No he doesn't. I'm an attorney 20 minutes outside of Dallas (still Dallas) and family law practitioners are not "clearing" $1 million/yr on their own nor are misdemeanor prosecutors starting at six figures. You're asking the right a questions in regards to mapping out your future but I'd have more realistic expectations of what this career will earn you or you'll be in for a rude awakening.

i'm not discounting it by any means. my point is, you don't have to be a genius to pass. I don't mind putting in the work. I didn't come this far to fail because of a lack of effort.

“Commercial trial lawyers” may be the biggest dorks/tools in the legal field

Well, who doesn't want a high-paying in-house job? The only downside to those is they seem to be the first thing to go when times get tough with the company.
The only way I would ever recommend anyone go to law school is if they are going into IP.

I don’t know about being a new grad or going to law school but it isn’t a bad time to be a young lawyer. Boomers are retiring and going part time and there’s a need for younger attorneys that work hard and aren’t socially retarded.

I pulled in about 750k as a solo last year and I worked absolutely non stop. 1 million in family law as a solo ain't possible unless they're talking about gross and they have a bunch of staff/associates

Clearing $1m a year means making what $2m a year in collections. Pay rent, staff, taxes, and you might net $1m. So maybe billing $1000 an hour with a 100% collection rate. If that’s true, go work for that guy immediately.

There is a rural lawyer shortage

I would do option #1 but I would move back home in more like 2-3 years. What did you do before law school? Saw you mention oil and gas.
If my Landman career doesn’t pan out how I like I will probably go to law school and try to start a small town solo firm

I predict you’re going to have suicidal ideations when the reality of your actual career options comes to fruition.

There are 2 issues
1. There is a rural money issue. Rural areas get poorer and poorer everyday.
2. There is a desperate need for consolidation of these judicial districts in rural areas. They're nothing more than inefficient local grifting on the public, at this point. Consolidation of judicial districts and eliminating rural courts to streamline the process is desperately needed due to the decreased demand as rural areas die.

last job was a PM at an EPC firm building refinery reactors/heat exchangers/air coolers, etc. before that I was a landman.

I think your expectations on salary at these various places are off. You will not make 100000 as a first year asst DA but you will likely make half that amount and will gain experience in the court room. You will learn how to try a case and have skills to handle a jury trial. You may be able to work and have a civil practice at the same time but you will not have an abundance of time as an assistant DA but at some point at around 5 years you will see that you can likely stop working at the da s office. Reluctantly I would tell you that there is likely very few attorneys making a net million dollars a year practicing family law. Overhead will likely be at least 25 to 50% .Im guessing most family lawyers earn between net between 50000 and 20000. Younger inexperienced attorneys closer to the bottom number and more experienced the top.Top family lawyers can make more and senior attorneys with associates and junior partners can carve out some the younger attorneys salaries to make more. There is considerable work and time for a solo attorney to reach the top number and would likely take at least 5 years to get there. I can’t speak of the corporate law. If you work hard in your home town and your family is connected with a good reputation you will have the option to run for office at some point for DA or Judge. These political jobs pay well with great benefits but usually come with the stress of elections. They can be rewarding as well. You should consider your life to this point and think of the experiences you personally have had that might lead you in the direction of your options. You will enjoy your life more as you help people with your skills.

When I scroll and see this thread title I read “law baws” as “law dogs” in Ike Clanton’s voice. "Listen, Mr. Kansas Law Dog. Law don't go around here.”

Most freshly minted lawyers want nothing to do with a courtroom.

Why aren't there more middle eastern attorneys like there is in the medical field, like doctors?
