??Minister of Defense Oleksii Reznikov told how Ukraine will use US cluster munitions:

- ammunition will not be used on the territory of the russian federation - only for the de-occupation of internationally recognized Ukrainian territories;

- ammunition will be used only in places of concentration of the russian military;

- Ukraine will keep strict records of the use of these weapons and the local areas where they will be used. After liberation, these areas will be prioritized for demining;

- Ukraine will report to its partners on the use of these munitions and their effectiveness.

Ukraine continues its attack in the areas south of Bakhmut.

On the heights next to Klischiivka, there is a fortified position which seemed to hold back the Ukrainian offensive for days. This obstacle is now likely defeated, and Ukraine should be soon in the village itself. 1/4

Satellite images show that fighting in the area has been heavy, and reports of intense artillery fire are true. Some treelines have practically ceased to exist.

This is not unusual in this war - both sides often try to take advantage of the little natural cover there is. 2/4

In the big picture, a lot is happening in the Bakhmut area.

In addition to Klischiivka, AFU has made gains towards Berkhivka. They're also pushing in the immediate vicinity of western Bakhmut while simultaneously clearing the eastern side of Donets-Donbas canal. 3/4

Our team at @Black_BirdGroup is monitoring the situation closely. Things are looking positive for the Ukrainians at the moment.

Our interactive map can be found here. 4/4 LINK

Popular Mechanics:

quote:

For example, a study of artillery in the Vietnam War found that it took an average of 13 to 14 regular 155-millimeter howitzer rounds to inflict one casualty, compared to just under two (1.7) improved cluster rounds—making the latter eight times more lethal. Testing also found that cluster munitions were more than an order of magnitude more likely to inflict direct hits on the thin top armor of vehicles. A recent letter by Republicans in Congress urging Biden to release cluster weapons claimed that each DPICM was equivalent to five conventional rounds.
quote:

The M864 uses base-bleed technology to reduce drag by 50% and thereby achieve a range of 18.6 miles. Each one is packed full with 48 M42 and 24 M46 dual-purpose ‘grenades’ which can individually penetrate up to 70-millimeters of armor.

This article also mentions that M915 shells for 105mm howitzers might also have a low enough dud rate.

quote:

The U.S. might eventually consider transferring air-dropped cluster weapons for Ukraine to jerry-rig onto Soviet warplanes as well. Indeed, Ukraine has previously requested CBU-100 Rockeye II air-dropped cluster bombs, which were widely used in the Vietnam War. Allegedly, these were requested with the intent to use the 247 Mk.118 ant-tank submunitions in each bomb to arm small drones.

Other allies of Ukraine and Russia not party to the cluster weapon convention might now consider selling or donating them now that Turkey and the U.S. have broken the taboo. Iran or North Korea might sell theirs to Russia. Estonia, Finland, Greece, Latvia, Poland and Romania have all transferred weapons to Ukraine and do not participate in the anti-cluster weapon treaty.

This is a field outside of Kharkiv where spent Russian cluster bombs are stored. Russia used cluster bombs with a 30% dud rate to attack inside Ukrainian cities.

Meanwhile, leftists are caterwauling about us providing Ukraine bombs with a 2% dud rate to use in open fields.

Oh wow!

In the swap that Putin did to get his buddy Viktor Medvedchuk back from Ukraine, Putin agreed to free the Azov fighters who defended Mariupol, but Erdogan to keep the six leaders in the Turkey until the end of the war.

After Zelensky's visit to Turkey yesterday, those six Azov leaders just went home to Ukraine.

This is absolutely going to infuriate Putin. It's a total humiliation of him by Erdogan. Guys like Girkin are going to have seizures the next few days.

Russian Telegram channel Two Majors collects some of the early Russian reaction:

quote:

On the return of the commanders of the terrorists "Azov" to Ukraine from Turkey

Kitten @voenkorKotenok:
they had previously been handed over to Turkey as part of the exchange that gave Moscow Medvedchuk, and were to remain under Erdogan's care until the end of the war.

However, after negotiations with Zelensky, "friend Rejep", for the sake of whose re-election Russia extended the "grain deal", decided that it would be nice to make a nice gesture towards his Ukrainian colleague, and the Azov people simply flew to Kiev with Zelensky.

Kots: @sashakots
It's pointless to even comment on it. It is possible to extend the grain deal.

Romanov @romanov_92:
this is a strict observance of the traditions of Khasavyurt

Belarusian security official @belarusian_silovik
According to my information, this is one of the conditions for trading after the end of the Ukrainian crisis.

Postovoy @Postovo:
It's pointless to even comment on it. Damn you all, creatures!

@ruspanorama:
What's next? [Erdogan] Violate the Montreux Convention?

Kolyasnikov Sergey (Zergulio) @SergeyKolyasnikov:
I don’t even know what to say, so as not to please the article.

Front bird @frontbird:
Commenting on this is not something that is difficult - it's just a complete farce! Who are we at war with? And in truth, against cooks and drivers...

@designersmil propagandist's notebook
The rest of the killers will also immediately be included in the fight against Russia. The murderers who shot civilians in Mariupol escaped legal punishment for their crimes. Unfortunately, this war is replete with such failures. The failures of those who carelessly reacted to the conflict of fraternal peoples

BRIF MOSCOW (not to be confused with liberals) @rusbrief_moscow:
We have a question: is Medvedchuk returning to Ukraine?

Talipov online @talipovonline
What is denazification? What is the purpose of denazification? How will the return of the leaders of Nazi Azov to the front affect the morale of the Armed Forces of Ukraine?

Turned in the war @voenacher:
Well, it looks like the Sultan has been ruined by a lucrative grain deal and has begun to squeeze his leverage. Let's see where it leads, we'll see. In any case, he will not put them back, which means that the bridges have been burned.

True Truth @Pravdivaya_pravda:
Have we been dumped again? What is the value of exchanging manure for Medvedchuk? So many questions and few answers

Rybar @rybar:
It was extremely easy to avoid the situation with the return of the Azov commanders from Turkey - not to arrange very, very cunning schemes last year with the transfer of captives to a third country, which, all the more so, had never been seen in allied sympathies for Russia.

Battle_?? _Sailor @BattleSailor_13:
Another "victory" in 404 and a nervous weekend in Russia. Friends, remember that Russia has only two allies: the Army and the Navy.

Russia getting mad that someone didn’t do what they promised is just plain ironic and funny as hell. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black!

I’m not sure any country straddles more sides than Turkey. It’s actually quite impressive, and fitting for the nation that straddles Europe and Asia.

Look, i enjoy watching Russia fail miserably. I enjoy watching their invincible khinzals get intercepted. I enjoy watching them flail around claiming to have destroyed 3x the number of himars as we actually sent.

But complaining about blurred moral high ground is just fricking rich.

India does a pretty good job.

But yea, Turkey might have a slight edge on that.

Kazakhstan is starting to as well. Recently they detained a hacker wanted by both the US and Russia on espionage charges.

When asked who they’d extradite to they basically said “we’ll wait and see who comes out on top in the war”

Kazakhstan is in an interesting position. The population is 16% Russian (down from 40% at the collapse of the Soviet Union). Russian IS the language of business. Kazakhstan broke ranks with Russian, especially early in the invasion of Ukraine. They are a country with vast mineral resources in country larger than Europe with a population of only 19 million. They know that after Ukraine they may well be next on the Russian wish list. But lately as it's becoming clear that Russia can't win in Ukraine Kazakhstan is moving back to closer ties with Russia. Natural gas is a key to this. All through Almaty (largest city in Kazakhastan) there are above ground natural gas pipes to service homes and businesses. I guess it was cheaper than running the pipes underground. Kazakhstan thought they had plenty of natural gas and made a deal to sell some gas to China. In the last couple of years increased demand for natural gas has led to shortages and riots. It's similar in Uzbekistan. There is a deal in the works for Russia to sell fairly cheap natural gas to the 'Stans (gas that used to go to Europe). A year ago Kazakhstan rejected this but now find it advantageous since they don't want more riots. Russia likes it for the political hold it gives them over the 'Stans.

ETA - there are a LOT of Russians in Kazakhstan who are draft age and waiting for the end of the war. Our Kazakh guide would point them out when I was there in May. Apparently the accent is different enough to tell Russians from Russia vs. Russians from Kazakhstan. Our guide also told us that nobody in Kazakhstan knows what actually goes on within their government.

Thank you for sharing your insights and experiences. These are places in the world that don't receive much attention, either at the political or social level. I enjoy learning what life is like for the average Joe in random places like central Africa, the Stans or SE Asia, etc.

Looks like Ukraine will be getting some T-155 Firtina self propelled howitzers from Turkey which is a Turkish built version of the South Korean K9 Thunder. They are also working on a deal for Ukraine to produce these in the future likely making that the new future standard SPH of the Ukrainian army. This makes sense with Ukraine’s land neighbor in Poland as well as Turkey right across the Black Sea both adopting the K9 or their own version into their armed forces.

I don't think I have said anything positive or negative about Zelensky IIT and as far as I remember I have only uttered his name to mention we rarely invoke his name ITT when "we" are accused of dick riding. Prior to 2/20 I couldn't tell you more about him than he was the leader of Ukraine and was a former entertainer.

However, at this point, I have to say he is acquitting himself well as a wartime leader. Whether countries are inclined to support him or not he must be charismatic because while he doesn't get everything he asks for he gets more than I would expect from sources I definitely would not expect it from. Quite oddly he does seem to be the man for the moment. Putin on the other hand has performed far less favorably than I would have guessed 18 months ago.

ISW: The deployment of almost the entirety of the Russian Eastern Grouping of Forces and extensive Southern Military District elements to the frontline in southern Ukraine suggests that Russian defenses in southern Ukraine may be brittle.
