I know Yanukovych says machine guns fired on his limo, was that proven?

Yeah, that why 1000 Russian tanks got stopped cold on their drive to Kiev.

I confess, I did not know much about Ukraine at the outset of the war. I estimated that Russia would overwhelm them with their overwhelming numbers of tanks, artillery, planes and of course men.

I was looking at various military web site projections as to the size of Ukraine's active military potential and reserves. Add to that a lot of Javelins, their own antitank guided rockets and a bunch of Stingers.

The 1000 tank and armored vehicle column that tried to come in on a three pronged attack on Kiev found the soil to be too soft and they all ended up on a single paved road in a month long traffic jam. It became a turkey shoot.

Now Russia is using old artillery without adequate range, accuracy or serious counter battery fire.

Ukraine's Swedish Archer Effective firing range
30 km (19 mi) with standard shells
45 km (28 mi) with base bleed
35 km (22 mi) with BONUS
60 km (37 mi) with M982 Excalibur

Effective firing range
M107: 21 km (13 mi)
M795: 23.5 km (14.6 mi)
ERFB: M795E1 30 km (19 mi) base bleed
Excalibur: 40 km (25 mi)[9]

Greater accuracy means less wear and tear on the tubes.

Funny that I never hear people like you mention things like Russia openly trying to assassinate a Ukrainian presidential candidate(who won, I might add), by poisoning him (in 2004, since you’ll probably need to go read up on it). Is there a reason you never want to talk about that?

The Yushchenko episode was terrible. Typical Putin. He is an animal.

Putin's expectation was he'd blitz into Kyiv, depose the government, arrest Zelenskyy, install a pro-Ruskie regime, take the eastern oblasts and be done. Ukraine kicked Russia's arse in that regard.

But that does not change facts as they are now in the east.

Ok you’re clearly capable of reason. I just don’t see how you can square that away with this war being anyone but Russia’s fault. As the Yushchenko attempted assassination showed us, Putin has been hellbent on subsuming ukraine ever since he took office for the simple reason that he wants to aggregate as much of the Russian empire as possible.

It is a large MARSH, starting at the Polish border. Its where partisans hide and attacked during WWII.

What could go wrong with such idiotic planning?

War is the failure of diplomacy.

Let's talk diplomacy:

In terms of "fault" what was the purpose of eastward NATO expansion during the Yeltsin regime?

What was the expected result of the Bucharest Summit Declaration in 2008, when Russia preemptively had declared that NATO in Ukraine/Georgia would mean war?

What was the expected result of US involvement in overthrowing a DEMOCRATICALLY ELECTED Ukrainian President because he was pro-Russian?

In short, no NATO, no war. No US interference, no war. Those elements leave "responsibility for war" as shared ... at the least. Do they not?

It's possible that Putin is a villainous a-hole and NATO has outlasted usefulness(at last as far as the US' involvement is concerned) at the same time.

Oh I'm sure they do. Then again the eastern Europeans, or Europe as a whole are more than welcome to create their own defense alliance that doesn't require the United States to guarantee the defense of an entire continent. I mean, Europe is pretty wealthy and has a well educated populace and industrial base.
