re: Latest Updates: Russia-Ukraine Conflict

I worked and travelled for the US government in a number of countries of the former Soviet Union. Although they might have Moldova, Russia and Armenia close on their heels. Ukraine would win that contest. I think Ukrainians would be upset if they did not win that contest. Just about every military and government official I met openly bragged about their corruption. It was like living amongst the genetic clones of deceased Louisiana governor Edwin Edwards.

Wait, no way, a bunch of hold overs fromthe Soviet Union were corrupt? Incredible. Good thing the Ukrainians are trying to move away from that influence as judged by their recent elections. Soviet Vlad has trouble letting go though.

Adding that as a Platoon Sergeant and as a First Sergeant, I made sure to spend a lot of time training on crew duties and platoon level maneuvers, wedge, line, column, action movements, etc. I made sure every PVT knew their duties because in an ambush, you don't have time for commands.
Rounds down the tube before you even announce a contact or action and maneuvering starts immediately.

You had an entirely different experience than I did. When were you over there?

Heck yeah man why would I want to dismount a 72 ton tank with a 120 mm smoothbore cannon and 3 machine guns?
So I can run around in a Nomex coveralls with an M9? F that. I didn't carry a weapon...my weapon carried me.

Elections in Ukraine have never had an effect on diminishing corruption. Louisiana has elections, Chicago has elections, Nigeria has elections. The problem is much more endemic and cultural.

2012 for me. And like I said, I had a very different experience than you did.
They acknowledged a corruption problem in the government. They certainly did not brag about it like you maintain. They acknowledged it like we acknowledge the corruption in our own government. They didn't brag about it, just like we don't. It was a source of embarrassment, just as it is here. Hell we traded stories of corrupt officials getting busted, and agreed not enough was being done in both of our countries. It was a fricked up common ground for us, but in no way was anyone I spoke with proud about it.
Sorry, but I find your story of them bragging about their corruption a bit....far fetched.
ETA: And funny enough, guess who was the President of Ukraine when I was there and the people I talked to complained about the corruption?
I'll give you a hint: He's living in Russia under the protection of Putin right now.

To be fair, Russia eventually using its pipeline as leverage over Germany/EU was also laughably transparent but it kind of, almost, worked.
If Putin would have waited 18 months until after Germany had finished with the redtape and gas was glowing through Nord Stream 2 then it probably would have worked. Russia jumped the gun because they had gotten the EU addicted to Russian gas but not quite hopelessly dependent upon it.

When his cheeks turn purple/black he is a dead man.
Saw this happen with a co worker.
Looks like he is on the way with those puffy cheeks.

The other thing that makes near ambushes a pain in the arse for tanks is that the driver and the gunner don't see the light of day and can become very disoriented because of such a narrow field of vision.
The driver is looking out of 3 small, narrow vision blocks that give you like 60 degrees of vision to the direct front.
The gunner is looking out the GPS sight which used to be 3x and 10x on an M1A1 and is a 3x, 12, and 25x on an M1A2. Teust me, you can get disoriented in the relation to the turret and hull.

The biggest difference I found between Russians and Ukrainians was how they executed their corruption. The Russians typically did it by bullying, the Ukrainians typically did it by grifting. By appearances the Ukrainians were the most friendly of those I dealt with. They would always want to lavish you with hospitality, and every social transaction while it felt genuine was specifically transactional.
USAID and other mil to mil cooperation programs were rife with corruption. The posts of customs enforcement was similar to what it was in the 19th Century in the US. I remember a party where local national workers for the US embassy laughed at a girl who consistently failed her driving test, and considered her a moron for not simply paying her bribe. Ukrainians laughed about how their academic grades were higher based on the bribe.
There even seemed to be a much lower bar for prostitution in the two countries

I'm not blaming you man. The Abrams is a beast. I went through Stryker Leader's Course and it was funny as hell watching the armor guys vs. the infantry guys when it came to dismount.
I think they had the armor bubbas in there for the MGS platform at the time.

Never messed with those. The only 105 I ever pulled triggers on was an old M1.
As a Mike Golf, I loved the ballistics of that M829 APFSDS Sabot. I still remember the CCFs (computer correction factor) for some lot numbers of service sabot ammo years later.
The question to ask someone to know if they know anything about an Abrams is to ask what the gunner's trigger controls were called. Or the access plate to add/check the turbine engine oil. It burns Turboshaft, not regular oil. Answers: Cadillacs (they were made by Cadillac Gage Company) and Bitch Plates
Ask Darth sometime. He likes to act like a Kilo but he spent as much time being a Delta.

Bill Burns claims Putin told him that the window was closing with respect to Russia's ability to use force to shape Ukraine's orientation and that would be one potential explanation. Another is the possibility that he's been ill, perhaps addled from chronic corticosteroids, self-isolating due to fear of catching COVID in such a condition and getting even more informationally isolated. These aren't mutually exclusive, of course.

This thing unstickied? Does that mean the conflict is over?
