Trump mentioned the amount of money the US sends to NATO as being problematic multiple times on his X chat with Elon Musk last night, and I believe mentioned Ukraine money in the same light but the whole thing was pretty boring and I zoned out a bit
At least if I was going to be bored at a Kamala rally I'd be paid to be there

Think they meant Russia no longer controlled it. Not that it was destroyed.
Meant that it was destroyed. The pipelines go through Ukraine, with compressor stations so Ukraine could do that whenever it wanted since Feb 2022

The other big battle now is at the northwest of the salient. I do not expect a quick Ukrainian victory here, but it would collapse the area to the south and open the road to Rylask.

I found one reference that Gazprom had stopped shipping via this pipeline in early 2022. Once again traders are a fickle lot going on rumor and whims. Seems to be affecting price at the TTF hub to be bumped higher today.

It’s sad that Russia’s only chance of defeating a corrupt and weak country that is not a real country is if America stops supporting it.

Its actually pretty great for the world that Russia is that weak

At the beginning of this debacle China made a grocery list of things it wants in Siberia.
After the developments this week, China just updated its list

Ukraine's incursion brings Russia closer to new mobilization, Bloomberg says
by Kateryna Hodunova and The Kyiv Independent news desk August 13, 2024 5:42 PM
The Russian army is not receiving enough new soldiers to keep up with losses at the front, which are the heaviest since the start of the full-scale invasion in 2022, Bloomberg reported on Aug. 13, citing undisclosed sources "close to the Kremlin and Russian Defense Ministry."
The need to replenish the military reserve became more acute amid Ukraine's incursion in the border areas of Russia's Kursk and Belgorod oblasts.
The situation may force Russia to consider a new mobilization, Bloomberg reported, citing two sources who spoke on the condition of anonymity.
Officials may present it as a rotation to give the military on the front line a rest, and the draft could be announced by the end of this year, according to the sources.
Regional officials are currently unable to meet more a third of their conscription quotas on average, a person familiar with the situation told the media outlet.
The pressure to fill recruitment quotas is so intense that rich regions are luring people from poorer regions to sign contracts with them so they can claim more significant bonuses, one of the sources said.
The military's demand for men has also led to an accelerating wage race with businesses as the labor shortage in the Russian economy worsens.

So do they crash the economy by taking even more labor out of the work force, or do they start drafting the sons of the Moscow/St Petersburg elites? Either one is an unpalatable option for Putin.

They can continue to hire desperate people from India, Africa and elsewhere for sundry jobs and then send them to the front.

Ukraine plans to hire retired foreign pilots to fly Western fighter jets and fight against Russia.
American politician Lindsey Graham stated this after a meeting with President Volodymyr Zelensky.
The government will look for retired pilots from NATO countries to fly the transferred F-16s until Ukrainian pilots complete their training.

Key graf from today's new FT article: LINK
The general sense is that Russia is finally getting some significant troops in the area that can at least slow down the Ukrainian advances.
My fear remains that Ukraine is going to fall short of taking territory that it can defend for the long term.

Ukraine’s commander-in-chief Oleksandr Syrsky on Tuesday evening said his country’s troops had advanced by up to 3km in different directions in Kursk region, taking another 40 sq km and that they were holding 74 settlements.

Tiny bang for a line that is full of natural gas being pushed from the compressor station deeper in Russia. Such a fire would be seen for days.
Nonsense. My company builds hundreds of compressor stations. The departing pipeline has check valves that prevent backflow feeding the fire, and the incoming pipeline has shutdown valves that would close immediately preventing flow from the incoming pipeline. No fuel equals no fire.
I did not see any explosions that would have affected SDVs or FSVs.

Even trying to hold it seems like a gaffe unless there are more moves to come that we don't know about yet, which is possible. Even if Ukraine struck and then completely withdrew that sends a strong message.

Dig in and let Russia use up its best assault troops trying to take it all back this winter.
With the shape of the salient, they could build an ever smaller, tighter series of defensive trenches with good internal lines of support.
It might buy them another 6 months. Until they can figure out another way to buy themselves another 6 months.
Russia can't keep this up forever.
