Zelensky didn’t like that I gave the order to retreat’ – Lieutenant Colonel of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Shevchuk explained why he was removed from the post of commander of the 59th brigade.
‘There was a risk of encirclement of people in the Pokrovsk direction, I made an independent decision to withdraw personnel from the positions. This is a question of holding a populated area. If it had been a position in the landing, it would not have played such a key role. The Commander-in-Chief and the President didn’t like this, and they decided to remove me from the post’

I don't know how long the current de facto border and/or the active front is, but Google says the land border between Ukraine and Russia is 1974 km. If you spread 20 km. sq. evenly over 1974 km (obviously advances are more in some areas and less in others), then that would be just over 10m per day--or 33 feet in American (British) units. And that's 2.3 miles per year. Again, average, at the recently-claimed / discussed 20 sq. km. per day.

Russia's army is not good at one particular type of combined arms, but they are very good at forcing the other side to fight the type of war they want to fight. They build fortifications and defend the areas they do have with multiple layers, which makes advancing difficult.
The truth is advancing in this war is difficult for both sides in this phase of the war. If Russia continues it's current pace, the war will last several years. It is very difficult to mass forces for a breakthrough given the technology of the battlefield.

If you listen to Putin’s statement, it quickly becomes clear that he politely expressed his willingness to talk and his gratitude for the help in getting Ukraine back to the negotiating table. But in essence, nothing has changed.
Trump won’t be able to make Ukraine back down, and the stubborn EU won’t stop supporting Kyiv. In the end, the U.S. will follow suit—for the sake of its geopolitical interests and money. For Russia, nothing has changed. They’ll once again explain to Ukraine what such a memorandum should include, and Ukraine will keep rejecting it.
And so, we’re likely to witness the same conclusion: that Russia sees no choice but to assert its position through military means.

Former KGB guy sucking up to a guy who likes to be sucked up to doesn't move the needle much for me. Putin is plenty smart enough to know which buttons of Trumps to press and which to avoid.

Putin is saying what we all knew, he wants peace and to him means an Ukraine surrender, or a treaty that gives him the five Oblasts, the downsizing of the Ukraine military, no NATO and a new government that he can control.
In my mind, the key question is now what will Trump do.
