Which is why Russia has resorted to carpet bombing Kharkiv with Cluster Bombs, which are banned and constitute war crimes for using them. None of the Russian leadership and oligarchs who support this are going to come out unscathed.
Which worries me because they know this so there are only 3 possible outcomes: Russian victory with minimal western interference and we let them get away with it (unlikely)
All out war between NATO as Putin goes all out to try to win. Nukes are used. Worst outcome
Putin assissinated by military leaders/oligarchs. Best possible outcome.
There won’t be a conventional war where Russia loses and they go on trial for war crimes. If it gets close to this Putin will go nuclear

Have the CNN live feed and this thread up while working. Anybody else wondering why we haven't seen anything new in 30+ minutes after the large explosions in Kyiv?
Posted on 2/28/22 at 11:30 am to LegendInMyMind
Some of the footage I just saw was pretty bad. Appears to be several city blocks of residential apartments carpet bombed. More along the lines of what I was expecting the Russians to do.

Has this been proven yet and I missed it? Last I saw was that an organization was putting out older photos to give people an example in what to look for regarding those munitions.

It has been heavily alleged going mainly off the damage that has been done. I haven't looked to see what, if any, verification Bellingcat has gathered.
ETA: It isn't just Bellingcat making those allegations. Others have as well.

The Kyiv Independent@KyivIndependent??After six hours, the first round of the Ukrainian-Russian negotiations is over.
The delegations return to Kyiv and Moscow and will meet again "in the coming days.
No breakthrough, but at least neither side walked away.

Ukrainian Ambassador to the UN General Assembly asking which country “voted for Russia [a newly formed country] to be admitted to the UN” after the breakup of the Soviet Union
No one in the Assembly raises their hands
Incredible moment in the UN.
He's making the argument that according to the UN Charter, a country has to apply for UN membership. When the Soviet Union broke up, the Russian Federation didn't make a new application, so they're not a UN member, thus lose their seat on the Security Council.
ETA, they apparently did make an application that was never voted on.

Hmmm...
Seems like something that would be worth at least a full day of work, no?
Maybe someone could run down to the nearest gas station, pick up a few cartons of cigarettes, some vodka, and some Ding-Dong's so they have the energy to maybe give peace talks a 10-hour day?

Here's a very good Twitter thread about this:
@EliotHiggins
quote:
We're seeing a lot of images of cluster munitions being used in Ukraine, so there's a few things I want to highlight to assist with reporting of the incidents. There's two types of rockets, fired by BM-27 and BM-30 multiple rocket launchers. LINK
quote:
These things are big, this is a reconstruction of one from when they first started being used in Syria, and the diagram on the right gives you a sense of the position of the cluster munitions at the front of the rocket, and the rocket motor behind them. LINK
quote:
Generally when these munitions deploy their submunitions in the air the rocket motor and cluster munition section separate, and land in the ground, just like in this video from Ukraine, showing the cluster section impacting the ground. LINK
quote:
What's we're seeing across Ukraine are the remains of these rockets embedded in the ground, and often being misreported as unexploded rockets. This is evidence of a successful deployment of cluster munitions, not an unexploded weapon. LINK
quote:
They can land several hundreds meters away from where the cluster munitions are released, and the direction of impact can also be established by which way the munition remnants are pointing, like in this example LINK
And he goes on for a few more tweets.

You're right. Both sides walked away.

Well they started at noon. If they made any headway at all they would need to consult with their governments and presumably the Ukrainians would want to do it face to face and not trust electronic communications. IDK.

what does that mean: taking a break from negotiations, but will continue soon? or is Russia still going to continue advancing through Ukraine?
Posted on 2/28/22 at 11:51 am to SlowFlowPro
how would the US providing intel to Ukraine violate the rules of engagement? Other countries are directly providing them with equipment and even soldiers

Russia never even really halted their advance once talks were scheduled. It is their MO to continue putting pressure on the enemy as talks begin. Look at it as leverage for them.

How did Ukraine-Russia ceasefire talks go? A member of the Ukrainian delegation said the negotiations were difficult and the Russian side was biased.

It will be interesting to follow these guns for hire as it becomes more difficult for Russia/Putin to pay them for their services.

There was a Afghanistan video linked here a year or so ago that showed somewhat heavy fighting from a mortar position, I remember in the video they said something about hitting them already with a certain shell.
And miliatry guys on here were saying, oh can't believe they have that on tape, geneva ain't gonna be happy with that on a joking matter. Pretty sure it was cluster ammunition, don't think it's generally regarded in high concern.
