Russians continue to suffer significant losses as they slow down their advance in Ukraine - ISW
Olha Hlushchenko — Tuesday, 4 February 2025, 04:38
Analysts at the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) point out that despite the Russian advance in Ukraine, its pace has slowed, while Russian losses remain high.
Source: ISW
Details: Russian troops continued to suffer heavy losses in January 2025 despite a slower pace of advance compared to previous months at the end of 2024.
Ukraine's Ministry of Defence reported on 3 February that Russian troops suffered 48,240 casualties in January 2025. These are more than three Russian motorised rifle divisions, making January the second-highest month for casualties since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
ISW's geolocation data shows that Russian forces advanced 498 sq km in Ukraine and Russia’s Kursk Oblast in January, or approximately 16.1 sq km per day.
Available data suggests that Russian forces suffered approximately 96 casualties per square kilometre of territory gained.
Ukraine's Ministry of Defence reported that Russian troops suffered 48,670 casualties in December 2024, the highest monthly casualty rate since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, and ISW estimates that Russian forces gained a total of 593 sq km in December 2024.
Quote: "The roughly 100-square-kilometer decrease in seized territory between December 2024 and January 2025, coupled with a similar monthly casualty rate, indicates that Russian forces are taking the same high level of losses despite achieving fewer territorial advances in the near term."
Details: Earlier, ISW noted that the advance of Russian troops slowed down from November 2024 to December 2024.
Quote: "ISW previously assessed that the Russian military command likely tolerated record levels of personnel casualties from September 2024 through November 2024 to facilitate larger territorial gains, but it remains unclear whether the Russian military command will be willing to sustain such casualties if Russian forces' rate of advance continues to decline as Russian forces are advancing on more heavily defended settlements such as Pokrovsk."

"This was part of Zelenskyy's victory plan." - the Office of the President responded to Trump's statement on rare earth resources.
It is reported that Ukraine has special resources, including rare earth elements, and it is crucial to ensure they do not fall into Russia’s hands. That is why Zelenskyy proposed that these resources be protected and used in cooperation with key partners.

Biden administration delayed aid to Ukraine for a year — Reuters
Following Trump's victory in the 2024 elections, the White House sharply accelerated deliveries, fearing that the new president would halt them.
However, prior to this, assistance to Kyiv had been delayed for nearly a year, citing the risk of escalation with Moscow. Reuters journalists, after examining Biden's actions and interviewing 40 sources in the U.S. and Ukraine, found that key deliveries were postponed not only due to Congress but also because of disputes within the administration. Officials were concerned about escalation risks and their own weapons stockpiles.
The past year saw record delays in promised weapons deliveries to Ukraine. According to Reuters sources in Congress, over the year, the U.S. sent Ukraine only 30% of the promised armored vehicles and half of the total aid amount. Moreover, almost all provided equipment was intended for defensive operations, not offensive ones. For example, the delivery of air-to-surface missiles for F-16 aircraft was delayed.
Additionally, the Joe Biden administration failed to spend approximately four billion dollars allocated for aid to Ukraine. These funds have now been transferred to Donald Trump's team.
Earlier, Volodymyr Zelensky told AP in an interview that out of the $177 billion allocated to Ukraine, the country has received only $75 billion.

Interesting tid-bit from the Times. I was looking for more info on specifically where the rare earth minerals that Trump is interested in were located, but the part about Zelensky snubbing a deal with Biden to wait for Trump might be partly why the Biden admin decided to slow play aid delivery.
Will be interesting to see if Ukraine shifts defenses to make sure they don't lose that reserve.

Also notes how much of a dumpster fire California is..... they have huge untapped reserves of rare earths buried in a mountain of red tape. Fortunately, the "rare" part of "rare earth" is a bit of a misnomer.
quote:
Ukrainian authorities say the country holds deposits of more than 20 critical rare earth minerals, with some consulting and equity firms valuing them at several trillion dollars. But experts caution that the true value is hard to estimate as many reserves remain inaccessible, in part because of the Russian occupation of parts of Ukraine.
Ukraine had planned to sign an agreement with the Biden administration late last year to cooperate on extracting and processing minerals. But the Ukrainian authorities postponed the signing of such a deal, in what officials on both sides said was a signal that Kyiv was waiting for Mr. Trump to take office to strike an agreement with him.
In December, a Ukrainian government delegation met with U.S. businessmen in Washington, presenting potential business deals that included acquiring production licenses for critical minerals, either directly or through partnerships with existing license holders, according to a government presentation seen by The New York Times.
But how quickly and effectively Ukraine can finalize these deals remains uncertain. At a conference in Kyiv last week, Ukrainian business leaders and lawmakers stressed that much exploration remains to be done to assess the true value of the country’s critical minerals. And administrative and legislative obstacles still hinder foreign investment in the sector.
What’s more, Russia’s advances on the battlefield have allowed Moscow’s troops to seize significant reserves of rare earth minerals in Ukraine, and they are rapidly approaching other reserves. Russian forces are currently less than seven miles from a major lithium reserve in Ukraine’s southeastern Donetsk region.
Will be interesting to see if Ukraine shifts defenses to make sure they don't lose that reserve.

I’m just glad we can all finally get on the same page.
This war is about REM. Not democracy, not NATO, not “Christianity” or whatever the frick. It’s about the same thing wars have been fought over since Cain killed Able: money and pride.
Russia wants them. The U.S. wants to keep Russia from having them all.
Trump is basically asking Ukraine “do you want Russia to take your resources or do you want to sell them to us? Those are your choices”
I think that’s completely fair. Sucks to be Ukraine but we get the minerals and Russia gets body bags. Win/Win

Concentration matters a lot as to cost to extract. I sold some junk glass lined reactors to a rare earth minerals mining company in the Texas Hill Country 20 years ago. Extracting the minerals from rock and dirt with harsh chemicals chips the glass lining (its actually at baked on epoxy sprayed on in several coats to wetted surface) So they buy normally unsaleable reactors which they don't care if they last for years or not. They company ain't there for a decade. Part of the reason is that China doesn't care about what chemicals it releases to the atmosphere. Thus, cost to produce if far less in China.

That would be in line with what Russia has done during most of this war. Since the initial invasion and the first couple of weeks, Russia has given up far more land than it has taken.

The anti-Ukraine people do not consider all the land that was retaken (over 10% of Ukrainian territory and 51% of all of the territory that Russia initially captured) in 2022 as territory lost.

Are we spouting off things anyone who has followed the war for more than 5 minutes already knows?
I think the more relevant point is "what will Russia end up with once the conflict ends" and the answer is "more than they had when it began" which is bad for Ukraine

In an interview with Radio Svoboda, Sukharevskyi confirmed that Ukraine’s defense sector is actively engaged in research and development (R&D) projects aimed at advancing innovative military technologies. One key focus has been countering enemy aircraft and unmanned aerial systems (UAS), including Iranian-made Shahed drones.
“I will repeat: laser technologies are already striking certain targets at certain altitudes,” Sukharevskyi stated.
Ukraine is claiming to be the first nation to use lasers in combat.
