My 15 year Craftsman mower went kaput last week and need a new one. My yard isn't that big, but it is a bit thick with bermuda grass.

Was leaning towards the Troy Bilt with 160 CC Honda motor for $249 at Lowes. But they also have a Husqvarna with front wheel drive and same motor for $329.

I've never had self propelled drive before, is it worth the extra money. My yard takes about an hour to mow pushing.

Or should I look at a 190 CC Briggs and Stratton engine for about the same price?

I have this one. Bought it from Lowe's last year. Love it. Starts on 1st pull everytime and makes a nice even cut. Mulching kit on it is great. Self propelled is definitely worth the extra money.

self propel FTMFW

don't know the model I had, but 22" blades (or was it 18...?)
Cut off supply to the fuel lines and burn out what's left in them when you're done....no issues I can remember

You're damn right it is. I have a $300 walk behind John Deere. At high speed it will literally pull you around the lawn. Had it about 20 years and no problems. Similar to this.

I've got a Troy Built that says it will start on the first pull everytime....had it for about 4 years so far, never had a problem with it. Got it at Lowes.

Spent a little extra for my Honda SP and haven't regretted it. That thing goes through grass better than Willie Nelson.

My old toro PP with a Tecumseh was a beast until the self propelled stuff wore out so I gave it away

Have a husqvarna with Honda engine now and it runs great

While the PP is cool, I prefer to be pulled

Anything with a Honda engine is going to be good but Briggs and Stratton is one of the best small engines out there.

Honda or nothing. The base model self-propelled is $400 and you can mow one-handed with it.

I have a Lawnboy with a Honda engine. It's 7 years old & still starts on the first pull. Self propelled is definitely worth the extra money, but try to get one that moves when you move/ stops when you stop. Makes it a lot easier.

Honda and it's not even close. I tried to save a $100 or so and bought the Husqvarna with the Honda 190 engine. The Self propelled broke on the 3rd mow AND it wasn't warranted by Husqvarna, it was by a 3rd party that made it.

I took it back.

I got the Honda. It's got a composite deck with a lifetime warranty and Honda covers everything else for 5 years. Plus the Husqvarna weighed a ton, this composite deck makes the Honda feather light. So when you're pulling it backwards and such it's a dream. And to switch from bag discharge or mulch all you do is slide the green handle back and forth.

Self propelled so you can text and/or post on TD while mowing.
