Giving, leasing, or selling Ukraine fighters or MBTs isn’t going to require a debate or a vote in Congress because it’s already been approved by Congress when Lens-Lease was approved.
So it did require a debate and vote in Congress.
Yes it required a vote and that vote happened and it's been approved. It is over and done so it is no longer a political issue.
quote:
Strategic specifically is very very much a political issue.
Politics or atleast American politics is not deciding if Russia launches its anticipated offensive from the Donbass or Belarus.
quote:
But not a domestic one. It is quite literally a foreign policy topic very much related to the war in Ukraine.
How is the USA leaving NATO very much related to the war in Ukraine? I can see the argument for Ukraine joining NATO, but there is no logical argument that America leaving NATO is related to the war in Ukraine.

Face it, you’re mincing your words and deflecting because in your opinion only what you deem appropriate should be open for discussion in this thread.
Chicken was the one who said no politics on this board. I would love to debate the domestic and geopolitical aspects of the war and everything related to it, but the almighty Chicken has said keep that stuff on the political board.

European diplomats and UN and NGO workers so I socialize with them and go to their silly dinner parties while they all suck each other off about this or that University they attended. It’s exhausting
I think that we all agree that Europeans especially western Europeans are entitled douches and a pain in the arse to work with.

Conquering the rest of the Donbas by March. That’s a tall order even if the Russians keep up their rate of advance that they have had over the last two weeks.

Preach on brotha. I work with Europeans often. It's not easy
Over 40 years the Dutch and Norwegians have been great to work with. Germans definitely pros but rather stiff. Brits can be real pricks. Italians and Spanish, watch your billfold, figuratively speaking.

Back to the drone war...
Ukrainian drone flys over picks up a dead Russian's radio and flies back home. Purportedly they used it for 9 days to listen to the Russians.
Twitter video of theft by drone
Alleged new Russian T-90M Proryv-3 with Nakidka thermal camouflage burning after being hit by an AT-4.

State Duma member going on and on about the evil, satanic, fascist US and how it is the 4th Reich. Russia is of course the shining light on the hill and the last gasp for good and Christian Orthodoxy in the world.

The capture of Soledar marks the first victory for Russia since Lysychansk was captured in early July 2022. However, since then, operationally, Russian posture has been predominantly defensive across Ukraine.
The fall of Soledar changes nothing. Using Wagner, Russia used manpower and resources to capture the city. There are already unconfirmed reports claiming that the scale of losses on the Wagner side is so significant that the company is no longer a viable military formation
But with 200,000 Russian soldiers yet to be deployed, spring months will be challenging for Kyiv, especially if a new wave of mobilisation is announced.
If Ukraine is to be sustained long-term, Abrams should also be included in future support packages, as only the US guarantees a stable and sufficient number of tanks to Ukraine.
There is increasing evidence of a rotation of Russian forces in Belarus. Some trains carried personnel to Podgornoye, placing them on a route to the Luhansk Oblast.
Undoubtedly, Belarus's most critical training event started on Wednesday, when the 72nd Joint Training Center began its readiness check. The unit serves as the main mobilisation base of the Belarusian Armed Forces.
My (pro)Russian fans like this tweet a lot. But they lack perspective - Moscow suffered two operations defeats in the last five months, decreased territorial control by 50% from its peak in March '22 and fought for Soledar for six months.

INTELLIGENCE UPDATE
UPDATE ON UKRAINE 17 January 2023
On 14 January 2023, Russia resumed long-range missile strikes against Ukrainian infrastructure, the first in approximately 15 days, launching tens of missiles. As with the previous eight waves of strikes since 11 October 2022, Russia primarily targeted the Ukrainian electricity grid.
An AS-4 KITCHEN large anti-ship missile, launched from a Tu-22M3 BACKFIRE medium bomber, highly likely struck a block of flats in Dnipro city which resulted in the death of at least 40 people. Russia falsely implied a Ukrainian air defence missile was responsible. KITCHEN is notoriously inaccurate when used against ground targets as its radar guidance system is poor at differentiating targets in urban areas. Similar weapons have been responsible for other incidents of civilian mass-casualties, including the Kremenchuk shopping centre strike of 27 June 2022.
While some missiles such as KITCHEN are unsuitable for precision strike, evidence from the Ukraine war suggests that dysfunction of Russia's long-range strike capability is more profound. It highly likely struggles to dynamically identify targets, and to access rapid and accurate battle damage assessment.

Germany names new defense minister amid pressure to provide Leopard tanks to Ukraine
by The Kyiv Independent news desk
January 17, 2023 1:33 pm
Germany has named as new defense minister Boris Pistorius, an interior minister from the state of Lower Saxony and member of the Social Democratic Party of the German chancellor, Olaf Scholz, German media reported on Jan. 17.
Pistorius will replace Christine Lambrecht, who resigned on Monday, after her tenure was dogged by criticism of how she handled military aid to Ukraine as well as the project to improve the German military.
The replacement comes at a sensitive time. Germany is under growing pressure to provide Ukraine with modern Leopard-2 main battle tanks or allow other countries, such as Poland, to provide them instead.

Which Western MBTs besides the US Abrams are still in production?
As I think others pointed out, if NATO members provide their Leopards to Ukraine, is the US the only source available to replace them?

i think only abrams, leopards(only like 25 a year) and i think South Koreas tank.
if this war has shown anything, when a new president gets in & hopefully before then, we need to take a long hard look at our production capabilities to reproduce our equipment in case we do get into a prolonged war. we will need to have the ability to flip that switch quickly
also will need to replenish stocks(hopefully using the seaized russian assets) but need to be at levels much higher than before for things like himars and others that have proven themselfs there in ukraine
i do find it hilarious that russia finally starts getting t-90 to the battlefield.....we get video confirmation and within a few days...we start getting confirmation they have been destroyed using a fricking $1,500 AT-4 developed 40 years ago
so much for the t-90 being a game changer and being able to withstand direct hits :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :rotflmao:
this is why i think if we ever(god forbid) got into a direct shooting war with russia or china....we would destroy them promptly. all of their tech is good in theory, but they have no QC and can never produce equipment that lives up even close to the hype.
i am honestly having serious doubts that they have the tech and maintenance and targetting ability to actually shoot an icbm and hit within 100 miles of a target. they certainly have no ability to produce new missles imo

Obtuse1, I'm really not very confident in this Igor Sushko guy.
He also posted this last night:
I mean, the idea that Russia might mount an offensive from Belarus into Western Ukraine to cut supply lines from Poland? That's certainly possible, and something that we've discussed and others have discussed.
But "Russia has readied 700,000 soldiers"? C'mon, man. That's as crazy as some of the fantasies of the Russian fanboys.
He also posted this last night:
quote:
#Gerasimov's Hail Mary Attack on #Lviv: The following is reported by Volya Media, allegedly from sources inside the General Staff of #Russia.
1) Russia has readied 700,000 soldiers, some already in West Belarus, & 200,000 waiting in reserves.
2) Attack may start in weeks.
3) If Russia is able to take Lviv, then #Ukraine will be cut off from Western military supplies through #Poland, resulting in a catastrophic blow.
4) Gerasimov was the mastermind behind the original Feb 24 offensive, including the specific plan to take #Hostomel & #Kyiv quickly.
5) Russian command has been conserving & hoarding artillery shells for this large-scale offensive for months. The observed shell 'deficit' on the front was artificial.
6) Typical Russian strategy will be employed - level cities ahead with mass shelling, then move forward.

The Dnipro strike happened on her 19th birthday. Along with lots of other injuries, she's already lost an eye, but doctors are trying to save the other one.
I think it's important to not look away, but rather to focus on what is actually happening.

This is quite right:
I've seen so much foolish talk about how giving Ukraine weapons could cause Putin to lash out with nukes, but the real nuclear risk would be if Russia were to win the war.
Ukraine had nuclear weapons at the time of its independence. Does anyone think that this war would be happening right now if it still had them, instead of trusting Russia and the West for its security?
South Korea, Japan, and Saudi Arabia could all soon become nuclear powers if they don't feel secure. That would make the world a much more dangerous place.
Incidentally, this is also why Xi has told Putin to cool it with the nuclear threats.
quote:
If fear is the only thing some Western leaders understand, they should consider this. For other nations, the lesson of a Ukraine that is not allowed to win this war is very simple: get yourself nuclear weapons. Finns, Poles, Kazakhs, Ukrainians for that matter, and many others will conclude that conventional strength alone is not enough. That South Korea’s leadership has begun talking about the need to reintroduce nuclear weapons to the peninsula is not coincidental.
In a world where a large predatory state is stalled but not beaten decisively, the only resort for its smaller neighbors is to acquire weapons of cataclysmic power. Their leaders would be irresponsible if they did not consider that option. And the leaders of the major Western states are not just irresponsible but willfully negligent if they fail to take the measures—all well within their power—to avoid the world that this failure would bequeath to succeeding generations.
