At this point Putin has to recognize he is throwing good money at bad

Any Russian victory in Bakhmut will be pyrrhic at best.

Their strategy now has to be hold off the counter offensive and hope Ukraine comes to the bargaining table afterwards

Prigozhin has now set up Shoigu and Gerasimov for the failure to capture the city.

And if Wagner does somehow still manage to take the city, Prigozhin will claim that they caved and gave them the ammo, which will make them look weak.

Denmark, The Netherlands and Germany will jointly transfer 80 Leopard 1 tanks to Ukraine starting from June 1st, Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen said. Ukrainian servicemen are currently being trained on how to operate the tank. The countries pledged 100 Leopard 1A5.

Getting 80 of the 100 tanks this quickly is big for Ukraine. It will help Ukraine create a follow-on force that can help ensure that momentum from the offensive is not lost.

Edit: "starting June 1st" doesn't necessarily mean that Ukraine will get 80 of them right away.

Putin will order ammo to be delivered to Wagner at the last minute to keep them there. I just don’t believe he’s going to willingly let them pull out because he knows his army can’t hold Bakhmut without Wagner. Hopefully I’m wrong and Putin is that stupid but I’m not convinced.

Ukrainian engineers modify civilian UAVs for the military

Ukrainian engineers have developed a Vezha-1 power supply system for the UAVs, which will allow quadcopters to stay in the air for an unlimited time.

The news was made public by the Technical Support of the Army of Ukraine volunteers group on its social networks.

A group of engineers from the Technical Support of the Army of Ukraine and Cyber Avia jointly developed a UAV power supply system by cable for long-term stay of the aircraft in the air.

The system is already undergoing test trials:

“We conducted test trials of the prototype of the KV-1 project (Vezha-1). This is the Mavic 3 drone’s power supply system via a cable from the ground. Works perfectly. Height up to 35m. The working time is unlimited,” the engineers say.

The drone modified by the developed system can be used as an unlimited flight repeater for FPV drones, a receiver carrier for signals intelligence, a radio antenna holder or a point of long-term observation over the battlefield.

Those museum pieces have killed a lot of people (including innocent civilians) and devastated cities in Ukraine.
Our own museum pieces, B-52s, are very deadly weapons platforms, as well. With more lethal and precise weapons.

Ukraine took delivery of 18 M109A6 SPGs from the U.S. this week, the first time that Ukraine has received any M109’s directly from the U.S. and the first time they have received the M109A6 Paladin variant from anyone. Not sure if this is the artillery systems that were listed in the aid package this week but nonetheless a very substantial addition to their artillery capabilities.

The difference being between our B-52s and their ancient bombers being that we actually do regular maintenance and constant upgrades to our aircraft. For instance the B-52’s are currently in the process of avionics upgrades and the engines will be replaced with new Rolls-Royce F-130 turbofans from the old Pratt & Whitney TF33 engines that have powered the aircraft for decades. This will not only improve the bomber’s power but will also do it up to 30% more efficiently and includes a digital engine control system. Russia’s idea of upgrades are scavenging parts from other planes and sticking them on then calling it a day. Pilots may be flying the same B-52 airframe as their fathers or grandfathers but that’s pretty much where the similarities stop. Sitting in the cockpit of a Tu-95 in 2023 would look just about the same as it would have in 1965 except maybe an off the shelf portable Russian version of a GPS Velcro’d on the dash if you’re lucky.

Routine maintenance and avionics upgrades aside, those decades- old museum pieces are effective weapons platforms to this day.
They have killed a lot of folks and done a lot of damage.
After all, that is why we continue to upgrade and sustain our Beefer fleet.

Just watched a few videos of the FF drone shoot down over Kiev. Everyone and their brother was taking pot shots at it. One old man leaned out a window with his double barrel and gave it a shot. In another clip some guy was plinking at it with his ar 15.. the missle that took it down, looked like it launched from the top of a high rise building. Sure hope that wasn't the case.

They won’t be effective when Ukraine gets 4th gen western fighters with long range air to air missiles and that day is coming soon. Ukraine needs anti air defense systems more than anything else but there aren’t that many extras just laying around to send beyond what has already been sent. The next logical way to defend their airspace is with western fighters with advanced radar and missile systems to track and destroy threats from the air. I’ve long been a skeptic about Ukraine getting F-16s or similar platforms but now I believe when faced with giving up more Patriot, IRIS-T or NASAMS they will realize it will be easier and more cost effective to give used fighters of which there are plenty.

I saw one angle on r/CombatFootage where you could see lots of tracers flying by before the SAM took it out. You could hear a ton of fire trying to take it down.

Seems weird that that many people would be shooting at it if they knew it was one of theirs and knew they were going to shoot it down with a missile. IDK what to think about that incident.

Source? How many pilots have started training on these jets?

It would not shock me to find that some pilots have already been training for months.

Ukraine has selected pilots from their ranks that have a good proficiency of the English language to train on western jets, most likely the f-16, and have started getting them acclimated to the aircraft on their own so that when the decision does finally come to give them fighters the pilots won’t have as steep of a learning curve. A Ukrainian fighter pilot could be taken out of a Mig-29 and would be able to fly an f-16 in a very short time. It’s the tactics how to fight with the aircraft that takes more time. The Dutch are leading the way with this and seem ready to hand over some of their f-16s but they want unanimous agreement first to do so.

So , how will that work if Ukraine gets 4th gen. fighters?
These lumbering Soviet era bombers go up, and they are carrying air launch missiles with considerable ranges: 1600 mi for the old 23 ft. cruise missiles, i understand and about 1200 for hypersonic Killjoys.
Do we have missiles with a range to destroy the bombers or do the fighters intercept the missiles themselves?
Is this more reliable than our new SAM systems?
Do we think we can do so effectively on the hypersonic missiles?

Things from Twitter

Footage claiming to be of Russian use of incendiary munitions in Bahkmut.

@NOELReports

Apparently the acting head of the Zaporizhzia region has ordered the relocation of residents from frontline settlements due to increased military activity on the northern border.

@NOELReports

Regarding the earlier missile and Russian bomber launches, it appears to have been unusual given the time and targets which were more frontline line than civilian, possibly was Russians testing things.

quote:

Explosions reported in Kramatorsk due to missiles fired from Russian strategic bombers.

Reports of false missile launches. Ukrainian sources say that Russia is using EW to trick Ukrainian radars to believe that missiles are incoming.

No reports that missiles are airborne over Ukraine right now. Sporadic reports of UAVs over some oblasts.

Strategic bombers are still airborne as far as I am aware. Some Ukrainian sources are saying that this was probably a reconnaissance/test-run for a later missile attack.

Time will tell. I will update accordingly.
