German report that Leopard 1 tanks will eventually be going to Ukraine. However, the tanks will all need repairs and upgrades of various kinds, and the financing of those repairs hasn't yet been finalized, but should happen soon. The article indicates that these tanks won't be in Ukraine anytime soon.

even though most of the Western tanks/armored vehicles will not be in Ukranian hands for a while will negate their use in spring time offensives. but, knowing they will have replacements, coming for lost equipment, they can play a little more loose when it comes to risking them.

ZURICH, Feb 6 (Reuters) - Switzerland is close to breaking with centuries of tradition as a neutral state, as a pro-Ukraine shift in the public and political mood puts pressure on the government to end a ban on exports of Swiss weapons to war zones.

Yeah, and the fact that the Swiss defense industry will go broke, as no other nations will buy their products if those can't be sent to a friendly nation like Ukraine. They are already losing contracts.

But this would free up tons of Gepard ammo, and it would likely grease the wheels for some of the ~100 Leopard 2 tanks that the Swiss have in storage to eventually migrate to Ukraine. Those tanks weren't manufactured in Switzerland, so they could technically now be bought back by Rheinmetall and sent by Germany to Ukraine, but the new law would make it seem more on the level.

I see Russia still has not learned how to conduct combined arms maneuver warfare. I almost pity the common Russian soldier. They’re being led to the slaughter like sheep.

Tale as old as time for Russia.

They lost the Russo-Japan war
They lost WWI
They lost their invasion of Finland
They lost their adventure in Afghanistan
They lost the Cold War
They lost countless Baltic civil wars

They did manage to beat a German army fighting in Russia over a couple thousand kilometer supply line, at a cost of about ~30,000,000 dead.

Their system of government has collapsed at least twice during this period. Perhaps it’s hard to retain a collective memory and adapt accordingly across revolutions, and may be why the Russian memory is found in the stomach.

I’m hearing good things about around 50 of the tanks being good to go…ie little work would have to be done to get them ready…

they only won in WW2 because we supplied them and because we entered the war. Russia is conquered by the end of 1943 if we dont supply them with lend-lease

Anyone else consider the reporting being intentional to goad and increase confidence in russia for the impeding offensive? That maybe this is part of an intelligence play and they’ll end up getting the tanks prior to said offensive and be surprisingly better prepared. Much like the initial offensive?

As far as I'm concerned, the biggest mind game that Ukraine needs to play right now is to keep Putin from declaring another major mobilization until it's too late.

I've said it before, but it's why the (now seemingly inevitable) Russian capture of Bakhmut might end up being a blessing in the long term, if it convinces the Kremlin that they basically have enough troops to advance and continue winning.

I’m implying the collective west ie NATO is playing the mind games with Putin. Once again Ukraine would just get to deliver the real message when Putin FAFO.

I’m not convinced that another mobilization would spell the end for Ukraine. Assuming the ~50-100k dead, ~250k casualties, ~600k currently deployed in/around Ukraine are true, another mobilization would be risky. Russia only has 8 million young men, and 1 million fled and 1 million are already involved. Once they start having to send muscovites the domestic situation might become untenable

Russia is just utterly incapable of fighting a war without losing hundreds of thousands/ millions of lives. For centuries they’ve shown zero regard for their own countrymens’ lives…. It’s why their population is in free fall. Incompetent military leadership, purges, man made famines, large encirclements, etc… their political leadership just doesn’t give a shite.

amzan Kadyrov, a key ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, has begun rattling off threats about attacking Poland after Ukraine.

Kadyrov, the head of Chechnya, suggested Monday that Russia should “denazify and demilitarize” Poland next.

“What if, after the successful completion of the NMD, Russia begins to denazify and demilitarize the next country? After all, after Ukraine, Poland is on the map! I will not hide that I personally have such an intention,” Kadyrov said on Telegram. “I personally have such an intention, and I have repeatedly stated that the fight against Satanism should continue throughout Europe and, first of all, on the territory of Poland.”

Kadyrov warned Tuesday that the time has come for the West to fall to its knees before Russia, predicting that the so-called “special military operation” in Ukraine, would be over by the end of 2023.

Russia has more than it can handle in Ukraine. Their only advantage in this war is they can sustain current loss rates better than Ukraine. The surest way for them to lose it is to bring in NATO on Ukraine’s side.

They only lost around 10 thousand in the first Chechen war in which they were defeated by a nation of around 1 million people.

Agreed, as much as Russia plays mind games the reverse is true of the West too, especially when it comes to the steady raising of the bar in terms of material support.

The unfortunate aspect is that Ukraine bears the brunt of the human cost of it while it plays out, even if without it they would be in far worse shape.

Admittedly I have been surprised by the turn around of several countries on long held positions, while it certainly could have been faster, that it all happened within 12 months is almost speeding for bureaucracy.

From your same article I also find noteworthy:

quote:

“Russia has always been our neighbor. It is our neighbor and it will remain so. It will not vanish miraculously in the foreseeable future. So we have to prepare,” Magierowski told NPR. “We have to be prepared for any eventuality. Poland might be the next target.”

Warsaw is taking the threat seriously. On Tuesday, the Polish military is conducting anti-aircraft drills in an effort to demonstrate to would-be aggressors that Poland should be considered off-limits, according to Polish Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak.

quote:

In a recognition that Poland will be dealing with Russian aggression for some time, Poland has also taken steps to build up its military long-term. Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawieck announced just weeks ago that Poland will increase defense spending to 4 percent of gross domestic product. And due to the public’s anxiety about the conflict, Poland has been training civilians as soldiers.

Putin and his cronies gonna FAFO with Poland. They ain’t playing

Also:

quote:

The U.S. State Department also just approved a possible sale of High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) launchers and related equipment worth approximately $10 billion to Poland as part of Warsaw’s efforts to modernize its military, according to a Department of Defense notice. Congress was formally notified Tuesday. The sale would include 45 Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS), which can reach far longer ranges than HIMARS—a key sale that the Biden administration has not yet green-lighted for Ukraine.

My god Russia just can’t help themselves shooting themselves in the foot. Now they want to go and piss Poland off which they really don’t want to do. They have been modernizing and building their militaries. If they are having this hard of a time with Ukraine the Poland would frick them in arse. Hard.
