EU Agrees to Extend Russia Sanctions as Hungary Backs Down
European Union foreign ministers agreed on Monday to extend sanctions on Russia over its war against Ukraine after Hungary lifted its opposition to the move.
Budapest had been stalling the decision since December when Prime Minister Viktor Orban told EU leaders he wanted to wait for Donald Trump’s inauguration before deciding whether to agree to roll over the restrictions. EU sanctions need to be extended every six months and, although it’s usually a routine decision, it requires the backing of all member states.

With all this collapsing by Ukraine, when do you think Russia will take the entirety of Donetsk Oblast? They should be able to take it all by the end of Feb 2025, don't you think?

Russia introduces history textbook that redefines war against Ukraine as justified defense
by Tim Zadorozhnyy January 27, 2025 8:42 PM
Military History of Russia, a new textbook introduced in Moscow on Jan. 27, frames the war in Ukraine as a continuation of the Soviet battle against Nazi Germany, portraying the invasion as a necessary reaction to Western threats, Reuters reported.
The three-volume textbook, targeted at schoolchildren, claims Russia was "forced" to invade Ukraine in 2022, citing long-standing grievances such as NATO's eastward expansion and the 2014 ousting of Ukraine's pro-Russian president, which the textbook characterizes as a Western-backed coup.
Edited by Vladimir Medinsky, a presidential advisor and architect of Kremlin propaganda, the textbook aligns with the Russian government's narrative about the war.
The book describes Ukraine as an "aggressive anti-Russian bridgehead" and emphasizes battlefield heroism while drawing parallels between modern Russian military tactics and those employed by the Soviet army during World War II.
This publication is part of a broader Kremlin effort to reshape public perception through education. In 2023, Russia's Education Ministry updated school history textbooks to include sections on the war in Ukraine — referred to as a "special military operation" — the annexation of Crimea and the impact of Western sanctions.
Russia's Education Ministry initiative, Conversations about Important Things, launched in 2022, promotes themes like patriotism, traditional family values, and Russian nuclear security to students as young as six. The program includes video lessons featuring figures such as Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Patriarch Kirill.
The Kremlin's intensified focus on historical revisionism and ideological education reflects its attempt to solidify domestic support for the war, casting Russia as a defender of sovereignty against a hostile and "decadent" West.
Critics argue these measures are an apparent effort to indoctrinate young Russians and justify the ongoing war to future generations.

the bureaucracy protecting itself.
Yes, an intended byproduct of any system and any government... a bureaucracy that is resistant to change, that looks to protect and ensure the existence of the system or government above all else.
Without a bureaucracy, the US government would collapse.
How people on the Right - of all people - have allowed themselves to be convinced that would be a positive thing is truly astounding to me. I know lots of people on the Left who are anarchists, they fantasize that no government would somehow be a good thing, and I think that would be a Mad Max-like hellscape.
I know the government was small at the country's inception, and small up until around the dawn of the 20th Century... but things got a lot more complicated since then.
The "evil" CIA... its job is to keep the US at the top of the Global Pyramid. That's going to involve some crappy stuff... but do you want China at the top of the Global pyramid, instead?

“Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right.”

Not at all with the growth of self important bureaucrats over the last 50 years. Seriously, they refuse to issue opinions where an area might even be the lightest shade of gray. This causes higher costs for private industry.

Breakthrough toward Dnipropetrovsk: “Otvazhnye” forces have nearly taken Nadezhdynka, storming Novoandreevka and attacking Srybnoye
?? On the left flank of the Pokrovskoye direction, units of the “Center” group continue their powerful offensive, approaching the borders of the Dnipropetrovsk region.
?? Nadezhdynka is virtually under control (consolidation is underway). Just a day ago, our troops advanced 700 meters northward and eastward into Nadezhdynka (Nadeyevka), and now the settlement has been taken in a short time.
?? Novoandreevka is being stormed, with Russian units advancing and attacking from three directions, capturing a significant part of the settlement.
?? Even Ukrainian forces acknowledge Russia’s progress:
? “Between the Solyonaya and Volchya rivers, the Russians managed to secure Nadezhdynka and are now consolidating. The next movement will likely target Kotlyarovka to put the villages further south in a difficult position. Meanwhile, they have begun storming Srybnoye (Serebryanoye) and are targeting Preobrazhenka in the rear.”
? “They are already approaching the Dnipropetrovsk region. Additionally, the Russians are attempting to seize Uspenovka and are trying to enter Novoalexandrovka through the ravines.”

“The Russian tactics are not dynamic, but are causing Ukraine no end of bother. Put simply, Russia has the infantry and Ukraine does not. Issues with mobilisation and desertion have hit Ukraine’s reserves hard. ‘We struggle to replace our battlefield losses,’ says Colonel Pavlo Fedosenko, the commander of a Ukrainian tactical grouping in the Donbas. ‘They might throw a battalion’s worth of soldiers at a position we’ve manned with four or five soldiers.’ The brigades that make up the Donbas frontline are consistently understaffed, under pressure, and cracking. The front line keeps creeping back. ‘We no longer have tactics beyond plugging holes,’ says “Kupol,” the nom de guerre of a now-retired commander, who up until September led a brigade fighting in eastern Donbas. ‘We throw battalions into the chaotic mess and hope we can somehow stop the grind."

Ryazan Refinery suspends work after drone attack - media
27.01.2025 23:00
The Ryazan Oil Refinery in Russia has suspended operations after Ukrainian drone attack late last week.
Reuters reported this with reference to informed sources in the industry, Ukrinform saw.
Sources say an oil storage facility at the refinery went ablaze.
Among the affected equipment is a railway loading ramp and a hydrotreating unit, used to remove impurities from petroleum products.
As the railway loading equipment was damaged, there were no loads on the railway and oil refining was put to a halt, the interlocutors said.
Another source reported that loading has been suspended since Friday, also confirming that the plant had halted operations, being unable to ship produce.
In 2024, the Ryazan Oil Refinery processed 13.1 million metric tons (262,000 barrels per day), or almost 5% of Russia's total refining.

LOL. Vol says that it's not really an organized system, and then you say "THIS" and claim that it's a massive conspiracy funded by lobbyists, MIC, foreign agens, and NGOs.
Why say "THIS" if you're going to directly disagree with everything that he said. And there's no evidence for these claims. It's just a stupid religious belief, like the Q nonsense.
I actually agreed with him but you are not smart enough to pick up on that.
As usual Bill you are pimping for the corrupt pos that were included in my post.. Doesn't surprise me in the least. Your kind support that evil system.
Your philosophy and ideology are over. You are in the minority among the American people. They are sick and tired of the Bush/Cheney, Bill Kristol, John Bolton, Troskeyites like you. You and your type and your neocon foreign policies are disgusting old shitbag dinosaurs from the past that have cost millions of lives and trillions of dollars.
I hope Trump puts you and the John Bolton types out to pasture. You have caused enough damage to this country.
You meet the definition of the enemy within.

If you spend a little time on the Twitter propaganda channel I bet you can find a stooge or bot that says Russia has already taken it.

“Uninterrupted by the public attention that condemned ‘a wasteful’ use of specialist troops, the Air Force leadership — obeying the higher military command's orders — is set to continue sending more of its men to infantry in waves, according to three different servicemen who spoke on the condition of anonymity.
One Air Force officer confirmed that the transfer would continue due to poor mobilization results but said he could not officially reveal the figure due to the topic's sensitivity. Such transfers can have ‘detrimental effects,’ he added, with some specialized troops, for example, providing aviation engineering services, supplying oxygen to aircraft, and replacing batteries…
An Air Force serviceman, who spoke on condition of anonymity fearing repercussions, said this week that about 120 servicemen from his brigade had been transferred to the infantry since January, which included signalmen, machine gunners, radio operators and those working with cryptographic equipment.”

The rumor going around here last week was that the war was over. I guess the reports were wrong.

I just found out today is the 80th Anniversary for Victory Day in WW2. I want to thank President Putin and the Russian people for the great sacrifices they made... around 27 million Russians died to defeat Hitler and the Nazis. If not for them we might have lost the War and alot more American lives. We owe you a great debt Mr. Putin
Imagine any actual American thinking that we owe some great debt to Stalin. Besides the Bernie Bros, of course.
