I'll throw out a crazy take... each state's electorate is equal to their number of Representatives plus Senators, so why not divvy up the electoral votes the same way? Whichever candidate wins a congressional district gets that electoral vote. Whichever candidate wins a state overall gets the bonus two electoral votes representing the senators.
If Louisiana voted the same way as they did for Congress, that's 7 REP votes and 1 DEM vote.
California would have had 11 REP votes and 44 DEM votes. One seat is open, but has recently been Republican.
Or just leave it the way it is. I live in a dark red state anyway.

It's idiotic that you really only need to campaign in 15 or so states during any given cycle.
A Repub vote in Cali should have just as much impact as a Dem vote in Texas.
What we have now really only caters to the extremes of each party and makes it nearly impossible for anyone to break the two party stranglehold. It sucks arse.
This is kind of why this country just needs to restart after the real adults in the room show the wannabes how dumb their ideas are and how weak they are, despite their tough talk. The northeast and the west coast need to be their own separate countries to try out their ideas on themselves and be the only ones to suffer for it.

That would be each individual state's decision to do that. I believe a few states already do that, Nebraska and Maine for sure.
