Iceland has a population smaller than that of the metro area of Baton Rouge or New Orleans, and they have no military, yet they are doing their part.

Government of Iceland

quote:

The Government of Iceland has responded swiftly to Ukraine's request for increased capacity for fuel transportation, by purchasing ten fuel trucks for the Armed Forces of Ukraine, two of which were delivered in the past week.

Transportation of fuel is critical to the defense capabilities and mobility of the Ukrainian armed forces in the face of Russian aggression. Therefore, Ukraine has requested its friends and allies to assist in providing such vehicles. Iceland has responded to this request by purchasing ten used oil trucks from an European supplier. Two trucks were delivered last week and the rest will be delivered in the coming weeks.

That's a bold strategy, Cotton ...

Put an icon and some Russian priests in a military helicopter and fly them all over the border to bless their troops? I would tell them to go for it.

Speaking of casualties in Bakhmut, I saw something the other day that estimated that near the end of March or beginning of April, there were still an estimated 10,000 civilians left in Bakhmut. I believe that estimate was a figure from the Red Cross. I looked up the number after I saw a video of some Ukrainians trying to convince a few elderly people to come with them so they could evacuate them to safety, but they refused.

I just can't imagine there being anywhere close to that many people trying to hold on to an existence in that hellscape that is shown in videos. If anywhere close to true, though, that is completely insane.

A few of them are just people without relatives elsewhere to take care of them, and they are simply scared to leave behind everything that they have and everything that they have known.

But most of them are Russian sympathizers who want their homes to be in Russia. When it comes to the territories along the front lines, what I have read several times is that 60% of the population in these areas is firmly for Ukraine, 20% is pro-Russian, and 20% truly does not care.

Thomas Theiner (@noclador) is a former artillery officer in the Italian Army, now living in Kyiv. He's extremely knowledgeable about NATO weaponry, and I have quoted him here a number of times and probably will again.

But you shouldn't trust him, because he frequently puts out total garbage like the tweet below. We saw another example all last fall, when he repeatedly insisted that Ukraine already had ATACMS and that the Kerch Bridge attack was done with that weapon.

He consistently exaggerates info in favor of Ukraine, like his buddy Chuck Pfarrer.

There are very, very persistent rumors that the M1A1 Abrams tanks will arrive in Ukraine by early June & that F-16 training concluded long ago.

So far we have no confirmation for either; but once F-16 arrive we will quickly know as there will be so many russian air forces losses.

Great interview yesterday by Glenn Greenwald of Jeffrey Sachs. Sachs says he had direct knowledge of a draft U.S./Russia security agreement in December 2021. He later goes into a nice history of how we got here over the last few decades. Interview starts about 47:45.

This war was completely avoidable. The party in this conflict that actually sought diplomacy repeatedly was Russia. Not something you'd read in the NY Times actually, but the fact.

The 12th Ramstein meeting has started.

Sec. Austin said that this meeting "will focus on air defense and accelerating the industrial production of critical systems."

I listened to a couple minutes of it… he gives zero details on what Russia was offering up… then they go straight into nuclear war fear mongering, without giving any credence to what it would mean to actually give in to Russia’s nuclear threats.

Serious question…At this point in the war, how do you feel about Russias performance and how do you see this ending?

I don't have much time this morning to elaborate but I can later on today. I mean it has been a complete disaster for Russia, there is no other way to put it. I think they expected Ukraine to roll over after the first 24-72 hours and it was a massive miscalculation, costing them dearly, in loss of life & armor.

I think they're adapting to the circumstances better of late though and are showing some improvement in strategy. I think people are still underestimating their resilience as a people, they're not going to quit, and the West will lose their appetite for this conflict long before Russia does. As far as I how I see it ending, it's really hard to say, most likely a stalemate of sorts. I personally don't believe Ukraine will ever get Crimea back and I envision Russia will hold onto major parts of the east. I think their ultimate goal is taking Odessa, although at this point it doesn't seem very realistic. I feel like Ukraine better be careful and not get too overzealous with this counteroffensive because if the losses become significant, Russia could then potentially make that push towards Odessa eventually. That could be years from now though, with a lot of death and destruction between now & then.

People like that live in the same zombie world that these Russian teens do:

Foreign Policy

quote:

Nineteen-year-old Alina lives in Nizhny Tagil, a blighted industrial city in Russia’s Ural region. When she’s not studying for her degree in graphic design, she does all the things anyone else of her age might. She hangs out with her boyfriend, Sergey, and goes to the local cinema to watch the latest Hollywood blockbusters, now pirated to circumvent Western sanctions. They down fearsome quantities of alcohol in local bars. She dreams of moving to Moscow to work in the capital’s high-tech industry.

Alina, like most young people in Russia, is addicted to her smartphone. She has uploaded all the trappings of ordinary teenage life to her page on VK, Russia’s version of Facebook. She shows off photos of beach vacations in Egypt and shares videos about nail design, fashion, movies, and TV. She is a big fan of Maisie Williams’s Game of Thrones character, whom Alina calls a “fierce” role model of modern womanhood.

But since Feb. 24, 2022, when Russia sent a massive invasion force into Ukraine, Alina’s VK page has become a different world. Gone are the fripperies of consumerist life. Like hundreds of thousands of other Russians, Alina has joined dozens of government-run and -promoted online groups with names like “REAL Ukraine,” “Antiterror Z,” “Z for Victory,” “The Russian Spring,” and “Ztrength in Truth.” Whether holed up in her bedroom or posting from class, the back seat of a bus, or a bar while chatting with her friends, Alina’s thirst for the world of Russia’s war against Ukraine seems unquenchable.

Alina began by sharing posts from the war groups she had joined. In this conspiracy-fueled world, new “truths” about alleged Ukrainian depravities are uncovered every day, Russia is under constant threat from shadowy U.S. and NATO forces, and Ukraine has to be destroyed to save itself—and Russia—from a spectral Nazi threat. Alina’s VK wall is packed with apocalyptic images of a burning White House in “Fascington, DC,” Orthodox priests blessing the troops at the front, and of Russian President Vladimir Putin depicted as a “savior.” In this alternate reality, a sacred Russia is surrounded by enemies bent on its total obliteration.

As the war in Ukraine unfolded, Alina began to add her own commentary. “Khokhols are assholes,” she wrote, using a derogatory term for Ukrainians. “The white of our Russian flag means cleanliness”; “Ukrofascists, you’re RABID DOGS”; “If I was [in charge] you frickers would get what you deserve”; “Ukrainians, better not talk in Ukrainian, it just sounds stupid, like fricked up Russian.” Putin, Alina posted, is “a gift from God. We are all Putin.”

I don't want to get into American political or cultural controversies, but Russia is not the only place where it's quite possible to simply decide to live in an alternate reality. So many people don't want to live in the real world. Fifty years ago, one's friends and family would tell someone that they were nuts if they tried to do that, but now, there's an online world full of other nutters to provide support.

Putin has wrecked their economy for at least a decade.

If anyone remembers anything about post disaster economy post Katrina, rebuilding is going to be a huge boom for Ukraine.

Can you paraphrase what the draft agreement said? What did it entail? Was Ukraine a part of it? Was NATO?

Thank you, I agree 100% with your first paragraph.

I disagree with parts of the second, specifically that Russia has the capability to push to Odessa. That ship sailed and won't be coming back. (Insert witty Moskova reference)

I am still on the fence on Ukraine regaining Crimea, I think that depends on what happens with the offensive.

The resilience you speak of has always stood out when they were invaded and they were threatened.

This is not the case now. They are the aggressors and you have to know many Russians are asking why?
