Russian brigade flees Bakhmut
by The Kyiv Independent news desk
Ukraine's Third Assault Brigade confirmed on May 9 that the 72nd Separate Motorized Rifle Brigade of the Russian Armed Forces has fled Bakhmut.
The news, prior to the confirmation, was originally announced by Wagner mercenary group founder Yevgeny Prigozhin.
"Prigozhin's report about the escape of the 72nd Separate Motorized Rifle Brigade of the Russian Armed Forces from Bakhmut and the '500 corpses' of Russians who remained there is true. The Third Assault Brigade is grateful for the publicity of our success at the front," the Third Assault Brigade wrote.
According to the statement, assault troops killed 64 Russian soldiers during offensive operations in the southwestern outskirts of Bakhmut.
Additionally, "another 87 were on the way," the statement read. Among the casualties were Wagner mercenaries. Five Russian soldiers were also captured.

Leader of the Azov movement, Andriy Biletskiy, states that Ukrainian forces of the 3rd Assault Brigade liberated a 3 x 2.6km strip of land in Bakhmut, destroying 2 companies of the 72nd Brigade, as well as one of Wagner's assault units.

Just a shout out to you and GOP for the updates and insights. And others.

But I do think that Theiner is wrong to think that Ukraine will concentrate all of its new strike force in one area. I think they will send a brigade to try to take Kreminna, they will send a brigade to Bakhmut or Avdiivka, etc., because they won't want the Russian command to immediately know where the main attack is and rush reserves to that area. It's imperative that the Russian command not understand where the main attack is until it's too late, so there need to be immediate videos of Leopard tanks attacking Kreminna.
I liked the 3 pronged attack plan from a Twitter thread I shared a couple of weeks ago that lead to Melitopol creating a massive wedge between Crimea and Mariupol. Seems like the Russians suspect that’s the direction the offensive is going now though. I’ve seen some evacuation efforts in Melitopol on Twitter. Time will tell I guess.

The retreat of this Russian force from Bakhmut is possibly big news.
Am I correct that this is the most significant advance by either side in months?
I get the sense of disarray in the ranks from (admittedly) unconfirmed reports.
Anybody have reliable data on this?

I think that it's too early. It could end up only being a troop rotation.
Edit: reading more and actually watching the video, it definitely appears that Ukraine has won a tactical victory, but there have been many, many times in this war where one side has taken some land for a short time, only to lose it right back. I'm hopeful, but I want to see visual confirmation.

Was Putin wiping tears from his eyes regarding how puny the parade was?

Yep. The infamous "T-shape" footage where they drove the tank over the trench with a bunch of Russians underneath comes to mind. That trench had been occupied three previous times by the Ukrainians only to lose it when Russia countered and vice versa.

What looks like a Bradley was involved this time. 4 Russian BMP's gone in minutes.

Despite the hatred y'all have for Russians, you should still be able to recognize the significance of this day for them.

I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve seen Russian armored vehicles deploy smoke.

of course that account subscribes to the idea that russia was largely responsible for the allies winning ww2

It appears that Izyum was no fluke. Troops with next to no morale don't stand and fight when power shows up

Outside of the Pacific, is that even a question? Europe would look completely different today if Hitler hadn't been dead set on going east. The amount of US casualties would've been astronomically higher if all of those resources were focused on the western front.

Well 90% of the German dead was by their hand and I believe POWs were pretty even between the two fronts.

I mean, if you go look just at the size of the battles on the eastern front, they dwarf anything that took place on the western front in Europe. They killed a metric frick ton of Nazis.
That guy is conveniently leaving out all the materiel support that the soviets got thanks to uncle Sam.

There is no doubt Soviets paid a high price during WWII.. but the quote that it was "quite literally the greatest tragedy to befall a nation" is an exaggeration..
Stalin alone is thought to be responsible for the death of 20 million of his own people..
That would be what I would consider the greatest tragedy along with the Bolshevik revolution...
