8 Dead, 29 Injured in Russian Overnight Attacks on Dnipropetrovsk Region

Russian missile attacks on Ukraine’s Dnipropetrovsk region early morning Friday, April 19 killed at least eight people, including three children.

Ukraine's State Emergency Service reported that another 29 people were injured.

The Russians attacked Ukraine overnight with 22 missiles of various types and 14 kamikaze drones, Ukrainian Air Force stated. The Air Force said that it shot down 29 of its 36 targets.

“Unfortunately, there are also hits,” Dnipropetrovsk Governor Serhii Lysak stated in a Telegram post at 7:39 a.m.

ISW April 18th Update

quote:

Key Takeaways:

Ukrainian Main Military Intelligence Directorate (GUR) Head Lieutenant General Kyrylo Budanov specified that the Russian offensive effort that Ukrainian officials have been forecasting will likely begin in June 2024.

Budanov also stated on April 17 that Ukraine plans to counter future Russian offensive operations by continuing strikes against Russian military targets within Russia.

Russian forces reportedly continue to intensify crypto-mobilization efforts ahead of the expected Russian summer 2024 offensive operation but will likely struggle to establish effective operational- and strategic-level reserves rapidly.

Ukrainian officials clarified that the Ukrainian strike on a Russian military airfield in occupied Dzhankoi, Crimea overnight on April 16 to 17 caused significant damage to Russian air defense equipment.

Russian milbloggers seized on a violent crime committed by a migrant in Moscow on April 18 to reiterate calls for further restrictions in Russian migration policies.

German authorities detained two individuals suspected of aiding Russia in its ongoing efforts to sabotage NATO member states’ military infrastructure and logistics.

Russian forces recently made confirmed advances near Avdiivka and Donetsk City.

Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty’s (RFE/RL) “Schemes” investigative project, citing Ukrainian intelligence, reported on April 17 that Russia’s defense industry is using US- and Japanese-made components in the navigation and communication systems of Russian Sukhoi fixed wing aircraft.

These buildings are all so ugly that Russia is doing them a favour. They'll be rebuilt in Western style with our taxpayer dollars (supported by many of the lads in this thread).

Kyiv Achieves First Destruction of Russian Strategic Bomber Using S-200 System

Kyiv Post sources in military intelligence confirm that it destroyed a Russian TU-22M3 bomber using an S-200 air defense missile, the first successful destruction of a strategic bomber in the air.

On Friday, April 19, the Ukrainian Forces shot down a Russian long-range strategic bomber, the TU-22M3 (NATO: Backfire), for the first time. Kyiv Post sources confirm that it was an operation planned and executed by the Main Intelligence Directorate of Ukraine (HUR).

The source said that an S-200 air defense system had been used to shoot down the Russian plane at about 300 kilometers (185 miles) from Ukraine.

According to the HUR, it used the same type of missile to bring down the Tu-22M3 aircraft, as they had to previously bring down a Russian A-50 long-range radar and control aircraft. Despite the damage received, the bomber attempted to return to its base before crashing in the Stavropol area.

“It should be noted that this is the first successful destruction of a strategic bomber in the air during a combat mission during Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine”, the HUR said.

Earlier, regional governor Vadim Shumkov said that the right-bank part of the city, where several neighborhoods and dachas are located, is either waterlogged or flooded.

The river in the city, which is the administrative centre of the broader Kurgan region straddling the Tobol River near the border with Kazakhstan, rose by 123 cms (four feet) in the 24 hours to Wednesday morning, reaching 865 cms (28 feet), RIA reported

The post-WW2 Soviets did not care much about looks. Which is a shame because Russian architecture under the Czars and the Soviets prior to the 1950s was beautiful.

The House Rules Committee has voted 9-3 [a 'Not Voting' registered by that tower of jello Rep. Houchin] to advance a package of bills providing aid to Israel, Ukraine and other allies...

This vote is significant as it is the first real action from the House GOP on these issues after months of talk. Certainly some shape-shifting has taken place among the pro-Putin GOP Representatives in the last two weeks. This is probably due to the realization that their constant talking points against all aid for Ukraine align perfectly with Russian propagada and this fact is now being illuminated by the US media.

Not a good look.

By the way, if you want to see our tax dollars at work, check this list of proposed amendments to this package. Pay particular attention to those inflicted by Rep. Greene from Waste of Oxygen, Georgia:

Requires all Members of Congress who vote in favor of this Act to conscript in the Ukrainian Military.

Prohibits funding until Ukraine closes all bio-laboratories.

Reduces every dollar amount in the bill to zero.

Redirects funding to families of individuals who die from fentanyl.

Prohibits funding for the Azov Battalion.

Prohibits funding until Ukraine turns over all information related to Hunter Biden and Burisma.

Funds made available by this Act shall be offset by the salaries of Members who vote in favor of it. [My favorite and actually gets my support...]

Prohibits funding until former actor Volodymyr Zelensky resigns as President of Ukraine.

Requires any country that receives U.S. financial aid to provide the U.S. with funds to build a wall on the southern border.

Prohibits funding until Ukraine lifts restrictions on the right of ethnic minorities, including Hungarians, to use their native languages in schools. [I wonder where she got this idea...?]

Great way to start the weekend.

I wonder if these were old ones that Ukraine restored or some of the Soviet era SAMs Poland said it would give Ukraine last week?

The HOR bill will pass eventually. The anti-Ukraine republicans and retards like MTG will spend the time between now and the vote grandstanding.

Why has Russia always wanted the territory of Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Eastern Poland? Or Finland, for that matter... Why did it keep Kaliningrad (which Poland wants back)?

Königsberg was German

Or Finland, for that matter...

The Russians took Finland from Sweden and then gave the Fins defacto independence as the Grand Duchy. Finland would have gained full independence, like Poland, had the Romanov’s retained power.

Because of the geography, but by the end of the Soviet period, there was no strong desire to hold onto them. The leadership in Moscow didn’t see the point.

We’re squandering our wealth in Ukraine, we’re making Russia stronger, not weaker, and we’ve created, despite everything, a Chinese Russian alliance, which is a historical improbability, and would otherwise have been unthinkable.

None of this benefits us.

Our foreign policy has been hijacked by pressure groups and no longer serves any kind of American interest.

The Russian economy is declining. Their military has big losses. Over 50,00 Russians have died. Russia is not stronger.

Unthinkable? They were allied against us in Korea and Vietnam. And actually China has not been rushing to help Russia except when they can take advantage of the situation and make money.

The Biden administration is poorly led and had been reacting to outside forces which they can’t control. Putin put them to the test in Ukraine and Iran has been jacking them around all over the Middle East. Pressure groups have been trying to steer Biden in their favor because he has no plan and he’s such a weak leader.

Republican Reps. Chip Roy, Thomas Massie and Ralph Norman voted against the rule, out of anger that assistance to Ukraine was not paired with conservative border security provisions, as House Speaker Mike Johnson had previously pushed to do.

That was very weak leverage which is why it didn't move the needle at all and just got more Ukrainians killed in the process.

Tie the US border to the next continuing resolution and shutdown the non-essentials parts of government until the border is closed. That would move the needle.
