One of my NROTC professors at the Citadel was a ASW officer on an S3 Viking. He had stories.

Just as a little factoid, Russia has 11 Boomers. We have 51 fast attack subs. If you don't think we're shadowing every single Russian boomer with at least 1, you'd be mistaken...

Gotta say Turkey has been putting in work.
They've given drones and apparently stopped a Russian frigate loaded with cruise missiles in the Black Sea.

How many of those are at see at anyone time? Maybe a 3rd of them?
How many of those that are at sea are busy in the pacific tracking Chinese subs?

Do we have any idea where he was in command in Ukraine?
This article claims that units of the 41st combined arms army built up in Yelnya:
EuroNews
quote:
Units of the Russian 41st army have remained in Yelnya, a town 260 kilometres north of the Ukrainian border, according to the ministry.
Yelnya is closest to the city of Cherniv. So from that info I would assume he was either killed fighting in Cherniv or on the outskirts of Kyiv somewhere. Cherniv is not very far northeast of Kiyv and has seen very heavy fighting.
I suppose it is possible that his units moved south to Kharkiv, but that's pretty far off from where they staged.

I've also seen reports he commanded the 7th Airborne Division. IDK if he could be both at the same time in the Russian system.
Pence's former national society advisor on Fox just now said when the pictures of massive Russian bombardment of cities start coming out it will be hard for us not to get involved. Two things he mentioned are a no fly zone and American volunteer pilots a la the Flying Tigers in WWII.

Just a casual observation, but we've been paying a lot of attention to an area in the Gulf about 100 miles WSW of Tampa today. There were a couple of ASW planes (p8's and a E-6) orbiting out there. Russian Boomers
they are always out there (the soviets), its all a cat and mouse game

Are we back to calling them Soviets now?

I think a very generous estimation would be 4-5. But I really have no clue

Today's negotiations concluded. Both sides agreed to keep humanitarian corridors open for civilian evacuation. Some progress in other areas, per Ukraine delegate.

This tells me that the invasion is going much much worse than the Russians expected.

There’s really nothing you can take from that. I doubt either party is negotiating in good faith.

We have about 1/3 of our fast attacks on deployment at any given time. Another third in shipyard or upkeep availabilities and the other third are in pre-deployment work ups or training. That final third can usually be mobilized to go to sea rather quickly.
Our allied navies (specifically the Japanese) greatly assist in our ASW capabilities in the Pacific. This doesn’t even account for our surface and air ASW platforms as well as SURTASS capable ships.
-former fast attack sub guy.

Does the retirement of the S-3 Viking give cause for concern or do we have enough long range ASW aircraft like the P-8 to cover that loss?
Posted on 3/3/22 at 2:10 pm to GeauxxxTigers23
I’ve been out for a while, but tbh the Vikings didn’t contribute much
The only true way to track is passively with another sub and then sending that info to the surface/air wing and they can have their limited fun.
