Artillery supplies from partners for Ukraine have increased, Zelensky says
by Martin Fornusek November 4, 2024 2:01 PM
Ukraine has begun receiving increasingly more military assistance from international partners, namely in terms of artillery, President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Nov. 4.
"We are recording an increased supply of defense aid packages. The situation with artillery has improved," Zelensky wrote on Telegram after a meeting of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief's Staff.
The statement comes several days after Zelensky complained that Kyiv had received only close to 10% of military assistance approved by U.S. Congress in April.
The U.S. has recently announced several large-scale aid packages for Ukraine, most recently $425 million worth of ammunition, arms, vehicles, and other support unveiled on Nov. 1.
The Pentagon seeks to ship in defense aid before U.S. President Joe Biden leaves office in January. There are fears that if Republican nominee and ex-President Donald Trump defeats his Democratic challenger, Vice President Kamala Harris, in the Nov. 5 election, Washington might scale down its support for Kyiv.

Only two pilots have achieved ace status in the last 50+ years - Randall Cunningham USN and Steve Ritchie USAF, both in Vietnam.

ace
Wrong again. The term "Ace" is used to describe fighter pilots who have shot down 5 enemy aircraft. A double as is 10 kills. Not strafing, not bombing, but shot down in combat. The last two were Cunningham and Driscol, in that order, in 1972. Cunningham was flying the F-4J "Showtime 100" and Driscol was in a F-4D.
There were only two pilots in Vietnam to achieve that status. None since. Not even close.

He's correct about training very young pilots. When Poland converted to F-16's from Soviet aircraft, it's top pilots couldn't pass training. The issue was the planes are designed for different tactics. The pilots with a long history using Soviet tactics always reverted to those tactics and easy to shoot down.

You're right. I guess whoever put that video together was taking too much liberty with words. He does have one hell of a lot of successful combat experience.

WSJ: Russia Planned to Attack Civilian Aircraft
Russians attempted terrorist attacks on civilian aircraft using small incendiary devices sent via DHL.
This information comes from Western intelligence agencies, as reported by The WSJ.
It is reported that the terrorist attack was supposed to result in fires on airplanes en route to the United States and Canada.
In July, fires broke out in the logistics centers of the DHL postal company in Germany and the United Kingdom because of special devices in parcels.
Investigative and intelligence agencies in Europe have found that the magnesium-based flammable devices were built into the electric massagers.
The Wall Street Journal, citing European experts familiar with the investigation, writes that the devices were part of a broader Russian operation.
The electric massagers sent to the UK from Lithuania appear to have been an attempt to figure out how to bring such incendiary devices aboard planes bound for North America.
Detention in Poland
Recently, the Polish National Prosecutor’s Office reported that it had arrested four people in connection with the fires and charged them with participating in sabotage or terrorist operations on behalf of foreign intelligence. Poland is cooperating with other countries to find at least two more suspects.
The Head of Poland’s foreign intelligence service, Pawel Szota, added that Russian spies were to blame, and such an attack, if carried out, would be a serious escalation in Moscow’s campaign against the West.

ISW Update Nov 4
quote:
Key Takeaways:
Russian and pro-Kremlin actors launched an information operation on November 4 to discredit incumbent Moldovan President Maia Sandu’s victory in the Moldovan presidential elections.
Georgian civil society and opposition resumed peaceful demonstrations on November 4 against the highly contested October 26 Georgian parliamentary elections, calling for continued resistance and further investigations into large-scale voting irregularities.
Radio Free Europe/ Radio Liberty's (RFE/RL) Sistema project released an investigation on November 4 detailing Russia's initial 2022 demands for Ukraine's total capitulation, further supporting ISW's long-standing assessment that Russia has never been willing to engage in good-faith negotiations with Ukraine on any terms but its own.
Russian drone and missile strikes against Ukrainian energy infrastructure in Summer 2024 reportedly significantly impacted Ukrainian electrical generation capacity compared to March 2024, though it is unclear whether Russia had been able to inflict significant further damage on the Ukrainian energy grid since.
The Kremlin-awarded founder and director of the prominent Rybar Telegram channel and social media project attempted to falsely portray himself as a non-Kremlin actor in the Western media and confirmed the Kremlin’s efforts to establish “media schools” abroad.
Russian authorities arrested Rosgvardia's Deputy Head of Logistics Major General Mirza Mirzaev for bribery on November 3.
Russian forces advanced near Novy Put, Kursk Oblast.
Ukrainian forces advanced in Kharkiv Oblast and Russian forces advanced in the Kupyansk, Kreminna, Pokrovsk, Kurakhove, and Vuhledar directions.
The Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD) continues attempts to form a cadre of loyal military journalists in an effort to control the pro-war Russian information space and centralize control over Russia’s war coverage.

UPDATE ON UKRAINE
05 November 2024
INTELLIGENCE UPDATE
In southern Donetsk oblast, Russian forces have made advances in several areas along a 20km wide front. Russian forces have seized control of several small towns and advanced up to 9km in some areas within the space of a week. These advances follow from Russia gaining control of Vuhledar at the beginning of October 2024.
Also in southern Donetsk oblast, Russian forces seized the town of Hirnyk and claim to have captured Kurakhivka. 15km southeast of Pokrvosk, Russia seized Selydove, which likely further sets conditions for Russia to threaten the logistics hub of Pokrovsk.
Russia continues to prioritise the southern Donetsk frontlines maintaining favourable force ratios in this sector, which partly explains the increased pace of Russian advances. Despite heavy personnel losses, Russia continues to recruit in high numbers to sustain its operations in southern Ukraine.
