I kinda think that Syrian updates are relevant until a final, official decision is made on the Russian bases there.

And that explosion was very near the Russian base, even though it was "Syrian ammo" and not "Russian ammo."

I was mostly being facetious because some of the bigger Ukuck sunshine pumpers in this thread (not really you so much) always find something else to talk about when the war isn't going that great for their country.

I don't think there will be a significant impact on the Ukraine war one way or the other based on this outcome though.

It is a hit to Russia in the grand scheme of things globally, but for any benefit to Ukraine that Russia losing those bases provides you could also argue that the resources used to staff, defend, and operate those bases are now freed up to be redirected against Ukraine.

Russia's global prospects are bleak either way for at least the next 5-10 years even if the war ended tomorrow.

Hmmmmmm. Who could have imagined this?

EU imposes sanctions in response to Russian hybrid threats for first time

Oleh Pavliuk — Monday, 16 December 2024, 18:19

On 16 December, the Council of the European Union introduced restrictive measures against 16 individuals and three entities responsible for Russia's destabilising activities abroad.

Source: a statement by the Council of the EU, as reported by European Pravda

Details: The sanctions are the EU’s response to "Russia's malicious actions and its disregard for the rules-based international order and international law".

The sanctions list includes Unit 29155 of the Russian General Staff's Main Directorate of Intelligence (GRU), which has been involved in assassinations and destabilising operations such as explosions and cyberattacks across Europe.

The EU has sanctioned the Pan-African Group for Trade and Investment, a disinformation network conducting pro-Russian covert influence operations in Africa, and its founder, Harouna Douamba.

Sanctions have also been imposed on African Initiative, a news agency which spreads Russian propaganda and disinformation in Africa, its editor-in-chief Artem Kureyev (an employee of Russia's Federal Security Service), and a senior GRU official who assumed control of Wagner Group operations in Africa after Yevgeny Prigozhin's death.

Additionally, as part of its fight against Russia's Doppelganger disinformation campaign, the EU has sanctioned Sofia Zakharova, an official in the Russian presidential administration, and Nikolai Tupikin, head and founder of the state corporation Struktura.

The sanctions also targeted Vladimir Sergiyenko, a former aide to Eugen Schmidt, a Member of the Bundestag for Alternative for Germany (AfD), who actively cooperated with Russian intelligence agents, as well as Russian businessman Viza Mizaev and his business partner and wife, who were implicated in a Russian intelligence operation targeting Germany's Federal Intelligence Service.

Finally, the EU has included Russian official Alesya Miloradovich and Moldovan businessman Anatolii Prizenka, who facilitated the dispatch of several Moldovan citizens to France in October 2023.

The sanctioned individuals will be subject to asset freezes, and EU citizens and companies will be prohibited from making funds available to them. They will also be banned from entering the EU.

Bundestag votes no confidence in Scholz government, elections set for February

by Tim Zadorozhnyy December 16, 2024 7:28 PM

Chancellor Olaf Scholz failed a confidence vote in the Bundestag on Dec. 16, paving the way for early parliamentary elections scheduled for Feb. 23.

The SPD faces criticism for its defense policies, including its refusal to deliver Taurus long-range missiles to Ukraine.

According to a leaked draft of the party's election platform, the SPD remains opposed to the missiles, citing that providing them could escalate Germany’s involvement in Russia's war against Ukraine. Scholz has maintained this stance despite calls from Kyiv and other Western allies.

Friedrich Merz, leader of the opposition Christian Democratic Union (CDU), has voiced support for supplying Taurus missiles to Ukraine.

Merz, whose CDU/CSU alliance is leading in the polls ahead of the February election, visited Kyiv and pledged a more assertive approach to arming Ukraine.

"We want your army to be capable of hitting military bases in Russia. Not civilians, not infrastructure, but military targets from which your country is being attacked," Merz said during his visit, although he cautioned that the missiles would not be a “miraculous” solution to the conflict.

The CDU’s election platform reportedly commits to comprehensive support for Ukraine, including diplomatic, financial, humanitarian, and military aid.

Merz has also argued that Germany could lift restrictions on the Taurus missiles without becoming a direct participant in the war, following precedents set by the U.K. and U.S.

As the elections approach, defense and foreign policy are likely to remain central issues, with the CDU positioning itself as a stronger ally to Ukraine compared to Scholz’s SPD.

With the involvement of North Korea (especially with troops) and Iran...

If the US withdraws the leadership, I actually think this gets a lot hotter... then we're pulled into a hot war

Ukraine uses Tryzub laser weapon capable of shooting down aircraft

Tetyana Oliynyk — Monday, 16 December 2024, 20:31

The Armed Forces of Ukraine have been using the Tryzub, a laser weapon which can shoot down aircraft at altitudes exceeding 2 km.

Source: Interfax-Ukraine, citing Commander of Unmanned Systems Forces Vadym Sukharievskyi

Quote: "We can state that today Ukraine is, if I’m not mistaken, the fifth country that can boast that it has a laser weapon. As of now, we can shoot down aircraft at altitudes exceeding 2 km with this laser."

Details: Sukharievskyi mentioned that the laser system is currently being scaled up and enhanced.

He also highlighted the development of drone motherships, which carry lightweight attack drones.

Quote: "We are now deploying so-called drone motherships, which act as carriers for FPVs, capable of operating at over 70 km deep. They carry two FPVs beneath them, serve as relay systems, and strike enemy targets deep [into Russia]. To me, this is a real breakthrough."

Trump says Russia-Ukraine peace may be harder than Middle East

Trump suggested he might reverse the long-range strike authorization, which allows Ukraine to use the prized Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) against Russian positions.

----------

He demanded a ceasefire on December 8. Nobody listened to him...

Russia is ever weakening... Syria makes them seem weakened... his plan was to force Ukraine to be the one who made all of the concessions, but that won't work without him looking like he's doing Putin's bidding, now.

And who is he explaining this to exactly?

Looks more like the person who said it would be easy…. was the only one who thought it would be easy.

Trump is a wildcard in this situation. His main liaison to Ukraine is a pro-Ukraine hawk and Trump is not one to make a deal from a position of weakness.

Time will tell.

All he can do - and what he has been saying he would do in the past month - is cut military aid to Ukraine... and that would force them to cede land to Putin in negotiations (which is no guarantee Putin would take that deal if he thinks he can just grind away and look better for doing that...).

"I would tell Zelenskyy, no more. You got to make a deal. I would tell Putin, if you don't make a deal, we're going to give him a lot. We're going to [give Ukraine] more than they ever got if we have to. I will have the deal done in one day. One day,"

Ukraine is the side that will lose in Trump's negotiations because it is the side he can more force to do what he wants... and he's a bully at heart who is always much worse on our friends and allies than our enemies, for that reason.

MEET THE PRESS: Trump says Ukraine should ‘probably’ prepare to receive less aid from U.S.

But his excuse preparation was "Russia always wins so Ukraine shouldn't try to beat them." Russia doesn't look like a military that always wins at the moment (and anybody who could remember their retreat from Afghanistan never bought that, anyway).

I think if he reduces or cuts aid it doesn't matter for a while: Biden has rushed things through and they're surging deliveries to get it all there before Trump takes over. Germany and other European countries will step things up. The US has been the "moderating force" as far as keeping Ukraine and Europe restrained in going after Russia... if we're out...

That's Trump carrot or stick offer. I don't think Putin will take the carrot unless he is facing collapse..
