Just want to say, very much enjoy the insights of the folks on here that have operated modern tanks. It’s one of the reasons I’m glad this thread has persevered through the occasional flaming. There really are some varied and interesting perspectives.

Biden making the official announcement right now. He just announced 31 Abrams, said it would take time.

LOL, now thanking Scholz for his leadership.

Old man Biden can barely read the teleprompter and is mumbling, but he's mostly managing to get the words out.

Maybe so. But supporting Ukraine is the correct approach, and at least now Germany is going to do their part.

Let's summarize: the 31 Abrams will get to Ukraine in 6-8 months. They will not be part of a spring offensive.

Ukraine has gotten commitments for about 90 Leopards so far, with several more nations announcing soon. They should end up with about 115 from the current round of promises, and these tanks should be in Ukraine by the end of March, by which time training should be completed. Those 115 + the 15 Challengers should give Ukraine a group of 130 tanks to lead the spring offensive.

In that same timeframe, they will also be getting some French AMX-10 "light tanks" and 199 NATO-manufactured IFVs (109 Bradleys, 40 Marders, and 50 CV90s). And they are getting lots more artillery and APCs, MRAPs, and IMVs of various kinds.

Ukraine has said that they are going to form completely new units to use all this equipment. They aren't going to use it piecemeal. And they have units doing combined arms training to learn how these pieces can best work together.

Sometime in April, Ukraine will try to use the new units with all this equipment to break through Russian lines in the south and push to the Sea of Azov, cutting the "land bridge" to Crimea. The question is: do they have enough now to do it?

I'm not extremely emotionally involved in the conflict. Emotionally involved yes but extremely emotionally involved no.

Everything you have said about the maintenance and operation of an Abrams is probably true but none of it is insurmountable obstacles. It's easier for the driver to f**k up the engine in an M1 than a T72 very true which why Ukraine is going to use crews from T72s and T64s to operate the Leopards and they are going to use crews from T80s to operate the M1s. The M1's gas turbine engine is more complicated to work on than a diesel engine which is why the crews from T80s who are already familiar with gas turbine engines are going to operate the M1s and why the drivers of those M1s are all certified as gas turbine engine mechanics. The crews for the M1s and the Leopards are all combat veterans per my friend the Ukrainians a crew has to have a minimum of 6 months combat experience and 5 tank kills be considered for a western MBT. They are doing that because they realize that learning a new tank is going to take time and since the crews will all be veterans they won't have to learn how to operate in combat because they already know how. They can spend their time learning the ins and outs of their new tanks. When reading your posts it sounds like you are projecting your bias about American technology being the best and American soldiers being the best trained and the Ukrainians have no hope of learning to use it since they did not grow up in the Abrams which is just not true as listed by the solutions listed above that the Ukrainians have devised to overcome the obstacles of operating the Abrams.

Gun tube rodeos. Get up on the gun tube in front of the bore evacuator and see how long you can hang on while your battle buddy tries to dump you with the turret controls. Good wat to pass time.

You're going to have a hell of a time keeping the driver awake.

Thes two things together reminded me of a couple of things I hadn't thought about in years.

First, when we were on long FTXs sleep deprivation was part of the training so you would get guys that were basically sleepwalking. They would go into a trance and just follow the luminous cat eyes on the back of the person's patrol cap in front of them. When the person in front got tired of them walking into the back of them when they stopped they would wait for an incline or decline, take their patrol cap off, and start lifting or dropping it beside them as they walked. The sleepwalker would think the terrain was flat and just walk right off a decline or walk right into a hill. That usually kept them awake for the next 30-45 minutes.

When I was a platoon leader I had a 60 gunner (yes I am old) the whole company called B-52 because he was a Big Ugly Fit fricker. He was maybe 6' 3" and about 240 and his walking-around body fat was under 10%. If God prototyped a 60 gunner B52 was it. This guy could sleep anywhere at anytime. We were in Panama and there was a lull in the battle and I was running from position to position to make sure nobody was shot and everyone had adequate ammo and running up to his position I thought he was dead. I ask his ammo bearer where "52" had been hit and he said he hadn't he was just asleep. I said you are fricking shitting me and he said no it is the third time tonight that he had dozed off. Keep in mind only about 10 minutes before 7.62 x 39 rounds were flying all around him. I never did figure out if he has narcolepsy, suffered from Urbach-Wiethe disease, was just a fricking sociopath or some other 'path. He was an incredible gunner so I guess that is all that mattered.

Very interesting clip (10 mins) of Solovyov's morning show clip showing three different guests. One pushes back and the other two spew the party line. The second says Jesus is going to be be their battlefield commander. This is one of the more hilarious Russian state TV clips in a while.

Oh, and the official announcement on the 31 Abrams states that U.S. also will send eight M88 recovery vehicles with them (which are obviously necessary).

We have to be 100% successful in stopping nukes. He doesnt have to be 100% successful in sending them.

i agree...and ftr i would be saying the samething if trump did this. I dont like them being dishonest no matter what. cant have true change if you dont call them out on this kind of stuff

but yes, atleast ukraine is getting some of the stuff they need

in the end, we just have to get the stuff their fast enough to stop this russian offensive and then ukraine can hit them with a knockout counter offensive un the late spring or summer

"Jesus is going to come back and lead our troops to victory." is one of the funniest things they've said in a while. I wonder why BKR hasn't used that argument here on this board.

dont get pissed because you were acting all emotional. I know you are close to this and its painfully obvious.

you are acting like the ukrainians can just do and handle whatever.....will they with time...sure but its going to take a ton of training and will not be easy. thats all that was being said.

im going to choose to ignore this since you are acting like a female on the rag.
