I read a comment that described Storm Shadow production as “artisanal” which is a fair way to think about it. In that case they’re actually hand crafted to some degree.

The grossly inflated unit costs hide just how bad our industrial situation is. The quality of what we’re producing has also declined and we struggle to field the weapon systems we propose.

10 minutes of hate: Russian propagandists talk about Ukraine

The Ukrainian nationalists hate the Russians, Russia represents an existential threat to their culture and national concept, the Russians could absorb them culturally. The opposite isn’t true though, Russians have a paternalistic attitude towards Ukraine, and if they have a negative attitude it’s that they see them as hayseeds. The war hasn’t changed that.

Kind of like Putin said Russia would have 2400 T14 Armadas by 2024. And as the year wraps up the actual number is (checks notes)....Zero.

Or is that kind of like how we make 10 million FAB chips per day and Russia makes (checks notes)....zero.

Want to do aircraft carriers?

Submarines?

6th Gen Fighter aircraft?

Night vision goggles?

Notice how you never use actual numbers or facts. Just platitudes, like: the west is weak. The dollar is declining. Infrastructure is crumbling.
Ukraine is corrupt, etc

Compared to what? Compared to Russia?

A couple of years ago people were up in arms because a big part of the Red Cross budget goes to PR... commercials and advertising agencies...

and when asked "why?" their blunt response was "doing the job does no good if nobody knows about it. Just helping people does no good if nobody is making videos of it and they're not being run everywhere. We don't get donations just from helping people. So we have to spend a lot of money promoting what we do, and that brings in much more than we would get, otherwise... so more money is there to be spent on field operations, but we have to spend a lot on the PR and advertising." A sad fact of life.

An organization like the Red Cross needing a PR campaign to continue to exist is not the same as a country lashing out like a child at an invader in order to embarrass them vs being calculating and hitting targets that would actually help them on the front. Russia is slowly but steadily advancing now.... what does the present day look like if Ukraine had hit their direct military operations instead of going for PR points? Probably at least a little better.

At the very least I think we can agree that it wasn't the smartest move by a country that doesn't have a lot of runway to make very many dumb ones.

I most certainly know this. But the CIA has been known to play one side against the other based on those historical grievances.

That sums it up very nicely.

Not sure why you're being downvoted. I though almost everyone would agree with your statement, regardless of who they support in Russia v Ukraine.

INTELLIGENCE UPDATE
UPDATE ON UKRAINE
30 December 2024

In late November 2024, Russia passed a law that would allow military personnel who signed up after 01 December 2024 to have their loan debt written off. The write-off would cover loans of up to 10 million rubles (approximately USD $94,400) and would also apply to spouses. This is in addition to the loan repayment holidays for Russian servicemen programme. The independent Russian media organisation Mediazona reports that 411,000 repayment holidays for mortgages and personal loans have been taken up since October 2022.

Russia's financial incentives to military recruits are almost certainly intended to secure sufficient replacements for their steadily increasing casualties, now totalling over 760,000 killed and injured, and averaging 1,523 a day in November 2024. The incentives are also almost certainly intended to reduce the potential for Russia to have to enact further mobilisations, which are seen by Russian leadership as both damaging to public support for the war, and raising the risk of further detrimental large-scale emigration.

Writing off loan repayments will highly likely increase financial pressures on Russian banks into 2025, in addition to pressures from high interest rates and sanctions. This will almost certainly reduce the resilience of the banking sector to respond to a potential economic shock.

Russian Tanker Suspected Involvement in Cable Damage in Gulf of Finland

The Eagle S tanker, linked to Russia’s shadow fleet, is suspected of damaging the Estlink 2 electric cable and four communication cables in the Gulf of Finland on Dec. 25.

by Kyiv Post | December 30, 2024, 11:41 am

Finnish police have discovered a long drag mark at the bottom of the Gulf of Finland, believed to be caused by a vessel hauling an anchor along the seabed, the Yle media outlet reported on Sunday, Dec. 29, citing a police statement.

“The trail extends for tens of kilometers, but it has not yet been determined exactly where the anchor was lowered,” the statement said.

Inspector Sami Paila of the Central Criminal Police suggested the mark was made by the anchor of the Eagle S oil tanker, which is part of Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet.”

According to Paila, underwater research revealed the trail, which stretches almost 100 kilometers to the east before ending where the anchor chain was lifted. The investigation was temporarily paused due to bad weather conditions.

Eagle S is linked to Russia’s shadow fleet, reportedly used to export oil while bypassing Western sanctions. The vessel has previously been reported by Lloyd’s List to have carried surveillance equipment capable of monitoring NATO naval and air forces.

Over 1,300 UAVs and 200 cruise missiles: Kyiv authorities summarises Russian attacks in 2024

Iryna Balachuk — Monday, 30 December 2024, 13:57

During 2024, the Russians fired more than 1,600 times at Kyiv, using attack drones, cruise, ballistic and hypersonic missiles. Air-raid warnings were issued 500 times in the capital.

Source: Kyiv City Military Administration on Telegram

Quote from Serhii Popko, Head of Kyiv City Military Administration: "2024 was a difficult year for Kyiv, as well as for the whole of Ukraine... In 2024, 500 air-raid warnings were issued in Kyiv. During which the Russian armed forces conducted almost 200 air strikes on the capital of Ukraine. In them, Russian troops used more than 1,600 weapons of various types against peaceful Kyiv."

Details: In particular, the Russians launched:

more than 1,300 UAVs;
more than 200 cruise missiles (Kh-101/Kh-59/Kh-69/Iskander-K/Kalibr);
24 ballistic missiles (Iskander-M/KN-23);
22 Kinzhal aeroballistic missiles;
7 Zircon hypersonic missiles.

During the most large-scale attack, 78 weapons were used simultaneously, including 49 Kh-101 missiles and 10 Kinzhal aerial ballistic missiles.

In 2024, the Russians damaged almost 550 residential buildings in Kyiv, leaving almost 120 people homeless.

The number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Kyiv has increased by almost 11,000 over the past year.

"The strikes on energy facilities have forced us to save energy and learn to live without electricity. For almost 100 days last year, Kyiv residents lived under emergency or rolling power outages. The average duration of the power outage for an average resident of the capital was about nine hours a day," Popko said.

6th Gen Fighter aircraft?

This is a good example of our problem

Ok I'm actually glad you brought that up. Let's back up one generation to 5th Gen fighter aircraft. This one should be easy

Russian Su-57. First Flight in 2010
Number built: About 35 (but several of them were just prototypes, and several have crashed. Actual working aircraft, probably 12-15 airframes).

USA F-35 Lightning. First Flight in 2007.
Number built: About 1200
Combat Record: Recently flew to downtown Tehran with impunity. Rather than being challenged by Russian 300 and 400 series AA batteries, it actually detected and destroyed evey single functioning Iranian battery system without them firing a shot.

Psychological warfare is extremely important. We see that in all wars. If it keeps their troops fired up and the home front wildly engaged then it works.
