Maybe they worked together to create a crisis, then solved the crisis. This creates domestic conditions for a plausible face saving off ramp out of Ukraine.
They both know the war is not winnable for Russia. So it's about distracting the public from their own failures. They didn't lose a war in Ukraine, they saved Russia from a coup!
