Russia is bombarding Odessa right now. It's especially destroying the port in the wake of the expiration of the grain deal.

Overall, reports are saying that this is the heaviest bombardment that Odessa has taken since the start of the war.

This would be the second day in a row then as there was quite a few drone strikes there last night.

Supposed Video from Odessa

Looks like Russia is staying true to form and hitting random civilian targets. I don't understand that strategy of using valuable precision-guided munitions on targets with no military or strategic value.

Crimean news reports that this was a ???? Kaliber missile, launched against the port city of Odesa ????, tonight.

The only good news:

So many Crimean took videos and put them on social media that now we know where the ???? missile launch site is located.

Just an extraordinary scene in Odesa tonight of air defenses trying to fend off drone and missile attacks, far bigger than last night. Sky lit up with tracers and flashes, monster blasts setting off car alarms. Stopped around 20 mins ago but lasted over an hour.

I'm reading that they are leveling a port. The US SOS says this will complicate logistics for weapon shipments

Key Takeaways:

The July 17 Kerch Strait Bridge attack is likely having immediate ramifications on Russian military logistics in southern Ukraine.

Russian forces conducted a strike campaign ostensibly against Ukrainian military objects in southern Ukraine in explicit retaliation for the Kerch Strait Bridge attack.

The dismissal of former Russian 58th Combined Arms Army (CAA) Commander Major General Ivan Popov and the issues he cited continue to have effects on Russian military operations in southern Ukraine and the discourse around these operations.

Ukrainian forces conducted counteroffensive actions on at least three sectors of the frontline against the backdrop of increased Russian offensive operations and claimed tactical gains along the Kharkiv-Luhansk Oblast border on July 18.

Russia continues legislative manipulations to repress domestic dissent through introducing fear of criminal liability.

The Telegraph concluded that Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko and Belarusian authorities are actively involved in the forced deportation of Ukrainian children.

Russian forces continued offensive operations along the Kupyansk-Svatove line, southwest of Kreminna, and in the Bakhmut and Avdiivka-Donetsk City areas and made limited territorial gains in all sectors.

Ukrainian forces continued counteroffensive operations around Bakhmut and advanced north of Bakhmut.

Ukrainian forces conducted counteroffensive operations in the western Donetsk-eastern Zaporizhia area and in western Zaporizhia Oblast and reportedly made limited advances.

Russian forces conducted limited ground attacks in the western Donetsk-eastern Zaporizhia oblast area and recently made limited advances in western Zaporizhia Oblast.

Some Russian sources suggested that recent measures supporting the development of the Russian National Guard (Rosgvardia) allow it to posture as an alternative Russian military formation.

Russia continues to formalize methods of social programming targeted at youth in occupied areas of Ukraine.

If Russia didn't have nukes we probably would. Their navy is pretty bad.

Stopping grain flow is a decision point that no one wants to see.

China wants the grain. Africa wants the grain. America and Europe (outside of farmers) want cheap food.

Russia is not attacking Odessa to hurt Ukraine- its attacking Odessa to hurt the world and put a time limit on the war.

One thing is certain, Turkey was likely quite serious about escorting ships and this was the only play Russia could make to impede grain shipments without instigating conflict with Turkey.

Where are you reading that? Whoever is saying that doesn’t have a clue about what they are talking about. There are no weapon shipments going into Ukraine via the port at Odessa. Russia controls the Black Sea, they aren’t going to allow weapon shipments to flow thru it to Ukraine.

The ME also depends on the grain coming from here. Very real possibility of famine in Africa and the ME.
China could very well have serious food problems also.

This is looking very much like a tantrum style retaliation rather than a coherent strategic one. There is strategic value in land locking Ukraine but the potential damage to relations with several neutral or friendly countries dependant on grain from Ukraine is significant, and Russia has few of those right now.

Russia could pay a steep price for what appears to be an attempt salve their national pride.

Edit: As a side note, I find it interesting they targeted areas that were likely less well defended by AD. For all the claims of the destroyed Patriot batteries in Kyiv there has been little sent there recently.

Russia neutering its long range weapons advantages by choosing to blow up civilians in high rises instead of actual Ukraine military targets is going to lead to their downfall.

British Defence Intelligence
INTELLIGENCE UPDATE
UPDATE ON UKRAINE 19 July 2023

Since the start of July 2023, there has highly likely been an increase in fighting around the lower reaches of the Dnipro River.

As well as intense combat on the eastern bank around the small Ukrainian bridgehead near the ruined Antonivsky Bridge, small units of Russian and Ukrainian troops have also been contesting islands in the Dnipro delta.

Both sides are using small, fast motorboats, and Ukraine has successfully used tactical one-way attack uncrewed aerial vehicles to destroy some Russian boats.

Russia faces a dilemma in deciding whether to respond to these threats by strengthening its Dnipro Group of Forces at the expense of the stretched units facing the Ukrainian counter-offensive in Zaporizhzhia Oblast.

Port and critical infrastructure hit in Russian missile and drone attack in southern Ukraine
19.07.2023 11:58

Russian invaders attacked the port and critical infrastructure in southern Ukraine overnight, injuring at least seven people.

Ukraine's Operational Command South said this in a post on Facebook, Ukrinform reports.

"At night, the enraged enemy hit southern Ukraine with a powerful accumulation of missiles and kamikaze drones," the Command said, adding that Ukrainian air defenses intercepted 12 of 12 Kalibr missiles fired from the Sevastopol bay.

Also overnight, the invaders used a coastal missile system in temporarily occupied Crimea and hit Odesa with Oniks missiles and strategic bombers fired Kh-59 and Kh-22 missiles. Simultaneously with the missile attack, the Russians launched Shahed-136 one-way attack drones in the south.

The Kh-59 missile was shot down as it approached the coast and fell in a residential area of Odesa, leaving a large crater, with several buildings damaged by the blast wave. Three civilians were injured.

The Oniks and Kh-22 missiles targeted the port and critical infrastructure. The enemy hit a grain and oil terminal, damaging reservoirs and loading equipment. A fire started, and all competent services were working to eliminate the consequences. There was no information about casualties.

"In the Odesa region, an industrial facility was hit, where a civilian employee was injured, and two warehouses in different locations were hit - with tobacco and fireworks," the Operational Command South said

Eight Shahed-136 drones were shot down in the sky over the Odesa region and two more over the Mykolaiv region. Recreational infrastructure facilities in the coastal zone of the Kobleve community were damaged by drone debris and caught fire. Two civilians were injured.

Also, due to combat work to destroy missiles and drones, several apartment buildings were damaged in residential areas in Odesa by the blast wave.

"At least six Odesa residents, including a nine-year-old boy, who sustained injuries from broken glass and other objects, sought medical help," the report said.

Russia opened a criminal case against Colonel of GRU Vladimir Kvachkov, a close Girkin's ally and a member of the "Angry Patriots Club", accusing him of discrediting the Russian Armed Forces.

It is a notable case as Kvachkov is well-known in "patriotic" and "nationalist" circles in Russia, he is reasonably respected among rashists.

He was trialled for his "anti-liberal" attacks and even an attempt to assassinate a senior Russian official Anatoly Chubais in the previous two decades.

He's what one could describe as a quintessential vatnik, a lover of spreading anti-Western, anti-Ukrainian hate, conspiracy theories, and imperialistic, pro-Soviet views. He's reasonably respected in the military.

Despite appearing to be a perfect Putin supporter - Kvachkov is an experienced military man and spetsnaz theorist, it did not save him. Earlier, Kvachkov joined Girkin in the critique of the Russian Armed Forces, but was arguably more severe in his insults directed at Putin.
