Distance from coast surely means less likelihood of soldiers smoking near ammunition like so many would love to believe

The Russian MoD is now saying the Moskva sank while being towed in a storm.

And here's a new statement by the Lithuanian MoD, saying the ship was lying on its side and Turkish and Romanian vessels evacuated only a portion of the crew before it sank less than 2hrs after sending a distress signal.

I saw that this morning, but assumed it wasn't right when the Pentagon said she was still afloat. The Ukrainian statement was something about it slowly sinking. Have to wonder if was scuttled. The Soviet Navy did that plenty in the past.

The missile cruiser "Moskva" sank while being towed to its destination in a storm due to damage to the hull received due to a fire from the detonation of (Ukrainian) ammunition.

Ukrainian ammunition, that is.

I would love to hear how a ship with three layers of missile defense is at the bottom of the Black Sea due to a missile attack. I am just really interested in how its crew completely whiffed on that, UMAV or not. Was it the storm and higher seas? If so would that be a weakness for any naval vessel?

I dunno. Those missile tubes look exposed, but would be interested to hear from folks with naval experience.

#1 factor: Incompetence

I don't know if the stories that are circulating about the ship being distracted by a nearby drone are true or not. There has been reporting that the radar on the ship was pointed in the direction of the drone so it was blind to the incoming missiles.

I find it really hard to believe that the 2nd most powerful ship in the Russian navy had radar that could only look in one direction. Do any of you know if this is true?

It was Russian technology. Does anyone seriously still consider Russia to be an imposing military power?

From what I was reading last might, they distracted the Russians with a drone then hit them with missiles coming from another direction. A modern warship should be able to track more than one threat at the same time, but it's Russia, so...

I have to think that an American or British operative was at work here. Distract them and then sink their battleship. Russia is terrified of western technology and probably had every radar unit trying to analyze the drone. Meanwhile, Ukrainians launched their Harpoons that were recently sent in from the US.

How bout cruising around within range of anti ship missiles you know your enemy has? in fact they demonstrated for you about 2 weeks ago.

BBC brief and succinct

Now does anyone speak or read Turkish to see what one of the rescue ships (that answered the SOS) saw and when?

And did the other Russian ships in the area pull away for a reason?

According to Ukraine, the missiles used were Neptune's which are a locally developed anti-ship missile.

Now, that could be a cover for harpoons provided by the US.

You have to think that our military can knock down every Russian missile before they leave that country.
