Blinken is in Kyiv right now. CNN says that the US will announce new military aid worth over $1 billion. That's certainly appropriate, as there's $5.7 billion in presidential drawdown authority that will expire at the end of the month if unused.

INTELLIGENCE UPDATE
UPDATE ON UKRAINE
06 September 2023

Russia's new school year has begun with a new curriculum incorporating both military skills and the Kremlin's view of the history of Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin personally held an open lesson with 30 schoolchildren on the first day of term. Topics in the updated national history exam include Crimean reunification with Russia and the 'Special Military Operation' in Ukraine.

Russia's parliament approved the curriculum last year. One element, the "Basics of Life Safety", is aimed towards senior students and includes a basic military training module. This will include handling Kalashnikovs, the use of hand grenades, uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV) operations, and battlefield first aid. Pupils may also be visited by Ukraine veterans.

The new curriculum serves three objectives: to indoctrinate students with the Kremlin rationale for the 'Special Military Operation', instil students with a martial mindset, and reduce training timelines for onwards mobilisation and deployment.

The introduction of UAV operations indicates their evolving importance on the battlefield and the lessons learnt about these systems directly from the conflict in Ukraine.

interesting article on Ukraine's missile development. Reported to have access to up to date guidance systems.

ANALYSIS: Ukraine’s New Long-Range Missiles – Born of Necessity, Mother of Invention

With the West withholding long-range tactical weapons for fear of escalation, Ukraine is rediscovering its arms-maker legacy and developing its own solutions which may let Kyiv strike even deeper

article concludes with...

In spite of public statements by President Zelensky and Oleksiy Danilov, Secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) that any weapons would only be used against military targets, the ability to strike between 700 to 1,000 kilometers or more provides the ability to strike deep into Russia.

That will focus the minds of not only the Kremlin but also Ukraine’s Western allies.

It makes a lot of sense. Ukraine is providing air defense to the whole country and the Novo-Tsar is only worried about defending Moscow and the belt around the active conflict.

Force them to cover deep and the Ukrainians will have greater success at the front.

What’s the billion dollars for? I was told it was cheaper to give you Ukraine military equipment than it is to dispose of it. I assume equipment disposal was already accounted for in some other portion of the pentagon’s budget. Hell, we should be turning a profit by aiding Ukraine in this war.

Everything has to be accounted for, that’s how government works.

If they give Ukraine 1 Billion dollars in Bradleys it’s no different than giving 1 Billion dollars in wheat, or cash.
When they announce the deal, they usually announce what we are giving Ukraine.

Stop being ridiculous. The war in Ukraine is costing the US taxpayer money. There’s nothing wrong with admitting that.

Yeah man, I know how works. I’m just sick of the argument that aiding Ukraine is basically of no cost to the US taxpayer. It’s a stupid argument that only a stupid person would make.

Yes they are, but not near as much as Biden’s war on the climate/inflation.

I don't disagree.. however, the money spent sending equipment to help cripple a foreign power that has consistently proven to be a bad actor is a much better (and probably less expensive) investment than retiring the same equipment.

..and there is nothing wrong with admitting that...

What could possibly go wrong letting kids play with hand grenades? fricking Russians…..they truly are a different breed of human-ish behavior.

On a better note Raytheon is cleaning up in this war. They have so many new contracts and now they have maxed out production of the AIM-120 AMRAAM in order to be able to keep up supply for us and Ukraine both. Their max is only 1200 missiles a year though so the Uke pilots are going to have to practice some real fire discipline until the AIM-260 JATM starts production around the start of 2024.

This should make a significant contribution.

The fire support Bradley M7 variant has made its debut on the Zaporizhzhia front to further Ukraine’s already formidable counter battery fire.

quote:

The M7 Bradley BFIST system, tailored for target spotting and streamlining the coordination of indirect artillery fire, boasts an operational range of up to 20 kilometers, rendering it compatible with systems such as the M142 HIMARS, M270 MLRS, and various munitions, including the M982 Excalibur 155mm precision howitzer rounds. This deployment follows the United States' announcement in February 2023 regarding the delivery of four M7 BFIST vehicles to Ukraine.

Originally based on the Bradley M2A2 ODS-SA Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV), these vehicles have undergone a significant transformation. The traditional launcher unit for TOW anti-tank missiles has been replaced with advanced target location equipment and a variety of sensors, all geared towards improving their ability to spot targets and effectively coordinate artillery fire.

The Russians have started looting businesses in Zaporizhzhia Oblast and have developed a plan to smuggle out high-value items due to the challenging situation on the southern front.

Source: Ukraine’s National Resistance Center (NRC)

Details: The NRC has reported that the Russian occupying forces have looted a local forging and stamping plant in the temporarily occupied city of Tokmak. The Russian military took most of the equipment, and its further status is unknown.

Furthermore, the local occupying authorities drafted a plan to take valuables out of the seized city. It will be put into action should the situation worsen for the Russians.

Weird that Russia is just now looting and planning for the fall of Tokmak even though the offensive is 3 months old and Tokmak is only like 18 miles from the original frontlines.

I never said that it wasn't costing some present day tax dollars but the lion's share in Ronald Reagan era tax dollars. What is has exposed is that the vaunted "Military Industrial Complex" is a shell of itself. That kneecapping of it started under Obama.

Not really. They initially planned on keeping it so there was no need to loot this plant facility.

The real news isn’t the looting, Russia always loots, steals, and takes all valuables. The real news is Russia is planning to retreat.

That’s a valid argument. But people need to stop making the ridiculous argument that it’s cheaper than getting rid of equipment. Or that everything Ukraine is getting is old used of shite. It’s just wildly incorrect. Not only incorrect, it’s just flat out made up
