Wow, I didn't realize that they took Kharkiv like you said that Russia would, MONTHS ago.

They need to do the same thing for Putin.

The US has provided more aid than any other country and it's not even close. Any countries who think we haven't done our part are fools and should be treated as such.
Yes... and ignoring the internal political fight here and the practicality of what could be supplied (what good is giving them F-16s 3 years ago that no pilots could fly? Also using things to strike deep into Russian territory supposedly was approved when it was assessed that Russia had depleted its missile stock so the retaliatory strikes would be a lot less damaging... if that had been done 2 years ago Kyiv would not exist at this point)...
the lag time in approving things and getting them shipped over is just a sad part of military bureaucracy, discounting the holdup on aid from the Freedom Caucus and how that helped Russia greatly.

Korea is directly neighbors with a nuclear armed country that is specifically hostile towards them. I would want nukes too.
A nuclear South Korea gives me pause... because of internal South Korean politics. The left there is very sympathetic to Kim, and feel like Western Capitalism was forced on the country and that North Korea is more "Korean." It is not out of the realm of possibility of a far Left party taking power and pushing for unification, UNDER Kim. Of course, Kim no longer says he wants that, because the minds of the South Korean public have been too infected with Western decadence (which he managed to elude growing up in European boarding schools, somehow)... but really he realizes whatever mindfrick his family has managed to implant in the brains of North Koreans will not work on people who've known a difference, no matter how much they think they might want it.

Interesting thread on how Ukraine used ATACMS and Storm Shadow missiles inefficiently, choosing targets based on what would be embarrassing for Russia vs what would actually help Ukraine the most on the battlefield.
A couple of years ago people were up in arms because a big part of the Red Cross budget goes to PR... commercials and advertising agencies...
and when asked "why?" their blunt response was "doing the job does no good if nobody knows about it. Just helping people does no good if nobody is making videos of it and they're not being run everywhere. We don't get donations just from helping people. So we have to spend a lot of money promoting what we do, and that brings in much more than we would get, otherwise... so more money is there to be spent on field operations, but we have to spend a lot on the PR and advertising." A sad fact of life.
This is a "PR war" in a lot of ways. Russia attacks civilians and civilian infrastructure to terrorize the public in Ukraine into submission. Ukraine got aid after the initial days of the invasion because they had footage of things that embarrassed the Russian military and turned opinion to helping them. Russia spends a lot of lives, equipment and time taking villages (or the rubble that remains of them) of little strategic value just because they released a statement saying they would and it makes them "look good" to do it eventually.
People laugh at "The Ghost of Kyiv" but every war in history has those myths that were energizing propaganda (they just didn't have the means to fact check them... or saw the value in letting them stand).
In short, human beings are not logical creatures that make sense most of the time and that's why a lot of stuff doesn't make sense.

Was the Doolittle Raid is sound military move, or was it done for PR purposes?
Posted on 12/28/24 at 2:39 pm to doubleb
oh, totally PR... it wasn't designed to do much actual damage, just to send a message. And that message was valuable from a military standpoint.

Solovyov recently complained that Russia is full of pink ponies instead of warriors like North Korea.

Vol,
I have been saying the same thing. ukraine troops being slaughtered on the front lines, repeatedly asking for support. And ukraine is wasting assets bombing apartment buildings in Moscow for press releases.
Its quite shameful. And now they have wasted the materials the US has shipped them......and blames the US they dont have enough???????

Have you seen what is left of Karkiv......take what a mountain of rubble.
Its over, you know it, the whole world knows it, sit down with Putin before there is nothing left to discuss.

I would say the non sensical bombing of Russian hinterlands versus the front is less akin to the Doolittle raid and more like hitler in his last days trying to convince little boys they were going to win the war by defending Berlin.

Transnistria was its attempt to keep Moldova from merging with Romania.
Moldova should rejoin Romania, the split doesn’t make sense.
But Transnistria wasn’t planned. General Lebed went rogue and ordered the 14th Army to intervene.

There is an element of spasmodic rage to it - but they’re trying to provoke the Russians into doing something stupid which in turn would push NATO to escalate, up to and including direct military intervention. It’s the only way they can see themselves winning, which is why they’re willing to do crazy things.
They also believe that fighting a tough minded defensive war wouldn’t work, because it would entail territorial losses, which they believe would undermine Western support for the war.

My question is at this point is there anything that could be provided to Ukraine that could reverse the situation. I don't think so. I have seen that $300 billion has been provided so far. Any weapon system that has been provided hasn't made the difference, it has only gotten worse. No one in this thread has an answer of what, if anything, can be done to reverse the outcome. I agree, this is over. Ukraine is screwed.
Putin has stated that their minimum for starting negotiations is:
1. Ukraine has to withdraw from the four oblasts. That means they give up the land in those areas that they still hold. They will have to recognize those four oblasts and Crimea as Russian territory.
2. No NATO and Ukraine has to declare neutrality.
3. No NATO troops/bases in Ukraine
If these are the minimum requirements by the Russians and Zelenskyy is serious as far as negotiations how is he going to sell withdrawing from those areas that he is currently demanding that his troops die to defend? If he is willing to give it up those troops are being killed for nothing. I don't guess he has much of a choice until negotiations are started. Putin has stated that he views Zelensky as illegitimate and he will not negotiate with him. This is going to boil down to Trump. I would imagine many of those Ukrainian soldiers and citizens are ready for negotiations to start.
If Zelensky doesnt.give it up, Putin will just continue until the Ukrainian lines finally break. It's going to boil down to troop numbers and Ukraine will not win that battle. I don't believe Russia will settle for a cease fire, they are going to demand a long-term/permanent settlement. Russia's negotiating position is far stronger now.
Polls from Europe are showing that continued support for the war are dropping. If the Europeans believe that Trump will pull US support they will drop Ukraine like a hot potato because they don't want to foot the bill.

1 million "lads" now gone from being able to be productive Russian citizens. Plus, the million or so who left as to not participate in Putin's dumb war and an economy wrecked for decades.

If Putin believes in God, I bet he gets down on his knees every night and prays that Ukraine surrenders. He can’t take a whole lot more winning like this.

Insufficient numbers and insufficient production capacity, and so not only did we not send enough, our aid was unsustainable, we couldn’t replace losses the way the Ukrainians needed us to, and so once we ran out of something, that was largely it, but it goes beyond that.

If tweet fails to load, click here. The Russian have a larger industrial base than we do, measured in raw output, but they’re also updating and improving their weapon systems in a way that we are not.
We also were just not prepared for Russia’s electronic warfare abilities

Amazing that with all the advantages Russia has in men, weapons, industrial capacity, and brsin power that almost three years later Russia is only slowly gaining territory and has parts of the motherland occupied by the Ukes.
