Tariffs aren’t the same as sanctions, but they are designed to separate us from them.

It’s not all that simple.

I guess that everyone forgets that he offered to decrease sanctions against North Korea if they reached a deal. Even after two summits and a photo op at the DMZ they were never able to reach a deal. The sanctions stayed in place but Trump got Lil Kim to the negotiating table. Trump understands that you have to offer Russia a carrot to get them to negotiate because Biden’s stick only approach ain’t working.

Most of this bunch are so confused right now. One day they put their Biden signs out and then the next they hide them away.

I've gone down some rabbit holes on this issue. And there is no consensus on exactly what happened. But there is a narrative that goes something like this:

The deal was essentially in place. But the NK interpreter either misunderstood or misinterpreted something Trump said. And Kim got the impression that Trump was changing the deal. Or didn't agree with the deal. Or something along those lines.

Later, they played back the exchange for Kim with a different set of interpreters who realized they basically let a deal get away.

Kim promptly executed his interpreter.

Or something like that.

Campaign season folks

So now its campaign season? It wasn't campaign season during the debate? Or its only campaign season when you dislike what he says?

I agree that we shouldn't read into his comments too much. Its just rich coming from you.

Its not a coincidence that most of the ardent Ukraine lovers are either outright lefties or Bush family worshipping Republicans.

What Trump said in the debate is consistent with what he has been saying for the past 18 months or so. Not liking sanctions is not only inconsistent with what Trump has been saying far the past 18 months or so but also what he did during his 4 years as POTUS. So which position is more likely to be his real position and which one is more likely to be campaign BS?

I am far from a leftist and I would pay damn good money to punch GWB in the face.

I can only count 3 who are anti-Trump. I for one was agnostic on Ukraine pre Feb 22, I do like underdogs and also know that you can never trust Russia, not ever, not in business and not in geopolitics, unless you are have the deck stacked against them with no option available for Russia. 2014 killed a potential business deal for me in Russia with Ukrainian investors.

The supposed right-wingers on here must think it's hard to be both pro-Trump and anti-Communist dictator.

There has been reporting for a while that he will push Ukraine to give up territory. I would be shocked if he were on board with Ukraine joining NATO since us leaving NATO is at least on the table under a new Trump admin (though unlikely).

WaPo from April, Trump will push Ukraine to hand over Crimea and the border regions. LINK

So what exactly does Russia want that is unacceptable to Trump if he is telling the truth? The sticking points are likely total demilitarization and the government being ousted. I don't think either of those things are hardline expectations Russia HAS to come away with.

There’s gonna be a DMZ in Eastern Europe. That’s what’s gonna happen. We all talk about how a pause in the war would be good for Russia, and bad for Ukraine, because it’ll give Russia time to remilitarize, but it would give Ukraine time to remilitarize too, and a chance to regather themselves. Russia can play the war of attrition right now. Ukraine can’t. Ukraine needs a blitzkrieg type of offensive to beat Russia, and that won’t happen if they don’t get a break from the war that has been ongoing since February of 2022.

Of course I only support a pause, if the West and US in particular, are willing to keep arming and training the Ukrainian military. I think Ukraine needs the pause. I wouldn’t have said this a few weeks ago, but I think it’s the best option for Ukraine now, especially if they have any hopes of recapturing what was stolen from them.

What I don’t understand are the pro Russian guys here. They say they are what? Against everything the US does, right? For everything Putin does, right?

Trump was president. Russia had occupied Crimes and was active in the Donbas. He increased military aid to Ukraine. He never tried to mediate the war there and give Russia Ukrainian land so why would he now?

I don’t believe the Russians will accept any deal that doesn’t permanently resolve the conflict. They don’t want to fight this war again at a later date.

Thats probably one of the reasons they’re insisting that sanctions be lifted as part of any settlement.

Surely you’re not acting like the current conflict is on the same scale as what was going on during the Trump admin

He also never actively tried to get Russia to leave Crimea. Why would he now?

I've been curious about this for quite some time. I'm glad someone in here has some intimate knowledge of this process.

Please explain how the money is laundered? What mechanisms are used?
