every penny, every penny. Do get the warranty.
I am on my second machine in 8 years. Best mower I have ever had

I got a Cub Cadet last year.Self-propelled.
I'm happy with it.
My biggest issue was getting one with no plastic parts, wheels, etc.
My last mower,a Huskavarna(sp) had plastic wheels and it didn't last. The self-propelled went out also after 2 years.
I think I payed $239,on sale.

I've owned 4 self propelled mowers and have never had an issue pulling the thing backwards.
I would go with Redmax or Honda
