You don't have to believe it but it has been reported to be that for years. Putin saw the need to build up the FSB and did just that.
Just any tinhorn dictator, he has surrounded himself with people he can trust to be loyal to him as well.

BTW, how is Niger going to thrive as "free from the West" without the $3.1 billion it receives annually from the US, EU and UN? Otherwise it imports more than it exports annually and its not like the US with plenty of money in country.

Rybar, just now:

quote:

Orekhovsky area
situation as of 18.00 August 1, 2023

As in other areas of the Zaporozhye direction, there is some calm at the moment near Orekhov. Russian troops strike at a concentration of enemy manpower and equipment, destroying a D-20 howitzer, a mortar crew, a tank and three vehicles.

??In the Rabotino area, the Armed Forces of Ukraine launched an attack on the positions of the Russian Armed Forces with small forces, but withdrew under fire. Also, Ukrainian formations are actively conducting reconnaissance in the direction of the Mirnoye settlement.

??According to the Archangel of the Spetsnaz, (LINK early in the morning, a Ukrainian DRG of 16 people tried to enter the village of Pyatikhatky, which has been in the “gray zone” since June. However, the patrol discovered it in a timely manner, and after the shooting battle the enemy went to the starting line.

The intensity of the movement of APU equipment in the area has decreased: apparently, after the last unsuccessful attacks, the enemy took it away from the LBS so that the armored vehicles would not become victims of Russian anti-tank systems and drones. Ukrainian formations are regrouping to resume the assault on the positions of the RF Armed Forces.

The intensity of fighting all along the front definitely seems to have decreased in the last few days. Here was Rybar's report, earlier this morning, from the Velyka Novosilka axis -- I do not believe that they are correct about "the heights around Staromaiorkse."

quote:

Vremievsky site
situation as of 16.00 August 1, 2023

Relative calm remains in the sector near Vremyevka: after weeks of fighting near Staromayorsky, the enemy does not take active offensive actions and regroups to resume attacks.

The village itself is now completely destroyed. However, Russian troops are making sorties to improve their positions around the village. The heights around Staromayorsky are still under the control of the RF Armed Forces.

At the same time, Russian servicemen continue to conduct counter-battery fire and destroy equipment of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. To the south-west of Bolshaya Novoselka, they covered the 2B11 mortar crew, and near Neskuchny and Novodonetsk, using FPV drones, they destroyed an enemy tank, vehicle, and UAV launcher.

Moscow, Russia ?
The Icelandic embassy in Moscow is closed from today. ????
The flag was removed from the flagpole, the signboards were dismantled, the staff of the diplomatic mission removed things on Sunday. Earlier, the Icelandic authorities said that relations with Russia were at the "lowest level" and promised to leave on August 1. ??

Ukrainian claims of Russian artillery losses, by month: LINK

I think that Ukrainian claims are clearly exaggerated, but I'm sure that the same pattern would hold if the Oryx list were graphed the same way.

Ukraine's major focus over the course of its offensive has been to take out Russian artillery and ammo depots. One of my bigger questions about the Ukrainian offensive is how well Russia can replace its artillery losses.

1) can they replace them
2) can they replace self propelled artillery with more mobile or will it be more towed

much harder to shoot a scoot with tower vs self propelled

also, drones are great for anti-artillery. they can be spotters for counter battery units, they can kamikaze into them, or they can drop grenades on them

GeauxxTigers23 - off thread topic, but what do you make of the other nearby African nations supporting the coup in Niger and the Nigerians standing with the west and the elected govt?

I don’t think ECOWAS will really act so my base assumption is we don’t really get some sort of multinational war across west Africa, but interested in your opinion given your experiences there.

What are Russia/Belarus trying to accomplish provoking Poland? I don't see the logic.

They claim they are going to retake the Suwalki Gap that runs between Poland and Lithuania that would connect Belarus and Kalingrad. That would cut off the Baltics from NATO at least via land and trap them between Belarus (Russia lite) and Russia.

Whether they can or actually will is another story. It seems at minimum they want it seen as though they can and may.

Seems like the minds running NATO for Nato countries would know this and be ready. In this case NATO would quickly have air superiority. If NATO were to lose this one, I don't know what to think?

Maybe a bit of a ruse to divert attention and resources away from Ukraine...

Putin is not this stupid.
Russia would get it's arse handed to it, with the war going on in Ukraine.
The only reason i can see for Russia actually threatening this is to ratchet up tensions for a more credible nuclear threat in order to negotiate a settlement in Ukraine.

Feb 24th 2022 proved that to be wrong. Not a lot different than the "rebellion" in the Donbas in 2014.

Edit: Also the alliance with the junta in Niger and French withdrawal means that France can concentrate on Europe with its very capable military. It is the only European nation with an expedition capability.

Russian sailors in Black Sea issue evacuation call

Ukrainian forces intercepted communications by the Ka-29 crew about the evacuation of Russian sailors in the Black Sea.

This was reported by Babel with reference to a source in the Ukrainian Defence Forces. The online media publishes audio transcripts of the conversation.

On the morning of August 1, 2023, the Russian Ministry of Defense reported an “unsuccessful” attack by three naval drones of the Black Sea Fleet Project 22160 patrol ships “Sergey Kotov” and “Vasily Bykov.”

The attack occurred 340 km from Sevastopol, and all the drones were allegedly destroyed.

As noted, the intercepted conversation involved crews of Ka-29 helicopters, which are participating in the evacuation of Russian sailors.

According to information spread by Russian social media users, the Sparta-IV container ship, which is capable of carrying weapons from Syria, was among the attacked ships.

Babel’s source said that now Russian sailors on one of these ships were asking for the evacuation of the victims.

According to the publication, Ka-29 helicopters are involved in the evacuation, and are ordered to deliver the bodies of the dead and wounded to the territory of the Admiral Nakhimov Higher Naval School at Sevastopol.

Drones are taking a key role which brings up what will be the next generation of counter drone defenses. EMPs? Automated guns? Jamming before they are AI directed?
