in 2003 Russia made their first attempt after the collapse of the USSR to grab a piece of Ukrainian soil and almost provoked a military conflict. All that happened because of the tiny island in the middle of the Strait of Kerch - Tuzla

Newsflash: He doesn't care. Russia has 3.5X the number of men to run through.

population wise yes.... but when they start "drafting" hard the residents of Moscow and St. Petersburg opinions will change, so factor out those areas. and at what point to the eastern Russian Oblasts say enough is enough with the conscription rates and losses.....

And russia has pulled a large amount of military resources from the east.... due to shear area and lack of resources, could they easily put down a revolt in those regions......

Rather than being simplistically disagreeable, state your point. Is it your contention Merkel never made the statement?

The article quotes her.

But I know that Obama did relatively little to help the Ukraine military. Didn’t Trump criticize the Obama administration for the lack of lethal aid to Ukraine?

By time for what?

quote:

Merkel: I thought the initiation of NATO accession by Ukraine and Georgia, which was discussed in 2008, was wrong. The countries neither had the necessary prerequisites for this, nor had the consequences of such a decision been fully thought through, both with regard to Russia's actions against Georgia and Ukraine and to NATO and its assistance rules. Or let's look at my policy regarding Russia and Ukraine. I come to the conclusion that I made the decisions I made back then in a way that is understandable to me today. It was an attempt to prevent just such a war. The fact that this was not successful does not mean that the attempts were wrong. The 2014 Minsk Agreement was an attempt to give Ukraine time.

Reading what you posted I’m led to believe she thought the Ukrainians weren’t ready to join NATO. The Minsk agreement gave Ukraine time to rebuild their economy as well as their defense.

She’s talking in the past tense. She was one of the mediators. NATO waxing involved. It was the Germans, and the French who acted as mediators. She’s looking back in time snd she’s trying to make the Minsk Protocols look successful because the two Protocols did not do what they were intended to do.

There was no ceasefire. The fighting continued. The other provisions were sloughed over or ignored.

why do you think he’d just let the Ukrainians live in peace?

He wouldn’t.Yet, he did ... until 2014. It's a conundrum. Why did he do that?

No he didn’t. Russian and Ukrainian relations weren’t good. There were plenty of economic issues, issues over Sevestapol, Georgia, the EU, etc. Of course they interfered in Ukrainian elections, you know that.

meanwhile on the cyber front...

Ukraine’s HUR disrupts Russian Tax Service, erases entire database, full recovery impossible
December 12, 2023, 08:35 AM

Cyber experts from the Ukrainian military’s Main Intelligence Directorate (HUR) have successfully attacked the Russian Federal Tax System and the IT company Office.ed-it.ru. The “paralysis” in the operation of the Russian system will persist for at least a month, with full recovery impossible, the HUR stated on Dec. 12.

The operation took place a few days ago. Military intelligence operatives infiltrated the central server of the tax system and over 2,300 of its regional servers throughout Russia and occupied Crimea.

The servers were infected with malware, and both the main database and its backup copies were completely destroyed, the HUR said.

I hope that the GOP continues to hold out and insist on an actual plan for victory. Biden needs to stop micromanaging the war and commit to equipping Ukraine with what it needs to retake its territory.

There was a story recently that the Biden Administration wants Ukraine to simply hold the line for a year until Russia gets tired of the war and wants to withdraw. That's a stupid plan.

It's as if the plan to give just enough for Ukraine to hold out until Nov. 2024.

Saves money in the near term. If they are not retrieved then they are reported as missing and their families are not compensated until some number of years have passed (I don't remember how many years).

Yep. "Russian infantry man [sic] lay dead in the fields near Avdiivka, not being picked up by their comrades." Authenticity might be questionable, but the music really cinches the case.

That’s beyond retarded. Russians only understand force. I can’t think of many instances in history where someone won by “waiting out” Russia.

France

1. The USA and EU whose economies dwarf that of Russia. So if economies win wars, Ukraine will win the economies of Ukraine and its allies are bigger than Russia.

2. The economy of the British Empire was greater than that of the American colonies and France and Spain combined but Britain still lost.

3. The economies of the Axis powers were greater than that of the Allies in 1941 but they still lost. The economic power of Rome was massively greater than that of the Vandals but the Vandals sacked Rome. The Persian empire economy was greater than Macedonia yet Macedonia conquered Persia. Your argument has more flaws in it than Russia’s plan for a 3 day special military operation.

Today, the Department of Defense (DoD) announced additional security assistance to meet Ukraine's critical security and defense needs.

This package utilizes assistance previously authorized for Ukraine during prior fiscal years under Presidential Drawdown Authority (PDA) that remained after the PDA revaluation process.

The capabilities in this package, valued at up to $200 million, include:

AIM-9M missiles for air defense;

Additional ammunition for High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS);
155mm and 105mm artillery rounds;

It’s heart breaking to see all these young men die and their commander in chief doesn’t care at all.
