Seems like some very hard to replace specialists being put into a meat grinder.

Another EO could have reversed Obama's EO. Instead, any not sent ot Ukraine we are paying to have destroyed

We should send them all to Ukraine.

The US should not use them, though. The US will never be in this type of trench warfare or whatever again. I doubt if any NATO country ever will be, again...

We used them in Iraq and Afghanistan. Russia uses them. Turkey uses them. Other nations use them, just not Europeans.

Cheaper to send them to Ukraine then back to OEM for destruction.

frick that. They work, and they're not just for trench warfare.

The only reason to phase them out is for something more effective, or cost effective-- otherwise, keep pumping them out.

It was a UN led treaty which failed in the Senate due no GOP support, only Democrats supported it. Several other nations refused to sign the treaty as well. That is when Obama issued the EO.

Lithuania has seen the light. Which means that none of the European countries that border Russia or Ukraine have agreed to the Convention on Cluster Munitions. I know Estonia, Finland and Poland have stockpiles.

One of the comments in that thread contained one of my favorite words: zugzwang. It describes a situation where every move you may make worsens your position and chances of victory. Normally it is used to describe a situation in chess.

Even if you don't know what it means it is fun to say.

As noted they are not just for trench warfare, in fact, that is not even their forte'. The issue with any weapon that uses bomblets is UXOs (unexploded ordinance). I will leave it to wiser folk to argue that cost-benefit analysis.

Oil depot on fire for almost four days in Russia's Rostov Oblast, satellite images released
Tetyana Oliynyk — Wednesday, 21 August 2024, 22:12

Radio Liberty journalists have published satellite images of the fire at the Rosrezerv oil depot in Rostov Oblast, Russia, which has been ongoing for more than three days.

Source: Russian service of Radio Liberty; OSINT analyst under the nickname MT_Anderson

Details: The OSINT analyst estimates that the blaze had completely destroyed 14 fuel tanks, while 4 more were partially destroyed and 16 were not damaged. He does not provide any information concerning the state of the rest of the 44 fuel tanks, as they are covered with a dense layer of smoke.

Yes, incredibly stupid... but that's what they're resorting to...

There is a report of a major fragging incident among the Russians. If so, I'm surprised it took this long.

Yea I have seen several posts about a Russian soldier who fragged his commanders and then defected to Ukraine. Who knows if it's real.

There seems to be an increase in doom posting by various Russians regarding the situation in Kursk.

This is one such post.

Large drone attack on another Russian airfield -- this one at Marinovka. There are a number of videos of secondary explosions and stuff burning. At this point, it's unknown whether only ammo storage was hit, or whether aircraft were also destroyed, but satellite photos from the 19th show 14x Su-24 and 15x Su-34 on the base. There were also some unusual trucks that some people think are involved with launching Shaheds.

ISW Update Aug 21st

quote:

Key Takeaways:

The Kremlin appears to have launched an intricate messaging campaign aimed at justifying to its domestic audience why Russia is prioritizing maintaining the initiative in eastern Ukraine over immediately expelling Ukrainian forces from Kursk Oblast.

Putin notably appears to be demanding that Russia defeat Ukraine’s incursion into Kursk Oblast without sacrificing the stability of his regime, deprioritizing the offensive in eastern Ukraine, or firing his incompetent but loyal lieutenants. The results of such a strategy are too early to forecast.

Ukrainian forces continued offensive operations throughout the Kursk Oblast salient on August 21 and have made additional marginal advances.

Russian President Vladimir Putin visited the Republic of Chechnya for the first time in 13 years on August 20, likely in an effort to shift domestic focus away from the Ukrainian incursion into Kursk Oblast and posture normalcy and stability.

Recent US intelligence assessments highlight Ukraine's efforts to develop alternative and asymmetric capabilities in the face of Russian manpower and materiel advantages, as well as Ukraine's continued dependence on Western security assistance.

Ukraine continues efforts to attrit Russia's air defense and aviation capabilities.

Russian authorities may have attempted to block Telegram and other non-Russian internet communications services on August 21.

The Russian government is reportedly supporting a bill that would allow Russian authorities to draw up administrative protocols against Russian citizens who violate Russian law while living abroad.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and People's Republic of China (PRC) Premier Li Qiang discussed deepening bilateral economic and trade relations in Moscow on August 21.

Russian forces recently advanced southeast of Pokrovsk, southwest of Donetsk City, and northeast of Robotyne.

Russian occupation authorities continue to create Cossack organizations in occupied Ukraine, likely to build out Russia's military reserves and law enforcement bodies in occupied Ukraine.

It's been obvious for over a week that the entire Gluskovsky region south of the Seim River will eventually be controlled by Ukraine.

The news of more importance this morning is that Ukraine is verified to have taken additional territory to the north and to the east, expanding the salient.

To me, the biggest question is whether Ukraine can actually take Korenevo. They continue to gain firm control over more of the surrounding area, but Russia continues to reinforce its positions.

I thought that they would take the town several days ago, and I was wrong.
