Sorry, this is also not directly about the conflict, but just unreal:

Politico:

quote:

“The Pentagon did not inform senior officials in the White House’s National Security Council of Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin’s hospitalization until Thursday — three full days after he arrived at Walter Reed Medical Center”

Austin was in the ICU for part of that time. His top deputy was on vacation in Puerto Rico.

I'm sorry, but for Congress and the NSC and the White House to not be informed? Inexcusable. People in the DoD have to get fired.

Several assumptions built into that number (all 4M shells are good and 2M annual production is met), but Russia definitely has a strong upper hand on the artillery quantity aspect for the foreseeable future. Especially given that the US won't even hit 1.2M annual production until 2026

One mitigating factor is that the Russians are using rather old Soviet era howitzers for the most part with shorter range and poor accuracy. Their counter battery fire is poor.

US warns of limited supply of Patriot missiles to Ukraine — NYT
January 6, 2024, 10:35 AM

But the White House and Pentagon officials have warned that the United States will soon be unable to keep Ukraine’s Patriot batteries supplied with interceptor missiles, due to their high cost, the NYT said.

Key Takeaways:

Ukrainian forces are conducting a multi-day strike campaign against Russian military targets in occupied Crimea and have successfully struck several targets throughout the peninsula.

A Russian milblogger argued that Russian forces need to improve planning and coordination at the tactical and operational levels so that Russian offensive operations can break out of the current positional warfare in Ukraine.

Western provision of air defense systems and missiles to Ukraine in the near- and medium-term remain crucial for Ukraine’s development of a defense industrial base (DIB) that can sustain Ukraine’s war effort against Russia in the long-term.

The Danish Ministry of Defense (MoD) announced on January 6 that it is delaying its first delivery of six F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine for up to six months.

Russian and Ukrainian forces continued positional engagements along the entire line of contact on January 6.

The Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD) continues efforts to incentivize service with the Russian military by advertising support for housing.

Russian occupation authorities are struggling to provide basic services to residents of occupied areas of Ukraine.

The Ukrainian Resistance Center reported on January 6 that Russian occupation authorities in Berdyansk have failed to restore civil infrastructure, causing issues with the water supply that are causing the humanitarian situation to deteriorate.[41] Ukrainian Luhansk Oblast Head Artem Lysohor stated on January 6 that an accident at the water pump in occupied Uspenka, Luhansk Oblast, disrupted the water supply, but that there were no local emergency crews able to fix the pipe, so an emergency crew had to travel over 1,200km to Uspenka from Ulyanovsk, Russia, forcing locals to wait a considerable time for potable water

UPDATE ON UKRAINE
07 January 2024

Rosgvardia, the Russian National Guard, is bolstering its resources and personnel as a result of upheavals in Russia's internal security scene from the war in Ukraine.

Elements of private military company Wagner Group came under Rosgvardia from October 2023, followed on 3 January 2024 by the Donetsk People's Republic's (DNR) "Vostok" Battalion. Moscow has also been advancing its efforts to dissolve the DNR's "Kaskad" group, which specialises in drone operations, and subordinate parts of it to Rosgvardia.

In July 2023, the Russian State Duma authorised Rosgvardiya to employ heavier weaponry. New capabilities, along with its augmentation with experienced veterans from other groups, will likely represent a significant increase in combat effectiveness.

Patriot is not being used to take down drones, but instead missiles, including the "undefeatable" "hypersonic" (all ballistic missiles become hypersonic upon reentry) Kinzhal. It's original mission, decades ago, was aircraft.

That’s Joe Biden’s fearless administration. When your POTUS needs to be led around and handled like a mental patient and has spent 1/3 of his presidency on vacation this is the utter shitshow you get.

If you are rooting for more of that, then may God have mercy on your soul.

So you’re in country and witnessed this? No, you only know what you heard and assume it’s true-which it could be, but YOU have no idea if this is true.

There’s got to be accountability in the oval too. How do you not know and investigate where tf you Sec Def is right now with everything going on?

Entire admin is a joke and none of this is helpful to the present geopolitical climate. This just emboldens the wrong people/nations.

Russian President Vladimir Putin continued to court Russian servicemen and their families ahead of the March 2024 presidential election during a meeting with family members of deceased Russian servicemen on January 6.

Head of the Kremlin-controlled Russian Orthodox Church Patriarch Kirill of Moscow stated that Russia cannot reject Russian citizens who “understand they made a mistake” by fleeing Russia after the full-scale invasion of Ukraine and now want to return home.

Two Russian government officials defended migrants’ continued presence in Russia amid ongoing migrant crackdowns, generating heavy milblogger criticism and indicating that the Russian government likely still lacks a unified policy toward migrants in Russia.

Russian forces conducted a series of missile and drone strikes against Ukraine on the night of January 6 to 7.

Ukrainian Air Force Spokesperson Colonel Yuriy Ihnat refuted media reports that the Danish Ministry of Defense (MoD) is delaying its first delivery of six F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine for up to six months.

Russian forces made confirmed advances west and southwest of Donetsk City amid continued positional engagements along the front.

Ukrainian military observer Kostyantyn Mashovets stated on January 7 that Russia has pushed back the deadline for the establishment of the new Moscow and Leningrad Military Districts (MMD and LMD) for at least the second time due to weapons and personnel shortages and bureaucratic issues.

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree on January 4 that will allow Russia to forcibly grant citizenship to deported Ukrainian children.

INTELLIGENCE UPDATE
UPDATE ON UKRAINE 08 January 2024

In late 2023, Russian politicians claimed that the Soviet counter-intelligence (CI) organisation 'SMERSH' was being re-established. In early January 2024, an open-source image showed operatives apparently wearing SMERSH uniform patches.

An abbreviation of the Russian phrase for 'death to spies', Joseph Stalin established the original organisation which existed from 1941-1946. In the West, it became known via its fictionalised portrayal in lan Fleming's James Bond books.

It is unclear whether the new name indicates any substantive new capabilities or role for Russia's Cl function, or whether it is merely a re-badging. However, it provides another example of how the Russian authorities consciously couch the Russia-Ukraine conflict in the spirit of the Second World War, and their strong focus on the supposed infiltration of external threats into the country.

THE chief editor of one of Vladimir Putin's propaganda TV channels has been found dead from a suspected poisoning, it has been claimed. Zoya Konovalova, 48, who ran a channel operating near the frontlines of Mad Vlad's illegal war, was found alongside her ex-husband.

The Kuban editor was found in her bedroom and her 52-year-old former husband Andrey Gubatiyka's corpse was found close by. “No visible injuries were found during the examination of the bodies,” said a spokesman for the Russian Investigative Committee, which is probing the deaths. The former couple shared a daughter, 15, and an adult son.

“The preliminary cause of death is poisoning by an unknown substance,” said a report by her own channel. A fragment of a plastic bag with a "powdery substance" was reportedly found in the TV chief’s private house in Krasnodar city. But her colleagues and friends insisted today she would never have taken drugs.

The Kuban media outlet is part of the state-run giant All-Russia State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company [VGTRK], a key prop in Putin’s propaganda empire.

Ukrainian Mig-29 pilot Vladyslav Zalistovskyi, call sign “Blue Helmet”, was killed on a combat sortie on the evening of Jan 5th. Still just a kid at 23 and had already 100 combat sorties flown before his death. Aircraft can be replaced, trained pilots is a completely different issue. It was shocking to me that the kid was just 23 years old and had already been flying in combat for 2 years. At that age I had recently graduated college and got my commission but still hadn’t even achieved rated officer status or even known what aircraft i would be selected to fly and this kid has been getting his arse shot off for 2 years. Maybe doesn’t seem like a big deal to some but knowing all the work it takes just to be an operational pilot blows my mind how they have guys so young with so much combat experience in the air already. Losing 1 Ukrainian pilot is the equivalent of the VKS losing 7-10 of their pilots.

Russian Missile Strikes Defeat Ukrainian Air Defenses, Kyiv Notes Shortage of US Patriot Systems

High-tech Russian long-range strike weapons had a field day with all ballistic missiles and about half of all cruise missiles fired by the Kremlin on Monday penetrating Ukrainian air defenses.
by Stefan Korshak | January 8, 2024, 2:58 pm

Ukrainian air defenders had one of their worst days of the entire war on Monday, intercepting less than half of the kamikaze drones, ballistic and cruise missiles launched by Russian armed forces in massed morning strikes against military and civilian targets.

An Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) statement said combat units firing from defense locations across the country shot down 18 cruise missiles and 8 kamikaze drones during Russian attacks timed to hit during start-of-the-work-week rush hour.

The Russian military used strike jets, strategic bombers and multiple ground platforms to launch a total of 59 aerial munitions at Ukraine from 7:00-8:00 a.m., official statements said.

According to AFU data made public later in the day, Ukrainian air defenses on Monday managed to hit 40 percent of incoming missiles and drones.
